Newspaper Page TextThe Red and Black, Wednesday, September 17, 1980 P*ge 5 Dogs’ next four at home By MACK BROWNING Assistant sports editor The Georgia Bulldogs have gotten off to a fst start and are beginning a stretch run that includes four straight home games The Bulldogs play Clemson Saturday in their second home game of the year The Tigers are rebuilding on offense as only four starters return A battle has begun at the tailback slot vacated by Lester Brown Chuck McSwain. the 1979 Atlantic (’oast Conference Rookie of the Year, played extensively toward the end of last year, but he is expected to receive a strong challenge from sophomore Cliff Austin It's the defense, however, that will keep Clemson in ball games this year Steve Durham. Ray Brown and Charlie Bauman lead a fierce Tiger unit Georgia faces its third straight home challenge on Sept. 27 against another Southwest Conference foe. the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian The Dogs and the Frogs have only met one other time before: the 1942 Orange Bowl which Georgia won. 40-26. Following an open date Georgia hosts the Ole Miss Rebels on Oct. 11 at Sanford Stadium. The Rebs will be led by quarterback John Fourcade, a top candidate for All-SEC honors and possibly All-America honors Fourcade had over 2000 yards total offense last season and started off right this season bv running and throwing for over BOO yards against Texas A&M Vanderbilt comes to Athens on October 18 for Georgia’s homecoming The Dogs have won six in a row over the Commodores. Head Coach George MacIntyre has eight starters retuining. but Vandy will be without its two biggest offensive thrc*,.t- of 1979, running back Frank Mordica and All-SEC receiver Preston Brown. Defense killed Vandy last year The Commodores gave up 38 points per game, including a 66-3 shellacking at the hands of Alabama and a 63-28 loss to Ole Miss The situation may not be much brighter this season as only six defensive itirtMl return The Dogs travel to l^exington. KY. for a 7:30 p.m. game against Kentucky. Oddly. Georgia has had reasonable success at Kentucky as they have not lost there since 1956 The matchup two years ago almost turned into a nightmare. But few forget Larry Munson's thrilling call when Rex Robinson kicked a field goal that beat the Wildcats 17-16 in the closing seconds of the game Heisman Trophy candidate George Rogers of Duluth. Ga leads a veteran South Carolina outfit into Sanford Stadium on Nov. 1. The Gamecocks have defeated Georgia the past two years, including a 27-20 come-from-behind victory in Athens last year Rogers may have some of the load taken off him this year with the addition of junior fullback Johnnie Wright who sat out last year with an injury but gained over 9(H) yards in 1978. A veteran line helps pave the way for the running of Rogers and Wright, and tackle George Schechterly is a man to watch in that powerful offensive line. The Gamecocks should be no better or worse on defense where six starters return, including defensive back Robert Perlotte The annual "cocktail party’’ in Jacksonville against Charley Pell’s Florida Gators on Nov. 8 begins the stretch run for the Bulldogs Florida is coming off its worst season since 1946 The Gators struggled to an 0-10-1 record in Pell’s first year But Florida has most of its starters returning. 10 on offense and eight on defense Florida will have to depend on youth in many areas. Sophomore tight end Chris Faulkner and "Cadillac’’ Chris Collinsworth will be tough to handle for anybody on offense Stall photo-Brian Schwartz Walker will lead Georgia’s running attack... David Little leads an experienced Gator defense that was decimated by injuries last year. A preseason All-SEC choice. Little missed two games last year but was second on the team in total tackles Georgia hopes this year will be a charm against the Auburn Tigers on Nov 15 The War Eagles have dashed the Dogs' hopes for a Sugar Bowl berth for two years in a row. and the two teams could meet again with a conference title on the line The Tigers are serving their final year of a two-year probation. Two years ago. William Andrews. Joe Cribbs and James Brooks were all around to terrorize opposing defenses Andrews graduated, leaving Cribbs and Brooks Auburn still ran roughshod over nearly everybody in 1979 Now. Cribbs has graduated. Maybe Brooks by himself will be easier on other defenses. Maybe, but it’s not likely. One of the biggest games of all is the final contest, when Georgia Tech comes to Athens on Nov. 29. The Yellow Jackets are under new head coach Bill Curry and a new athletic director. Homer Rice. Quarterback Mike Kelley directs the Tech offense and has capable receivers in Matt Rank and Kris Kentera Defensively, the Jackets have seven starters back from a fairly stingy 1979 corps. Georgia’s remaining schedule has at least three teams that could crack the nation's top 20. and. barring any upsets it could be Georgia-Auburn again this year with a Sugar Bowl bid at stake .while Belue will fire up the passing game.
