70s SPORTS
From p. 1
1970 was one of the few years
of the last decade that the
football team didn’t go to a
bowl. The 5-5 team's highlight
was a iiemendous 31-17 victory
over the Auburn Tigers and Pat
Sullivan.
Ken Rosemond's basketball
team featured center Bob
Lienhard who guided the squad
to its highest SEC finish in 30
years with an 11-7 record and
third place. Lienhard averaged
21 points a game and hit on 63
percent of his shots.

under the direction of Liz
Murphey. won the Georgia

championships while the foot
ball team missed the conference
crown by just one game.

tennis Dogs to a 25-1 record and
won numerous individual

the NCAA but it ruled against
him.
1972
Dick Copas’ golfers and
Magill’s tennis team once again
won SEC titles. Lyn Lott and Bill
Krat/ert. now in the pro ranks,
helped the Dogs gain the golf
crown.
All American Birchmore had
a dual match record of 26-2 as
he took Georgia to a 28-1
season. The lone loss was to
Miami and ended the magnifi
cent 76-match streak for wins.
Dooley's team posted a 7-4
record, defeated Liberty Bowl-
bound Georgia Tech 27-7. but
failed to get its own bowl bid.
Poulos rushed for 593 yards,
good enough for eighth in the
SEC.
The basketball Bulldogs came
out with a 14-12 season with the

In ’73, the women’s athletic
program got a boost when a
$15,000 grant was awarded from
the athletic association. The
women had originally requested
$65,000.
Wallace Butts, head football
coach from 1939 to 1960, died of
a heart attack at age 68.
Horace King, the first black to
ever start for Georgia, was
among the team leaders in
rushing. Though the Dogs
finished at just 6-4-1, they did
have some highlights. Georgia
beat North Carolina State rather
handily. 31-12, as the ACC
champs were held to their
lowest point total of the season.
Ken Rosemond coached his
last season of basketball here,
but it didn't inspire the team
much, as they came out with a
10-16 record (5-13 in SEC play).
Tim Bassett, now captain of the
New Jersey Nets, won the
league's rebounding crown,
pulling down over 14 per game.
1974
Tennis All-American Diaz
was voted the state's amateur
athlete of the year as he led
Georgia to the SEC title. He
reached the fourth round of the
NCAA’s in both doubles and
singles and compiled a 21-1 dual
match record.
Women’s basketball returned
after a two-year layoff and
played their games in the P.E.
Building. This was also the first
year for women’s swimming.
Martha Washington was the
coach as the team beat Georgia
Southern in its first-ever meet.
From this time on. the women
had teams instead of clubs.
The football team had an
average year with a 6-6 record.
A 17-16 win over Florida at
Jacksonville was the high point
of the season while the lows
were a 34-14 loss to Georgia
Tech in a driving rain storm and
a 21-10 loss to Miami of Ohio in
the Tangerine Bowl. Glynn
Harrison had a good year at
running back, rushing for 978
yards behind the blocking of
tackle Craig Hertwig, an AP
All-American selection.
Spec Towns* the dean of SEC
track coaches after 34 years,
saw his team go unbeaten in its
dual meets, including a 75-69
win over Auburn.
Lee Cunningham's gym
nastics team went 8-1 and
placed third in the tough
Southern Intercollegiate
Championships.
John Guthrie coached his first
basketball season of what was to
be a dismal career. The Dogs
could manage just six victories
and only two in the conference.
Junior Bill Magarity paced the
scoring with 16.8 a game.
1975

explosive offense which

On May 6, Henry Fcild
Tennis Stadium was dedicated
in a match with mighty Southern
Cal. Over 3000 Buildog fans
turned out to watch Magill's
team stun the Trojans 5-3. The
NCAA tournament was hosted
here for the second time and has
served as a semi permanent site
since.
The basketball continued its
hard luck with a 9-18 season.
David Reavis was the top
Bulldog, averaging 14.3 a game.
Georgia's swim team
produced six NCAA qualifiers.
Ted Greve became the first
Georgia swimmer to compete in
six events at the national
championships.
The women's golf team

