It’s remarkable, to say the
least, if also not a Wf ironic, that
the Beatles, who hung up things
in 1970. are responsible i**r

So it’s no surprise that The

“Lady Madonna. 1 ” Whoever
put Rarities together had to
have a sense of humor—as the
liner notes gleefully point out.
' I Want To Hold Your Hand”
sold over five million copies,
making the flip side the biggest
selling rarity in history.
The album manages to pro
vide a pretty good sweep of the
group's history in its 17 selec
tions. there are Mersey-beat
tunes, all out rock 'n roll
numbers a couple of things
done in their last year together
and (unfortunately) the stan
dard Harrison excursion into the
world id Eastern musical nood-
ling.
Rarities neatly showcases the
Beatles’ strengths (John’s vo
cals and George's incredible
guitar work for example), ex
poses a couple of weaknesses
(like George's often less than
stellar songwriting abilities and
John 's sense of humor •some
times getting out of control), but
overall proves itself to be
another Beatles album (not too
shabby. in cither words).

"Yes It Is” ill side of "Ticket
To Rule”). "I'll Get You"
(B-side of "She Loves You")
and "Thank You Girl” (B-side
of "Front Me To You") are all
gtHtd examples of the group's
early Mersey-beat sound, the
latter two even sporting John's
harmonica. While not ranking
among their most memorable
work, none of these songs is
worse than pleasing, and all
show that the boys were un
afraid tp experiment with vocals
and instrumentals from an early
stage on.
Sounds
The album’s real revelation is
"This Bov.' Originality, this
appeared with "I Want To Hold
Your Hand." which make it
easy to understand how it sort of
got shunted aside That’s too
bad. because it's a superb song,
featuring some of the best
harmonica the Beatles ever put
on vinyl.
Closing out the first side are
German versions of ”1 Want To
Hold Your Hand” and "She
Loves You." There’s not deny
ing that they sound kinda
funny—no wonder Germany
isn't exactly a hotbed for rock
groups. If you get bored some
time. try slipping these two little
ditties in while gathered with
some of your stoned and-or
inebriated friends and see what
sort of reactions you can stir.
Side two sounds even better

George's song is on the First

It's devoted almost complcte-

anything else shows how great a

To George’s credit, side two

Ringo’s token vocal appearance

without), the fun John seems to
he having in "Bad Boy," and
Paul’s Little Richardish. almost
out-of-control singing in "I’m

with their great rendition of
"Long Fall Sally" to end on an
appropriate note.
Obviously, if you're a Beatle
lover. The Beatles' Rarities is
a necessity. If you're not. you
are denying yourself a good
lime needlessly. Given that the
bulk of (his record is from the
early '60s (when Donna Summer
was knee-high to a platform
heel), perhaps it's amazing that
the music sounds as fresh as it
does, but if (here's a better way
to welcome the HOs musically. I
can’t think of it.
‘Yanks’ a soap opera, a sure-fire tear jerker
By KIM UNDERWOOD
Staff writer
While watching Yanks, it is
easy to forget that you are not
watching one of those 1940s
Films about wartime romance.
But in this Film the Americans
are the foreigners and the native
Englishmen do not appreciate
these unwelcome visitors. Part
of it may have to do with the fact
that little boys and English
women cannot resist the temp
tation to he around these
curious yanks.
As a result. Richard Gere and
Lisa Eichhom pair up. followed
by Vanessa Redgrave and Wil
liam Devane.
But there are complications;
Eichhorn has a Fiance and
Redgrave and Devanc are mar
ried to different people. Sonic
how they overcome these ob
stacles but it docsn i look like
they will live happily ever after
because one day the men will
have to leave.
Cinema
One thing is certain, without
its Fine acting performances
Yanks would be nothing. In her
Film debut. Eichhorn proves that
she is a capable and subtle
actress. Gere gives a per
formance that is natural; it is
almost as though he isn’t acting.
Redgrave deserves a stronger
character; however, she does
extremely well. Devane is sub
dued and stavs well into the
background.
But there are too many
"straight" characters and not
enough spicy ones.
Rachel Roberts, as Eichhorn’s
mother, makes up for what all
the other characters lack in
feistiness. The kids in the
film—Martin Smith. Philip
Whileman and Simon Harri
son—prove that children should
be seen and heard. .
The main problem in Yanks is
that it lacks unity. The two main
romances are not tied together
in any way although we know
that Eichhorn and Redgrave’s
characters know each other. The
scenes, jumping from one cou
ple to another, interrupt the
flow that should be a vital part
of the Film.
In reality. Yanks is a soap
opera on a grand scale—a
sure-Fire tear jerker. But there is
nothing wrong with this because
the Film explores the love
relationships honestly and open
ly. and while a few scenes fall
flat, most are tremendously
entertaining and thought pro
voking.
