Vanderbilt downs ruggers
By MIKE CHRISTENSEN
Staff writer
In an interesting reversal of roles, Vanderbilt’s men’s
rugby team avenged the slaughter of the school’s football
team by whipping the Georgia ruggers 16-6 Sunday in
Athens
’’Vanderbilt's team is every bit as good as it was last
year, said Georgia coach Lex Maccubbin ‘ They played
extremely well and seemed to be in better shape than we
were."
The loss evened the Georgia ruggers’ record at 2-2 and
came on the heels of a solid performance against the
Atlanta High Country club last week
Vanderbilt, the 1980 SEC tournament champion,
advanced the ball effectively most of the game, but it was
Georgia mistakes and missed opportunities that made the
difference.
Vandy got on the scoreboard first with a try following a
lineout near the Georgia goal The successful conversion
kick made it 6-0
After failing on two good scoring chances. Georgia got a
break near the midfield sideline when a Vandy back
dropped a lateral pass Georgia’s Barry Askins scooped up
the ball and pitched it to fleet outside center Barry
Mitchell, who raced some 50 yards for a try Bruce Gibson
converted to tie the score at 6-6.
However. Vanderbilt continued to move the ball
impressively and added a pair of penalty kicks to take a
12-6 halftime lead
The pivotal play of the contest came early in the second
half when a Vandy forward intercepted a Georgia lineout
pass and went 75 yards to give Vanderbilt its 16-6
advantage
Vanderbilt missed two penalty kicks and Georgia one
over the remainder of the match as play became
increasingly rough Two Georgia players, including
piacekicker Gibson, left the field with injuries.
The Georgia women's club enjoyed a measure of revenge
Sunday in defeating Florida 4-0 and improving its record to
2-2-1 The Florida club beat Georgia 20-6 last week in
Jacksonville
Bibi Haine got the only score in the women's match.
In other matches played Sunday, Georgia's men’s second
and third sides won matches over their Vanderbilt
counterparts by scores of 11-0 and 4-3, respectively.
The Georgia men and women travel to Lexington. Ky
this weekend for matches with Kentucky Sunday afternoon

LSU creeps up
onBama, Dogs
By DAN CHILDS
Staff writer
While Southeastern Conference juggernauts Alabama and
Georgia rolled up impressive victories Saturday, the LSU
Tigers made a little noise of their own as they survived a
catfight in I^exington. Ky. to keep alive their hopes of an
SEC crown.
With a 17-10 win over the Kentucky Wildcats, the Tigers
upped their conference mark to 3-0 and are 5-2 overall.
LSU waited until the final minute to pull it out as
quarterback Alan Kisher found the end zone with only 41
seconds showing on the clock. The victory over the
mediocre Wildcats did little to establish the Tigers as a
real threat to the SEC title, but with an undefeated record
in conference play they are mathematically very much in
the conference race. The Tigers will be idle next weekend
before hitting the road for three weeks in a row to square
off against Ole Miss, Alabama and Mississippi State
After Alabama just barely beat Rutgers a week and a
half ago, it was felt in many quarters that the Tide might
be in for trouble against an improving Tennessee team But
Bama traveled to Knoxville and on national TV presented
their case for the justification of their number one ranking
as they thoroughly disassembled the Vols, 27-0.
The Crimson Tide, 6 0 overall and 4-0 in the SEC, is at
home Saturday against undefeated Southern Mississippi
Georgia did nothing to hurt its reputation as a national
power as it applied a 41-0 pasting to winless Vanderbilt.
Freshman tailback sensation Herschel Walker showed why
he was one of the nation's most sought after prospects last
year as he rushed for 283 yards and three touchdowns It
was the Bulldogs’ sixth win of the year and their third
against SEC foes The Dogs will be in Lexington Saturday
night for a battle with Kentucky.
After winning its first three, then dropping two of its last
three games, Mississippi State upset the Miami
Hurricanes, 34-31. The Maroons jumped out to a 24-10
advantage at the intermission before the Canes roared
liack in the third quarter with three touchdowns. State,
however put 10 points of their own on the board in the
second half to secure the victory and improve their overall
record to 5-2. With a 1-1 mark in conference play, the
Maroons will entertain Auburn Saturday in Starkville
The Florida Gators bounced back from a loss two weeks
ago to LSU as they payed a call on the Ole Miss Rebels and
on the strength of five Brian Clark field goals, whipped the
Rebs. 15-3. The Gators now sport a 4-1 record with a win
and a loss against conference rivals. Florida hosts
Louisville Saturday while Ole Miss, 1-6, has an
opportunity to get just what the doctor ordered as they face
Vanderbilt in Nashville.
The Auburn Tigers continued to be one of the major
disappointments in the SEC but did manage to pick up
their third victory against two defeats as they outlasted
weak Georgia Tech. 17-14.
