t his ranks with the
worst’ says Dooley
By WAKKKN H \K\
Assistant sports editor
Virginia's Cavaliers came to Athens without a winning record
>how for their past ten seasons During that span the Cavs
l;av compiled a 29-79-1 mark Virginia was improved and
•veryone knew it, but 31-0 improved? That was not expected and
those involved on the losing end were obviously stunned and
.roped for explanations.
"When we got the ball inside the 20. somehow we would just
make mistakes." said Georgia Bulldog tailback Matt Simon,
‘.umbered among those mistakes were four passes to Virginia
personnel and two lost fumbles by the Dogs
Quarterback Buck Belue. on the losing team for the first time
since winning the first-string job. also cited the mistakes by
Georgia, but he added another twist "There were a lot of
mistakes but that may not have hurt u* as much as not being
r* dy to play.”
Backup quarterback Jeff Pyburn sensed the team might not be
mentally prepared to play a quality footbal game I told my
wife this morning I was worried aboul n." Pyburn said following
;he defeat. "I didn't think we were ready to play
Pyburn and Belue each brought up another point that may be
•in accurate evaluation of Saturday's ineptness We’re really not
1 f..it great a football team If we don't play our best were not
t .'HR to beat people,” Pyburn lamented
Buck Belue echoed those sentiments "We re not that good a
team that we can come out and win without playing
f emotionally.”
The Bulldogs are now 0-4 against nou-conferenc* opponents and
sterling 4-0 versus SEC foes. "We've been kind of like Dr
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” was how Belue described the difference in
• the quality of play.
Maybe there has been a subconscious tendency on the part of
individual players to "get fired up" only lor the conference
matchups 'and' slack off a hit otherwise (’ornerhack Scott
• Wo met. however, is hesitant to agree with that theory
"The SEC games are more important but 1 know I want to win
every one of them. Losing—I can’t put up with that, concluded a
Cross country team sixth in SEC meet
dejected Woerner
Head coach Vince Dooley made an interesting comment about
thr emotional status and mental preparedness of his team for
Saturday s game It's all relative to the other team It’s relative
to how ready you are to play compared to the other team ”
Based on that assessment it might not have mattered how
n id\ Georgia was or wasn't to play football Saturday The
< avaliers came to Athens with a purpose in mind and possibly no
amount ol preparation would have denied their effort.
Regardless. when Dooley was asked to compare the 31-0 loss
with othOT defeats his teams have suffered, the coach did not
have to ponder his response.
"This ranks with the worst."

Falcons ’ flight makes upward swing
ATLANTA (UPI)—Leeman Bennett's sermons on ball control
have made converts of the Atlanta Falcons
But although the Falcons held the ball for 37 of the firs* 49
iu Sunday they still trailed Tamp < : ■ iptiug
m two fourth period touchdowns and edging the Buccaneers.
17 14. for only their second victory in their last eight games
The Falcons, who visit the New York Giants next Sunday, paid
dearly lor their victory Bookie running back Lynn Gain, who
* moved into a starting role the past few week* and gained 65
ards Sunday, tore a ligament in his right knee early iu the
fourth period and apparently is lost tor the
Although the Falcons maintained ball control with heir
’ running game. Steve Bartkowski wound up with only net
passing yards.
I wasn’t satisfied with my play, but this happened to be our
day said Bartkowski. "I didn’t believe we could - mtrol the ball
,i much as we did. but we needed the win to get our confidence
and momentum back.”
Jim Mitchell, who caught three passes Sunday, hadn’t been a
factor iu Atlanta’s passing attack this season. The 11-year
veteran caught only four passes in the Falcons’ first nine games.
“It's not that we have been deliberately neglecting Mitchell
this season.” said Bennett. “It’s either he hasn’t been in that
much or wo re depending on him more to block. This came about
mainly because of our early success with our wide receivers
When you are doing well with some phase of your offense, you’ve
got to ride that horse."
Mitchell noted that the touchdown pass he caught Sunday "was
the same type of pass I dropped in the Seattle game, a 31-28 loss
last Monday. But I try not to worry about missed passes I was
down some because I hadn’t been contributing more on offense,
but I feel I’ll be more in the game plan next week against the
Giants after the way things went today.”