Finally, Georgia basketball
fans got what they had been
waiting for—a new basketball
coach. After John Guthrie had a
fifth straight losing season, he
was fired and Hugh Durham
was hired from Florida State.
Dick C'opas' golfers took the
SEC crown and finished second
in the NCAA. Sophomore Griff
Moody finished in a second-
place tie in the individual
competition.
The Wonderdogs finished 9-
2-1 after a loss to Stanford in the
Bluebonnet Bowl. SEC Plaver-
of-the-Year Willie McClendon,
now a Chicago Bear, rushed for
a Bulldog single-season high
with 1312 yards as Georgia
came from behind to win several
games. And who can forget
Larry Munson's description ol
Rex Robinson's game winning
field goal at Kentucky?
The women gymnasts, led by
Cathy Shot well, finished high in
the national rankings. Terri
Moody. Griff’s sister, helped
the women's golf team to one of
their finest seasons ever.
Baseballcr Joe Stewart led
the SEC in hitting at .438.
1979
It didn't take coach Durham
long to give the basketball
program a shot in the arm as the
team finished with a non losing
season for the first time since
1971 at 14-14. Senior Walter
Daniels closed out his brilliant
career as Georgia’s greatest
player, but was unjustly left off
the All-SEC first team.
The future appeared to be
bright when Durham signed a
pair of high school All-
Americans in the Spring.
Dominique Wilkins and Terry
Fair.
Hopes of a good football
season turned sour quickly as
the Dogs lost their first three of
the season. Rex Robinson be
came the best placekickcr in
SEC history while distraught
senior quarterback Jeff Pyburn
sat on the bench much of the
season while Buck Belue
started. Georgia could have
locked up a Sugar Bowl berth
with a win over Auburn, but
James Brooks and Joe Cribbs
prevented this from happening.
Andy Ling’s women gym
nasts finished 13th in the
country.
Magill’s netters made it to the
NCAA Tournament where they
were edged by Pepperdine. 5-4
in the first round.
The wrestling team’s future
was in jeopardy after the
executive committee of the
athletic board recommended to
dissolve the team.
Georgia swimmers win big
pated in the Cotton Bowl where
it fell to Arkansas.
The season’s most exciting
play came in the Florida game
which Georgia pulled out. 10-7.
With 3:24 on the clock and
trailing 7-3. tight end Richard
Appleby faked an end-around
and tossed the ball 55 yards in
the air to a streaking Gene
Washington who raced into the
endzone for a game-winning
80-yard touchdown.
Even though the basketball
team suffered through an 8-17
season, a freshman out of
Atlanta by the name of Jacky
Dorsey at least gave the fans
something to cheer about. He
set a school record for points in
a season as he averaged 25.8
per outing (12th in the country)
while making the All-SEC team.
Jim Whatley retired as base
ball coach after 25 seasons and
the mentor did it in style. The
'75 Bulldogs went 11-4 in the
conference and captured the
Eastern Division of the SEC.
The team bowed to LSD in the
league championship.
Manuel Diaz stunned
Stanford's John Whitlinger. 7-6,
6-2. Whitlinger had entered the
match as the defending NCAA
singles champion but he
couldn't handle the talented
Diaz. The team took its fifth
straight SEC title as it rallied to
tic Florida.
Cunningham’s gymnastics
team was ranked number two in
the South behind LSU.
1976
This was the year of the
Junkyard Dogs as Dooley’s
troops captured the SEC title
and then went on to the Sugar
Bowl where they lost to Tony
Dorsett and the No. 1 Pitt
Panthers.
The highlight of the season
came in the fourth game of the
season when Bear Bryant
brought his Alabama Crimson
Tide between the hedges. Play

