MICROBES REDUCE SULFUR
Scientist’s research could help oil production
By PAUL W. PENDERGRASS
Dr. William Finnertv. head of
the University Microbiology de
partment. is conducting re
search on an energy producing
process that he hopes eventually
"would possibly help" relieve
the nation's dependence on
sometimes unreliable energy
sources.
His research involves a fuel
that is economically feasible,
practical and. best of all.
conforming to our current stan
dards of energy consumption.
One might imagine that he is
experimenting with solar, nu
clear. or hydrothermal energy,
but this "miracle fuel" which
Finnertv is studying is common
petroleum.
Finerty has been working for
15 years on refining "sour
crude" petroleum. This type of
petroleum, which has a high
si.fur content, is more abun
dant than low sulfur, or "sweet
crude." petroleum.
Finnertv has discovered that a
certain type of bacteria can
remove up to 98 to 100 percent
of the sulfur-containing com
pounds in "sour crude." mak
ing it more desirable for burn
ing. The bacteria can also
increase oil well activity.
"A certain percentaggc of oil
that is currently usable is still in
the ground." Finncrty said.
These microbes can stimulate
inactive wells and possibly
revive oil production.

Geologists have used this
technique and report 30 to 40
percent stimulation in wells that
apparently were depleted of oil.
The bacteria, which attack only
unusable compounds and leave
the oil otherwise unchanged,
can refine oil in 48 hours, and
the use of these bacteria is
cheaper than chemical process
ing or synthetic fuel alterna
tives.
Finnety said his process was
"still in the laboratory phase."
and has not yet "reached the
scaled-up technology stage."
The public sometimes expects
technological wonders from sci
entists. Finncrty said -
"Scientists art forced into a
corner because people expect
overnight results."
His research is an emphasis
on acquisition of new basic
information which might have
potential application to current
energy problems." Finnerty
said his process "requires fur
ther basic research" before it
can he used in oil refinement,
adding lhai "there is quite a
difference between processing
50 milliliters m the laboratory"
and large quantities in an oil
refiner\.
Finncrty does not foresee any
drastk discoveries that imme
diately would solve the oil crisis,
saving "progress in the area of
petroleum production will be

Shcllcdy and Dayan are still

"We’re still seeking contri

"The difficulty that (ousted

Williams said he and his
community group have specific

According to Williams, the

quite some time. "Wc had been

several months, and we finally
decided to disspell them as
rumors or verify them as fact."
Williams said.

The requested zoning change
would alter a large ponion of the
Macon Highway-Timothy Road
area from Kb. requiring a
property lot of at least 6000
square feet, to R20. requiring a
lot of at least 20.000 square feet.
Williams said the community is
seeking the change to make sure
"that the undeveloped land is

The planning commission al

change. Before the change is
enacted, a change which could
effectively block construction of

county commission may order a

account the influx of traffic into
the area when the new strip of
