»Placekicker Dave Allison
Georgia is the right place but he got here at the wrong time

He finally got to the right

timing was a little off. his

he saw Rex Robinson take
major strides toward becoming

You see, Allison is a
placekicker himself, and a

that much behind Robinson,”
said Bulldog kicking coach Bill
Hartman while holding his
thumb and forefinger less than
an inch apart. Robinson was
selected to the AU-SEC team
by United Press International
in 1978 and was a 1979
pre-season All-American pick
by Playboy magazine
Hartman continued that
“whereas Rex will make 33x35
(field goal attempts). Allison
will hit 32x35.’*
Robinson takes the com
parison a step further. “I think
we re equal, when it comes to
a day to day thing. All he
needs is a little game
experience.”

Allison said he had "really
always wanted to play for
Georgia." His parents always
came to Bulldog games and he
remembered seeing eventual

Bulldog booter, Kim Braswell,

Allison's alma mater.

But following graduation
there was the lure of a
four-year scholarship offer
from the University of
Dubuque so it was of to Iowa
for Allison. It took him two
years to realize that, at any
cost, Georgia was where he
needed to be. So Allison
transferred to his first love
following the 1976 season
The year of Allison's in
eligibility per the NCAA
transfer rule also happened to
be Robinson's successful fresh
man debut. All the affable 5-9.
175-pounder could do was sit
back and watch as Robinson
established himself as the
Georgia kicker
"I just got here at the wrong
time," Allison said. "I sat out
when he was a freshman and
then he had the. great
•ophomore season.”
According to Robinson,
Allison's presence is one
reason he had such a fine
sophomore year. "Dave had
sat out my freshman year and
then he had a real good spring
and I didn’t do so well.”
Robinson said he had to work
harder to be assured of
keeping his job in the fall.
“Because of the fact he
applied pressure, it helped
me.” Robinson said. ‘‘Dave
was one of the main reasons I
had a good year last year.”
Now, after a successful field
goal by Robinson or a kickoff
that cannot be returned,
Allison is the first to greet the
way he can
"When you’ve got somebody
behind you who's almost as
good, it pushes you a little

harder, Allison said. “Rex
told me last year it made him
a better kicker. He makes me
a better kicker, too.”
Allison, who will graduate in
the summer with a degree in
social work, can also look to
that shot at the professional
ranks
"I’m going to really work as
hard as I can and try to
improve over the winter,”
Allison said, pointing out the
tremendous difference between
kicking off the ground, which
is required in the pros, as
opposed to the tee that is
allowed in college "If every
thing works out I think I can
make it.”
"He’ll get a free-agent shot
and with some luck he’ll make
better than some of them up
there now."
In the meantime. Allison
toils behind Robinson, who it
likely to go down in history as
Georgia’s best "When you’re
behind somebody as good as
him it doesn’t bother you as
much," Allison said
But no one could blame
Allison if he’s beginning to get
a little anxious about the
eventual day when he will get
the opportunity to put his own
talents to the ultimate test

"We're on a team; you have
to pull together. I'm not going
to pull against somebody."
Allison said
A quirk involved is that had
Allison chosen to walk on to
the Georgia football camp out
of high school, it is fair to
assume Robinson would never
have gotten his shot.
“If he had walked on out of
high school he might be our
kicker now,'* Hartman said,
adding, "He could kick for any
other school in our confer
