Individual offenses will not he
reviewed by the judiciary, but
affairs concerning groups or
entire houses will, said Mike
Valentine, president of the
Interfraternity Council.
The judiciary will act in cases
concerning stolen or abused
property, or in any conflict
between sororities and fraterni
ties. Kimbrell said.
The Panhellenic Council pre
sently has a judicial branch
which sets rush procedures.
Previously, rush procedures
were determined by the coun
cil’s executive board.
‘‘We decided the judiciary
would be more impartial, more
inclined to sec things clearly
than the board." Kimbrell said.
Valentine sees the Greek
judiciary system as a regulating 9
force.

houses. The old rivalries have

GOOLSBY
From p. I
"This is not a significant
event.” said Barry Wood.
University public relations
director Goolsby is "simply
trying to get attention with a
fairly routine maneuver,”
Wood said.
"1 don't think anyone else
has ever done it (resign from
the graduate faculty),” Gools
by said But Wood said moves
like this one have happened
probably dozens of times ."
The College of Education will
simply elect a replacement.
Wood said.
Goolsby called his resigna
tion a symbolic support for
fired graduate school Dean
Hardy Edwards, who was
reassigned by Davison in early
Octobei.
"Contrary to news media
reports that the lowest salary
increase was five percent. I
received a 2.5 percent increase
for fiscal year '80." Goolsby
said in his letter to Davison,
citing another reason for the
move.
"I suppose he isn’t the only
one (to receive a 2.5 percent
increase),’ Wood said. The
minimum wage increase set by
the Board of Regents was 2.5
percent, a cost of living raise,

Correction
In a story in the Nov. 20 Red
and Black concerning two ar
rests made in connection with a
takeover of WUOG. the campus
radio station. Peter Lamb was
incorrectly identified as Paul
Lamb. The Red and Black
regrets any confusion caused by
the error.
From p. 1
And the little touches: the solid brass ticket
chopper imported from France, the original
balcony seats adorned with intricate metal
work, the brass box office (also made in
France) and the gilted and tiled fountains, once
filled with goldfish
Many of the furnishings are the original
purchases of Mrs. William Fox. wife of the
movie monarch Legend has it Mrs. Fox
roamed the Middle East for furnishings and
accessories for the lobby and lounges of the
theater as it was being built in the late 1920s.
The construction, which took several years
and around $4 million to complete, is a
combination of Arabic, Islamic and Egyptian
architecture with towers, minarets, arches and
domes added for effect. Swedes from Ohio were
brought in to plaster the walls. With an
emphasis on perfection, the Swedes used
cornflakes in their plaster mixture to get "just
the right texture " Painters were said to have
used milk in the ceiling's blue pigment to get
"just the right color.”
.The crowning touch was. and still is. the
approximately $35,000 worth of gold that was
leafed into the walls of the Fox palace
The fabulous Fox opened its doors Christmas
Day 1929 with a Steamboat Willie" cartoon, a
organ concert with musical assistance by the
Fox Grand Orchestra, the Fox Movietone News
and a brief stage show The feature was Beach
Nights, starring Helen Chandler, Stepin Fetchit
and George O’Brien
Opening just as depression was beginning to
strike the country, the Fox suffered financially
and was closed due to delinquent taxes. A
group called Mosque. Inc. reopened the theater
in 1935, and still owns the Fox.
Groups pushing for preservation of the Fox
were a bit dubious when its management first
turned over the mammoth theater to the
younger generation for rock concerts in the
mid 70s. but the idea has proven to be a
rewarding one for both groups
A 25 cent surcharge on each ticket to Fox
events keeps the preservation group adequately
funded to move ahead with their plans while
concert goers are satisfied with the perfect
acoustics and the memories—memories of
weekend family jaunts to see Walt Disney
movies and consuming vast quantities of
popcorn and Milk Duds while father snored in
the next seat.
Substances consumed by the aged Bambi
crowd may be somewhat different now. but
even venturing forth into the lounge (i.e.:
restroom) at the Fox is still an adventure.
Long, arched hallways, adorned with Mrs.
Fox's hand-chosen urns and lamps, lead to the
black and white tiled havens No trip down the
red carpeted stairs is complete without a quick
rest on one of the numerous chaise lounges or a
quick glimpse in a gold filigree-framed mirror.
The plushness, no matter how old you are. is
still there, and still very, very impressive,
almost awesome.
Bie words describe the Fox: mammoth,
fabulous, opulent, posh, resplendent, spectacu
lar. The dream of a bygone era stands tall
against the 300 seat plastic and concrete
suburban mini-theaters malls whose only frill
is. perhaps, a rocking chair seat.
An escape route to a world of fantasy, both
on stage and off, the mighty. Fabulous Fox
remains.
