Jeff Pybum goes out a true champion
Jeff Pyburn is a true champion
The senior quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs has fallen
from the heights of the mountain to the deepest part of the
valley, only to slowly climb back to the top of the mountain
again
The 1979 season has not been kind to Pyburn He has felt the
lash of the media, he has heard boos from his own fans, and
he was forced to play behind another quarterback for the first
time in three years
As Georgia's team leader. Pyburn took much of the blame
for the Bulldogs' disasterous 0-3 start, and was finally benched
in favor of sophomore quarterback Buck Beluc Belue led the
team to five straight Southeastern Conference victories, and
Pyburn didn’t get a chance to prove himself until the younger
quarterback went down with a fractured ankle in Georgia's
last SEC game of the season
The season was hard for the 6T\ 205-lb. Athens native, but
the spiritually minded Pybum looks at the rocky year as a
learning experience
'T don't think this season did anything but make me
stronger.'' Pyburn said “I just realized how fleeting a thing
football is and worldly success is It's just really not all that
important *
it puts things in perspective when you're put in a situation
like that, because you realize that the things that are really
important in life can't be taken away from you Mv faith in
God can't be taken away from me. but football can be taken
away "
As a very religious individual. Pyburn preaches what he
practices During the off season, he is extensively involved in
speaking to youth groups, banquets, and has preached several
times at Churches of God across the state Pybum and his
wife, the former Deborah Mosely. Miss Georgia 1978. are
currently involved in five Bible study groups during the week,
one of which is held in their home. According to Pyburn. God
has used this season to strengthen the quarterback's faith
“I don’t belive that before time began God planned out our
lives." Pyburn stated. "I don’t think God sent any jinx on me
this year—1 don't believe that I believe that what did happen
though. God used for the betterment of my person, to make
me a stronger man.”
"I don't believe that God said. Jeff, I see you down there
and you’ve had too much success in your life, so I'm going to
zap you this year’"
The hardest thing for Pyburn to face this year was the
hostility of the fans But the senior signal-caller faced that
aspect of the season also.
“One thing I had to do this year when the fans got riled up
was to iust consider the source. ' he said. “Most df those
people don’t know a whole lot about football, and they’d get
out there and get real emotional at the games and for some
mm or another they didn't like me. but it was something I
just had to learn to live with It wasn't any fun. It’s certainly
a lot easier to play when the folks are on your side That was
lough to take initially but eventually I think I learned to take
it
But Jeff Pybum came back from the bench to put himself in
better light with the fans When P>burn was all they had to
turn to in the Auburn and Georgia Tech games, not a single
Georgia fan booed the senior quarterback
They didn’t have to Pybum played great games at the end
of the season, and he leaves Georgia football as a true
champion
“I think those last two games of the season proved some
things to a lot of people that maybe had some doubts about
me," Pyburn said “Of course, people forget things easily, and
I don't know if my performance in those last two games will
sway their minds one way or another But I don’t have to
worry about that, because I'm dt peace with myself. I went
out there and played as well as I could play, and really the
only people I can try to please is my God and myself.’’
Pyburn now goes on to finish his senior year, and will play
one last season of Georgia baseball After he graduates, he
may get a chance to play professional football or baseball,
and he is planning on a career in the ministry
And when he does begin his preaching. Jeff Pybum will
have quite a sermon to tell of his rocky 1979 season with the
Georgia Bulldogs
