i.t. Gov. Zell Miller spoke at a fundraiser in Athens
Miller repeats support of drinking bill
By TIM BONNE!
Assitant city editor
U. Gov. Zell Miller reiterated
his support for legislation that
will raise the legal drinking age
in the state from 18 to 21 and for
a proposed bill allowing the
legal distribution of marijuana
to cancer patients. He was on a
campaign swing through Athens
Jan. 5.
Miller was at an open house
fundraiser sponsored by his
Clarke County si/pporters. He is
opposing U.S. Senator Herman
Talmadge (D-Ga.) and a host of
other candidates for Talmadge's
Senate seat in 1960
Miller has long relied on
student support in all his
campaigns, noting that his first
race in ’64 was run by three
college students, a trend that
continues today. His campaign
is being coordinated by a law
student, and his staff is manned
primarily by student volunteers.
However. Miller’s support for
the legislation raising the drink-
ing age may cost him some of
this support. “1 long ago
stopped worrving about how
anyone reacts to my positions.
Miller said. ‘‘I can't work that
way.'* He said no one ever
agrees with a politician's stands
100 percent of the time. and.
as such, the only thing to do is
support the man you agree with
most of the time.
Miller's campaign is taking a
twofold thrust, concentrating
first on “issue orientation" and
second, “what a United States
Senator from Georgia ought to
be." according to Jim Comer-
field. a member of the Miller
campaign entourage.
The issue orientation facet
includes support for indexing
income taxes to the inflation
rate and support for U.S.
Senator Edmund Muskie's (D-
Maine) Sunset Laws. The laws
will allow Congress to cut
funding to federal agencies that
are functioning improperly. In
the past. Talmadge has been
against indexing while favoring
the Sunset Laws.
The image aspect of the
campaign runs on “the tradition
of integrity and independence
exhibited by other Georgia
senators like Richard Russell.
Walter George and Sam Nunn.’’
Comerficld said. "A Georgia
serator should be open, access
ible. accountable; Talmadge has
been too wrapped up in his own
problems.''
Miller said he does not feel
the campaign will interfere with
his duties as lieutenant gov
ernor and presiding officer of
the senate since the campaign
will not reach full-swing unitl
the spring, after the general
assembly session ends. Until
that time, his campaign will
remain in an organizational
stage, with Miller's personal
appearances restricted to week
end excursions similar to the i f
CPR course here next week
from Atlanta.
said.
“I'm not running against
anyone else; I’m running
against Talmadge. and the more
people in the race, the more
votes it will take from him
Right now. I'm looking to get in
the runoff.’*
Miller composed the Senate
race to the '74 governor's race,
where George Busbee defeated
Lester Maddox in the democra
tic runoff after beating out Bert
Lance and David Gambrell to
reach the runoff. It's Miller's
opinion that whoever gets in the
runoff with Talmadge will pick
up the support from the defeat
ed candidates, just like Busbee
did. and win the race. Miller
does not foresee Talmadge
getting much more support than
the 38 percent popularity the
senator now enjoys.
The lieutenant governor add
ed that 61 tax recommendations
and a salary increase for Uni
versity personnel of at least 12
percent are among other things
the lawmakers will review when
the general assembly convenes
later this month.
The lieutenant governor said
the entrance of Judge Norman
Underwood into the race will
help rather than hinder Miller’s
chances. “The more people in
the race the better.'* Miller

"WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE?"
Psalms 2:1 and Acta 425
Often, or generally speaking, when you begin to talk about
the Purttena there be many that tear their shirt, or eklrT and
holler and squall "witch-craft, witch-hunterAnd there Is a
cause for this. "Come now. end let us reason together.”
Probably It was sixty years ago that the writer heard a
"theological professor" say In his sermon that we had
learned today there wee no such thing ee a "Witch." It It my
understanding that even today witches and witch-doctors
are real folks and sxtrl tremendous Influence and power In
certain parts ol the world. And have read and heard of*try
Godly Missionaries telling of the depressing effect
experienced eveh by them selves In lands tffbrttavs long been
without or never Influenced by genuine Christianity.
It could be that the reason wa know or experience so little
of such things Is due to the good |ob the Puritans did In
"witch-hunting," at which we mock today. However, ail this
must ba wrong and out-moded, for surely such a men as this
“learned professor" In such a prominent position would not
have made such a statement In such a prominent piece
unless he knew what he was talking atooul
A witch, or a supposed witch seeing there is no such thing,
la usually concidered to be a woman endowed with
supernatural and demoniac powers of a special end peculiar
sort Since this "wise men" announced there was no such
thing Is It not reasonable to assume that he end his
aesocietee had examined every spirit that does now or has in
the past, occupied every “house of day” created from the
time of Adam and Eve down to the lateel baby bom,
appraised end eeeeeeed these spirits end found that none
could be classified In the “witch category”!
How In the world did they accomplish such a stupendous
teak in a relatively short life ttmel Have often thought I would
Ilk# to ask this “learned professor" If they had developed ■
spiritual test-tube" at the cemetery, or seminary, In which
they can Isolate spirits and determine their character,
powers, limitations, etc?
Far be It from me to be guilty of heresy, but frankly. 1 am
skeptical Why, the “rooster" that made this announcement
in behalf of himself and his collaborators was af the time only
about tweniy-ftve years of agel But these are the days of
marveld Ones heard of a colored preacher who made the
charov that all women were possessed of seven devils. Hie
official board ‘ceded him on the carper and demanded
Scripture for such a statement Hie reply wee that Scripture
recorded Mary M agdelene as the only women who tied seven
devils cast out end therefore ell the rest of them stfli had amt
According to this reasoning all men must be poseeeeed ot e
legion of devils"! Believe I could come nearer going along
with the colored preacher than the “divinity professor".
In Ezekiel 111:4 God says “Behold, aH souls are mine—the
soul that slnneth shall die " God Almighty created all spirits,
ail souls! If you want to spend your time and occupy your
mental factory with the problem of why He permitted some to
get evil—He telle us It wee man's own choice—you ere at
liberty to do so, but ee for me, end I would advlts you to do
the same. I inland to spend the rest of my time end occupy
my mental member with the |ob end getting all the assistance
I can from The Holy Spirit, In departing end fleeing from evil,
In fighting evil spirits, even hunting for witches and witch
doctors—and I believe I have enough spiritual deacecnment
to spot and detect a big bunch of the letter class—“Ye suffer
fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise!’'
