197?
In April, one of the most
bizarre events of the decade
occurred when 83 students
protesting the University's
sophomore residency require
ment were arrested in the
office of President Fred
Davison They were holding u
“sit-in.”
Twenty-five of the students
pleaded guilty to charges of
criminal trespass, but eight
decided to fight the case in
court, and subsequently be
came known as the Athens
Eight." Actually the Athens
Eight was seven students and
one University faculty mem
her
The eight were tried in
November, but Judge (Irady
Pittard declared a mistrial
when the jury could not reach
a verdict. A new trial was
scheduled for 1973.
The University got its own
radio station Oct 16 when
WUOG-FM went on the air in a
special ceremony Davison
threw the switch to begin
operation
On Oct. 25. Soule Hall was
changed from a"residence hall
to a training facility for
Georgia state prison personnel

Campus politics took a turn
for the hilarious in February
when two students ran for
student body president as a
composite candidate called
‘‘Ima Duo" with a slogan “two
heads are better than one
However, the pair, Steve
Nail and David Watson, had
their election hopes crushed
when the Student Judiciary
ruled Ima Duo could not be put
on the ballot in an appropriate
ly worded decision: “Denied
denied."
In the fall, Prince Charles of
Great Britain attended the
Georgia-Kentucky football
game
In July. Arts and Sciences
Dean Jack Stephens resigned
Jack Payne was named acting
dean and eventually became
the permanent dean
1978
1978 saw the election of a
joke candidate to the post of
student body president, the
start of planning for the new
student center, and a dramat
ic, although short shift in the
format at campus radio station
WUOG
Roger "The Unknown
Candidate" Strauss, who
clowned his way through the
election with a paper sack over
his head, literally bagged the
election after defeating run-off
opponent Tim Lewis. The vote
was 1432-974 I deserve this."
Strauss said
Ken Gallo, a disc jockey for
WUOG outraged WUOG listen
ers with a programming hoax
in February During Gallo's
regular evening music show,
he played top 40 music, and
told listeners the station had
changed its format
Also in February, the legis
lature promised the University
$400.0 n 0 to plan and design a
new student center for the
University.
1979
1979 was the year that
brought two ice storms to
Athens in the same month, the
abolition of student govern
ment and the firing of a
University System Chancellor
The two ice storms came in
February on the 8th and 20th
The first storm dumped nearly
one and a half inches of snow
on the city and left 45 percent
of Athens in the dark Along
with Hartwell. Athens was one
of the hardest hit areas The
second storm wasn't as hard
on the power lines, but icy
road conditions forced the
University to close for the first
time since 1973
The Student Government
Association was abolished in
April by a student vote of
1267-862 The abolition vote was
set after students elected
Harold Mulherin student body
president on an abolitionist
ticket Mulherin just got by
run-off opponent Billy Key by a
1661-1472 vote By a senate
action, the vote was binding
and the University locked the
SGA doors April 6
Chancellor George Simpson
was fired by the Board of
Regents in a closed June
session, reportedly because
members of the board believed
Simpson had amassed too
much power in his 14 year
tenure. Tech’s Vice President
for Academic Affairs Vernon
Crawford was named acting
chancellor until a permanent
successor could be found
1973
Faculty discontent, the
Athens Eight, and student
elections headlined the local
news in 1973.
On March 7. James Cornish,
an anthropology instructor, left
the University after drawing
heavy criticism for refusing to
sign a loyalty oath required of
all University faculty Cornish
returned to his native
Pennsylvania to teach
The Athens Eight lost their
second trial in February, but
appealed their case to the
Georgia Supreme Court in
September No decision was
returned However. May 1 was
a day of moral victory for the
eight when the sophomore
residency requirement was
dropped
Results of the annual student
elections were withheld by the
Student Judiciary Council in
April until hearings could be
conducted concerning the
qualifications of all 208 candi
dates.
However, at 2:30 a m. on
April 13. the allegations were
withdrawn, and the results
showed Steve Patrick to be the
new SGA president His
Coalition party swept the three
executive spots and won a
majority in the Senate.
1974
One hundred University
students celebrated the new
year by participating in a Jan
15 march and an afternoon
rally in support of ERA in
Atlanta
Two days later, activist Dick
Gregory spoke to University
students and called for
President Nixon’s resignation.
Gregory cited the Ellsburg
burglary, the Vesco affair and
the ITT deal as evidence that
Watergate was not “an iso
lated incident." and said that
Nixon should resign “from an
integrity standpoint."

Next to O’Malley 's
ties. In Athens. 2000 students
staged a sit-down strike in the
middle of Baxter Street to
protest the arrest of a male
streaker. Athens police used
tear gas to disperse the crowd.
A number of students suffered
from reactions to the fumes.
Gubernatorial candidate
Lester Maddox, after being
interrupted by four streakers
during a question and answer
session, said the fad was as
ridiculous as taking an old
milk cow and putting her in a
mink coat.

New people continued to be
moved into old positions in 1975
as Louise McBee became
assistant vice president for
academic affairs, Daniel
Hallenback became director of
University housing, and
Dwight Douglas became dean
of students
University professors won a
law suit in Fulton County
Superior Court to get pay
raises that had been promised
earlier by the Board of
Reg&its, but had later been
•Tcwwiided. The ■ court held the
board was in breach of
contract in rescinding the
raises. As one University
professor said, “Just because
you work for the state of
Georgia doesn’t mean you
should lose your Constitutional
rights."
The proposed student center
was front page news as
University administrators
moved it to first priority on a
list of University needs
On April Fools Day, ground
breaking ceremonies were held
for the non-existent student
center. Dr. Louise McBee and
Dr. William Powell were in
attendance at the hoax.

.One of the biggest stories of
the year was the Dogs’ 21-0
trouncing of Alabama between
the hedges. Someone driving
into Athens the Friday before
the game must have thought
the town was going stark
raving mad All over Athens,
students were driving around
in convertibles, vans, pick-up
trucks, or anything with
wheels. Tickets to the game
sold for as much as $120 and
an estimated 12,000 fans
watched the game from
outside the stadium. Pizzas
were delivered to the tracks,
and kegs were prevalent.
Early Saturday morning, a
trajp tried to get through the
•bracks, but finally gave up,
returning the way it had come.
In other news, Journalism
Dean Scott Cutlip and Law
Dean Ralph Beaird took their