Stadium and thousands others
outside, the Dogs handed the

over the University of Virginia
Monday night at Stegeman

Wheeler swam the 1000-
meter freestyle event in
10:20.375, breaking the record
and capturing first place She
went on to win the 100-meter
freestyle and finish second in
the 200-meter freestyle.
The victories gave the men a
record of 6-0 in dual meets, the
best start ever for a Georgia
swim team The women also
remain undefeated, improving
their mark to 4-0.
"We swam very well." coach
Pete Scholle said "This was
our third meet in four days. In
a way, I am surprised our
team has been so strong and
that we have remained un
defeated. There are no real
standouts on our team, but we
are strong overall. There is a
great deal of depth and there is
a team effort. I'm very proud
of our team’s performance."
“Virginia is an impressive
team, although they don’t have
much depth They’re strong in
the 1-2 positions. They’re also
tired because they’ve been on
the road for the last ten days.
Stegeman Pool is very difficult
to dive in. and their divers
performed extremely well.”
Bill Weiss, captain of the
Georgia men’s team, shared
Scholle's views.
"This was one of the meets
we were really working hard
for. We beat a good team and
we have two more really
challenging meets coming up.
After we beat South Carolina
this weekend, we were really
in the groove for this meet.
"We have so much depth this
year,” Weiss said "We defin
itely have a higher success
rate. We have more first place
finishes and also more second
and third place finishes We
have a good chance to win the
SEC."
Coach Jack Baverle was
equally proud of the Lady
Bulldogs
"We swam well, but not
really fast. We got some
breaks, but I know that our
girls can swim a little hit
faster
"Virginia is a good team.
They are the team that had the
best shot at beating us so far
We also had a difficult meet
with Tennessee. We play
Illinois State Thursday, and if
we swim well, we will win. We
were solid tonight, but not
terrific. We knew what to
expect from Virginia and we
knew what we had to do to
beat them."

the teams looking ahead to a
tough meet with North
Carolina Jan 25.

The Georgia Lady Bulldogs will be shooting
for a taste of revenge tonight as they take on
the Georgia State Lady Panthers at 7:30 in the
Georgia Coliseum.
Andy Landers’ women’s basketball team will
be hoping to avenge a 64-58 loss to the Lady
Panthers last Friday, and according to
Landers, the team will also be trying to stay
alive in the state championship running
“We can’t afford to lose another state game
at home, or two games to the same team." the
head coach said. "If we’re going to be seeded
or be seeded high in the the State Tournament,
this game with Georgia State is really
important.”
The Lady Bulldogs and Georgia State have
identical 9-4 records on the season, and the
Lady Panthers came within one shot of
defeating 17th-ranked Mercer last week.
"They beat us by six the last time we
played." Landers said of Georgia State, "and
Mercer had to score in the last second of their
game to beat them—they’ve got a good team."
The Lady Bulldogs are coming off of a 79-63
victory over the University of South
Carolina-Aiken Monday night
Cynthia Collins led a balanced Georgia
scoring attack with 14 points F'our other
players hit for double figures in the game
Denise Dunlap had 13 points. Bernie Locke shot
for 12, Teresa Duncan had 11, and Michelle
Hartley added 10
Georgia jumped out to a 21-7 lead after the
first eight minutes by imploying a full court
press and forcing several Lady Pacer
turnovers in the first half Barbara Williams,
who had a game-high 27 points, was the only
South Carolina player to score in the opening
stretch
The Lady fellildogt sell led tor :* 42 27
halftime margin, and then watched as Georgia
State rallied to within five points midway
•brough the second half, 58-53.
Three quick baskets by Locne and Collins
and four free throws by Iu>cke helped the Lady
Bulldogs pull away to an eventual 20-point
margin before winning by 16
The second-half lapse by his team had
Landers concerned enough to put Georgia back
on the floor after the game for a full-paced
workout in preparation for Georgia State
"I’m concerned about the way we’ve been
playing.” he stated “We haven’t played a
solid 40 minutes since Christmas We need to
snap out of the way we’ve been playing if we're
going to win tonight."
"I don’t think we were as intense in the
second half as we were in the first half, he
said of Monday nights game. South Carolina
came out prepared for a fast, running game in
the second half and took it to us. We were a
little bit lackadaisical, but it was good we
pulled awav.'’
we were supposed to win that game and we
knew we were supposed to win." Landers said.
"It’s hard to be sharp and get motivated when
we play a team we’re supposed to beat By 40
points.”
