ARS flaunts its mediocrity
Thf Red and Black. Friday, November 2. 1879

By BOBBY BYRD
Entertainment editor
It's one thing for a s\iow to be
average—not every artist it
truly brilliant on every night.
But for a band to flaunt its
mediocrity is another matter
entirely. The Atlanta Rhythm
Section Wednesday night ran
through a brief, lackluster reci
tal of their recent works that
recalled the old joke at the
beginning of Annie Hail: about
the restaurant where the food it
bad—and such small portions,
too.
For whatever reasons. ARS
turned in a set that ignored their
earlier work, contained little
deviation from the studio ver
sions and clocked in at a
stunning 69 minutes. Mean
while, Delbert McClinton
opened the evening by playing
his heart out. showing the
power and emotion so lacking in
the headliners.
McClinton is an average-
locking sort from Texas who's
been kicking around clubs and
joints in the Southwest for about
400 years. He sings with the
conviction of his music, vintage
roadhouse blues where the
night, purveyor of love, heart
ache. glory and trouble, is all
that matters.
The opening set was built of
both lessor known McClinton
songs and old classics—a bluesy
“I Don’t Want To Hear It
Anymore" one minute. Willie
Nelson's "Night Life" and
Chuck Berry’s "Talking Bout
You" the next. Throughout.
McClinton and his six-piece
band played the hell out of them
all, taking chances and making
them work. And. importantly on
this night, they did 13 songs.
Not extraordinary, except when
the headliners only do 12.
Bu; before we get too far into
this, a word about the produc
tion itself. This thing wasn't the
Union's fault. Contemporary
Concerts booked a popular
band, they saved the Coliseum’s
front rows for the ticket buying
public and the show ran like

Ronnie Hammond leads ARS through a brief, unimaginative performance
clockwork.
The reserved scats down front
are part of a new policy, one
that’s been needed for some
time. Rows 1-3 and 6-8 are held
for the people who wait outside,
with only rows 4 and 5 for
division guests. This eliminates
the problem of Union folks
saving the first 42 rows, and
insures that the band plays to
people who are enthusiastic,
which Wednesday’s crowd was.
In other words, everything
ran well. ARS just didn’t giv« a
damn, and there’s nobody to
blame but them.
The problem with ARS is that
they are either incapable of even
the slightest embellishments of
their songs, or they just don’t
want to bother. Throughout the
night, each selection was a
carbon copy of their record
ings—no added riffs, no guitar
improvisations, no tricky vocal
inflections. They reproduce
their stuff so accurately that if
the whole thing had been on
tape, no one could have known.
Even the evening’s "jam.”
"Another Man’s Woman." was
done the way they do it night
after night after night.
The song selection was equal
ly frustrating. Their first five
albums, regarded by many
longtime fans as far superior to
either Champagne lam or Un
derdog, were represented by ;i
Onstage
grand total of ©fie song, the
aforementioned ’Another
Man’s Woman." from Red
Tape. T he list of songs not
performed is stunning: ignored
were, among others. "Angel."
"Who You Gonna Run To."
"Back Up Against The Wall."
"Police Police." "Dog Days."
"All Night Rain." "San Antonio
Rose—Jukin." "Hitchhikers
Hero." ’’S») Into You." "Dora
villc”—the list goes on.
Instead, we were treated to
such recent hits as "Do It Or
Die." "Large Time" and
"Spooky." done in textbook
(read: unexciting) fashion. Even
the oddities, the covers ot
"Rocky Raccoon." "Long Tall
Sally" and 40 seconds of "Miss
You" (done as part of "Ir.tagin
ary Lover") have now become
standard operating procedure.
And to make ntatters worse.

Brooks to lecture Tuesday
Internationally recognized agricultural economist D.W.
Brooks will speak at the University Tuesday as part of a
special annual lecture series initiated in his honor three
years ago by the College of Agriculture.
Brooks, a member of the Presidential Commission on
World Hunger, and chairman of the board emeritus of Gold
Kisi. an agricultural cooperative in Atlanta, will discuss the
"Politics and Economics of Agriculture" at 4 p.m. in the law
school auditorium.
An alumnus of the University’s College of Agriculture.'
Brooks served as an agricultural consultant to presidents
Truman. Eisenhower. Kennedy. Johns*.n and Ford.
Brooks is a strong advocate of research and has devoted
his career to the idea that life can be improved through
agriculture. In a lecture given at the University last winter,
he said. "If it’s (research) at its best... it will raise the whole
economic well-being of mankind."
Tuesday's lecture will be preceded by a reception at 3:30
p.m. outside the law school auditorium and admission will
be free. Faculty members, students and the general public
arc invited. A

lead singer Ronnie Hammond,
once the victim of bad reviews
for his lack of stage presence,
has decided to do something
about ii. He now raps with the
crowd between songs, thrusts
his crotch and picks up the mike
stand. He has become not so
much dull, as irritating.
However, it should be said
that the crowd of 5000 enjoyed
the proceedings immensely, un
til they realized that suddenly, it
was time to leave. Then,
justifiably, the booing began.
ARS’ show, in the end. fails
because of the overwhelming
calculation involved. You don’t
change your songs at all;
everybody can follow right
along. You don’t play any old
stuff, nobody feels stupid be
cause they don’t know the song.
And nou play 69 minutes (they
were contracted to play 75); you
can make it home in time for the
news.
In so doing. ARS showed
themselves to be a band with
absolutely no concept of obliga
tion to their audience. When,
during "Georgia Rhythm."
Hammond sang "Let’s give it
everything we got just one more
time." it was ludicrous. Simply
ludicrous.
