Health foods: You are what you (don ’ t) eat

Makes a man healthy..
Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin had one method for staying healthy
Today, Americans have many methods We jog, exercise
join health spas and eat health foods. But, are these so-called
health foods really healthy foods?
ft doesn’t take a genious to see that the health foods
business is a growing enterprise. The look of the day is
"natural” and health food store personnel cater to the con
sumer's every need. They offer food, vitamins, skin and hair
care products, to name a few. But let’s look more closely at
health foods.
Take sugar, for instance. Advertisers have gone over
board to tell us not to eat white sugar or table sugar I which is
100 percent sucrose) They tell us that sugar is bad for us and
that, aside from causing a person to gain weight through
excessive consumption, it also causes dental problems.
Some of the sugars (or sugar substitues) health enthusiasts
endorse for human consumption are honey, fructose (a fruit
sugar made from glucose sucrose) syrup and powder and
brown sugar. Studies show, however, that these sweeteners
react in the human bloodstream in the same way as white
sugar, because of the high sucrose levels.
While honey may be a "natural" sweetener, it is very high
in glucose (a starch sugar). Because of this, its value as a
sugar substitue is lessened. The other types of sweeteners
are, Indeed, manufactured and can handly be referred to as
“natural.”
But there is more to health foods than just sugar.
I^et’s examine the snack foods found in health food stores.
Are these snack foods really different from those found in
neighborhood supermarkets?
Many of the so-called health snack bars (carob-coated
bars, nut-and-fruit bars, high-protein bars and cereal bars)
also contain hydrogenated vegetable oil sodium caseinate la
sodium-salt phosphoprotein in dairy products), fructose,
artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and many other
ingredients found in popular brand snacks that health food
specialists readily condemn.
Another point to consider: how much higher is the protein
in the "hi-protein" snacks, when compared to popular brand
snacks? Many of the "healthy" snack bars are only a mere
two or three grams over the popular store brands in protein
Sampler pogos to
an Atlanta beat
By JOHN KUKLA
I had a dream the other night that Dick Clark was doing
‘American Bandstand” from the 40-Watt Club. He had just
pulled two denizens from the audience and asked them to
rate the new sampler LP, “Standard Deviation,” between 35
and 98.
Well,” said the young lady, “it’s pretty good. I like the
beat and I can pogo to it. I’ll give it an 85.”
Panic Records, Atlanta’s newest record company is behind
this LP, showcasing six Atlanta groups performing two songs
each. Atlanta is hoping to establish itself as a music capital in
all fields, and this album looks like a fairly good start in that
direction.
The only problem with this album is that all the groups
sound the same. This might be because the LP onty
showcases upbeat numbers, with the same “Rock Lobster ’
type beat pervading from start to finish
content.
There are more health food snacks than just “candy” bars.
There are also cookies, chips, nut mixes and fruit mixes. The
question is, how much better are these products than similar
products on the market, if at all?
Check the package labels; read the ingredients. Be
cautious and alert to terms such as: natural, nutritious,
organically grown, no preservatives and “contains no
sugar.” Question these claims by comparing package labels.
Also, just because it is called a health food, don't fall into
the trap of thinking it is also a dietetic food. Check the caloric
content of the product.
Chips (potato chips, corn chips), no matter how “natural”
they may be advertised, are high in carbohydrates (starch).
Oil (fat) can also be found in these natural chips. The result
of these two ingredients (com or potato and oil) equals high
caloric content—i.e., you gain weight
So, do you just give up eating everything? Of course not.
Just cut down on the amount of food you eat and on your
caloric intake. Balance your diet, save your money by
shopping comparatively and be healthier.

The Swimming Pool Q’s seem to fare best. “Stock Car
Sin," their opening song, is a crazed tribute to lust in the
grease pit that rocks out to such stirring words as: “Down in
Gerogia where the girls say do tell,’ Never say pajama at the
stock car motel." The other tune, “Misfit," is equally as
strong and one could expect a very entertaining debut album
from them.
Operator is up next, singing two Ivrically interesting songs
about bullies (“Big Man”) and bjtedom (“Flies on The
Wall"). The Basics, probably the most well-known of the
bunch, deliver a mediocre song in “Paddle Out" and a very
good song in “Trouble Lights.”
No Exit and KAO4S(chemistry majors, note) are en
joyable, with the best track from those groups being "Love
Radio” from KAC^S.if only to hear such lyrics as “I don’t
need ur love; I don’t need ur kiss; gotts radio; she fell down.”
Honestly, and we wonder where English majors are going.
The award for bad taste goes the the Restraints, who in
only two songs ("Cancer Dancer" and “I Cannot Be A Nun”)
manage to offend me more than Johnny Rotten ever could.
To borrow a cliche, you’ll be hearing a lot more from the
Pool Q’s, the Basics and Panic Records. “Standard
Deviation" is radio music and for the most part, a fun
riecord. Play it at your next party. Invite Dick Clark.
