Durham’s Dogs build shiny
record in holiday campaign
By ED LEGGE
Assistant sports editor
The Bulldog basketballers emerged from the
Christmas break with their most impressive
record in 31 years after posting a successful
holiday campaign The Bulldogs entered the
Vanderbilt game with an 8-2 overall record and
a 1-2 SEC mark.
The Bulldogs’ wins over the holidays included
victories over Georgia Tech and Ole Miss,
while both their losses came at the hands of
SEC toes, Kentucky and Florida.
“I think we’re improving,” said head coach
Hugh Durham of his team’s play over the
holidays.
The Bulldogs remained undefeated until
mid-December, when they suffered a 95-69
setback against the Kentucky Wildcats The
game was not a total loss for the team,
however, as the Dogs received unprecedented)
support from a standing-room-only Omni
crowd. ’ The Kentucky game says a lot for the
University,” Durham said. "The people at
Georgia take a lot of pride in their school "
By year’s end, Durham’s Dogs were 8-2 and
heavy favorites to knock off the Florida Gators
in the first game of 1980 The Gators were not
as hospitable as expected, however, as they
handed the Bulldogs their second loss. The
young Bulldogs could not adjust to the Gators’
slowed-down game and conceded defeat, 57-52.
“It takes experienced players to play with
the same intensity in a slow game as in a fast
one," Durham said of the loss to Florida. "We
had enough effort, but a lot of it was wasted."
Freshman forward Dominique Wilkins led
the Bulldogs in scoring over the holidays.
Wilkins averaged 20 points a game and posted
a 545 field goal percentage, his best game of
the break coming against Lenoir-Rhyne in a 26
point performance.
Terry Fair proved to be a top all-round
player at the other forward position as he
averaged 9 7 rebounds and 12 7 points a game
"Terry’s done a very good job defensively...he
plays hard, and he's team oriented," Durham
said
Jimmy Daughtry and Lavon Mercer
continued to provide leadership for the young
Bulldogs over the break. Daughtry had his best
game against Ole Miss as he scored 21 points,
and Mercer was the top shot-blocker with 25
rejects. "Daughtry and Mercer give us the
leadership we need," Durham said
Freshman point-guard Derrick Floyd was not
as successful at his post as the other starters,
but Durham was quick to point out that Floyd
should not be counted out at his position. “He's
played well " Durham said, noting that "it’s
harder for a person in his position He’s
handling the ball a lot, and there's a lot of
pressure on the ball." Durham further noted
that point-guard is a tough slot for any
freshman to fill.
Eric Marbury was the top Bulldog coming off
the bench, and Durham labeled him “as
talented as any of our other players ..our sixth
starter." Durham said that he was pleased
with the performance of all his team during the
holidays, noting that he "would like to cite
th*m all.”
But the holidays are now over for the
Georgia Bulldogs, as this month they will enter
the thick of the SEC race. The Dogs will take
on their fifth SEC foe at Mississippi State
Wednesday and then return to Athens on
Saturday to face nationally-ranked LSU. "If we
beat Miss. State, we’ll be 10-2 going into the
LSU game, and if we then beat LSU, we ll be
11-2 with a couple of big wins under our belts,”
Durham said.
Durham stressed the importance of a good
turnout for the LSU game on Saturday, which
will be regionally televised He also expressed
appreciation for the support the Dog fans have
given his team thus far. "I would like to give
special thanks to our fans for their outstanding
support." the Bulldog mentor said. "They’ve
been positive in their support, and they’ve
shown a lot of class.”

Ladies fall to Ga. State, 64-58

A Iasi-paced offense helped
the women's basketball team to
a S-l record over the Christmas
break However, a stingy Geor
gia Stale defense upended the
Lady Bulldogs 64-58 Friday
nigh,.
Forward Michelle Hartley had
her best game of the vear in the
Bulldog defeat as she pumped ; n
18 points. Bernie Locke added
15 points, while Denise Dunlap
chipped in 14 as the Lady Dogs
fell to 8-4 for the season.
Coach Andy Landers said his
team executed well during the
Christmas break.
"We played better during
Christmas than we have during
any other part of the season."
Landers pointed out. "We
worked pretty hard during the
break and since we had no
classes, we could concentrate
fully on playing ball."
With the exception of losing
to Georgia Southern 68-56.
Georgia scored over 79 points in
every game during the break.
Landers attributed the consis
tent scoring to improved for
ward play.
"Our guard play has been
steady all year, but I was really
pleased with the inside game
during the holidays," he said.
"The Georgia Southern game
was the only gam': we have
played poorly in so far. I think
we performed exceptionally dur
ing our last three games of the
holidays."
Georgia's improved front line
play has helped the Lady
Bulldogs ;» a 3-0 SEC record.
"We haven't rebounded as
well as we ought to have in the
early part of the season. But. all
of the forwards have started
rebounding well." Landers said
"Another thing that we man
aged to do during the break was
to put good games together
back-to-back.”
Friday night, however. Geor
gia's inside play returned to
pre-Christmas form as the Pan
thers dominated the hoards.
"We did a pretty good job in
the first half but we got killed on
the offensive boards," Landers
noted. "They got 10 offensive
rebounds in the first half and
converted six of them into
baskets. Our forward play was
very lackadaisical."
The Lady Bulldogs will hate
an opportunity to get quick
revenge against Georgia State
as the Panthers come to Athens
Wednesday night. Landers
maintained that his team won’t
do anything different against
Georgia State.
"We’ll have to get our
perimeter people to shoot mor<
than they did. Bernie Lock*
didn’t take as many shots as she
has to take for us to win."
Landers said
Landers did say that the Lad\
Bulldogs may play more man to
man defense Wednesday night
"We zoned them last Frida\
night and they beat us. so we’re
going to have to play them
closer this time."
