de Havilland’s ‘ Wind’ fame lives on
Kennedy’s ’64 visit charmed coeds

More a sex symbol than a
political Figure, dashing young
Senator Edward Kennedy daz
zled thousands of University
coeds with a broad Kennedy
smile and visions of Camelot
during his appearance on this
campus May 4. 1%4
Three standing ovations from
the mostly female crowd of 6500
in the Coliseum punctuated
Kennedy's speech as a campus
still in mourning for an assas
sinated president welcomed the
man people called “a future
president.”
"Let us say in 1964 that the
cause of all mankind is the cause
of America.” Kennedy said to a
dicering crowd, proving himself
a match for JFK's colorful
thetoric.
Hints of the future crept into
Kennedy's speech when he
assured students that "govern
ment properly run and control
led can enhance rather than
restrict freedom." That state
ment was a political jab at
Senator Barry Goldwatcr. who
warned the University in 1963
that federal control was rising
and freedom was declining.
"Those who say they value
individual freedom the most are
usually the ones who oppose
programs which would extend
that freedom.” he said.
With a flash of Kennedy Fire,
he said. "If the Soviet Union
wants friendship, let it earn
it—if our hostility, let it provoke
it.”
Campaigning for the 1964
presidential election. Kennedy
praised the South as "a full
partner in American prosper
ity" and urged Georgians to
believe in their race-torn state
"not as a stronghold of reaction
but of progresss.”
A fan scene worthy of a rock
star’s followed the senator s
speech when, in the words of
the 1964 Red and Black. "Ken
nedy was engulfed in a sea of
University femininity, each
squealing for an autograph w ith
outstretched arms.” Police
finally were forced to clear a

Forty years after she created
the Film role of Melanie Hanoi
ton Wilkes, that eternally cour
ageous embodiment of Southern
gentility. Olivia de Havilland
reflected on the Filming of Gone
With The Wind for a special
American Film Institute show
ing at Washington D.C.'s Ken
nedy Center.
Melanie may have been a bit
too sweetly suffering both on
Film and in the book, but dc
Havilland is considerably fristi-'
er than her most famous role.
Her fans insist there could
only have been one Melanie,
but dc Havilland gives credit for
Retting the part to Jack Warner 's
wife. Warner had de Havilland
under contract and was reluc
tant to give her up to shoot what
he termed—jealously, per
haps—"the biggest bust in
town.''
"So 1 did something really
daring.” said de Havilland. "I
called up Mrs. Warner and
asked her to lunch at the
Beverly Hills Brown Derby. She
was really the deciding factor
and softened Jack’s resist
ance.”
The tumultuous procession of
directors on the Gone With The
Wind set—George Cukor. Vic
tor Fleming and Sam Wood all
shared the job—was a tremen
dous strain on the cast. Clark
Gable worried that Cukor, with
his reputation as a women's
director, might damage Gable's
development of the Rhett Bulter
role.
“He took that role so serious
ly.” de Havilland said. "He was
a v. .star, you know....he had
io live up to the ideal of millions
of Americans.”
Gable's one major conflict
with the pari «»l Klicti was the
sccnc in which Rhctl weeps
about Scarlett '* miscarriage.
Not only was the scene tech
nically difficult, dc Havilland
recalled, hut Gable fell that kind
of emotion was unmanly, both
for himself and for Rhctl.
"Bui ai the Final rehearsal we
could sense lhai Gable had
committed himself...he showed
grief, remorse, despair...and of
course he was wonderful.”
If Gable had his doubts about
Cukor as a director, dc Havil
land was devastated when
Cukor left the set. Cukor
directed one of de Havilland's
most dramatic scenes: Melanie
giving birth during Atlanta's
attack by Yankee troops, de
Havilland disguised herself as a
nurse at a lais Angeles Inspital
lor a day and reported hack to
Cukor dial labor pains "were
n«M continuous, but came in
waves."
To implement this bit of
background knowledge. (ukor
huddled out of camera range
and pinched de Havilland's
ankle to cue her "waves of
pain" and ladylike moans.
Gentle Melanie and Fiery
Scarlett—the real life personal
ities of de Havilland and Vivien
Leigh were actually the oppo
site. Leigh was too much of a
lady to fake a retch in the scene
where Scarlett was desperately
hungry after the pillage of Tara
by the Yankees, but agreed to
Film the scene and dub in the
sound later.
On hearing Leigh's lackluster
attempts at vomiting, de Havil
land intervened and insisted she
could do much heller. I he
sound man agreed, and dc
Havilland's rendering is the one
heard in the Film.
Forty years later, de Havil
land has the same spirit,
tempered with a tremendous
warmth and grace, that she
showed as Melanie. Melanie
was a survivor, de Havilland
said, of a "lost civilization.”
And so is Olivia de Havilland—
ihe Iasi surviving cast member
of one ot the most spectacular,
best-loved movies every made—
the last survivor of a golden era
in Hollywood's history—a sur
vivor of a legend.
They don't make them like
Gone With The Wind anymore.
And they don't make them
like Olivia de Havilland any
more.
