Brown enjoying success
By JEFF GAITHER
Staff writer
Georgia s tight end position is settled Norris Brown is
the man with the big number 88 on his back you see
sprinting up and down the field snatching those Buck Belue
passes
I«ast year Brown shared the tight end position with
James Brown But. when he comes back from a spring
knee injury. James will be working in the interior line,
leaving the sole responsibility to Norris.
Norris Brown is currently third on the team in receptions
behind Amp Arnold and Lindsay Scott However, his six
catches have been good for a whopping 31 yard average,
which leads the team
Without a doubt Brown is enjoying a successful season
This past Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt was no
exception With the second period about half finished
Broun was sen! on a streak pattern which he ran to
perfection The play is designed to have Brown simply fly
by the defensive back and let the quarterback put the bail
in his arms for a score On Saturday the result was a
58-yard touchdown pass from Belue and the play made the
score 23-0.
' That pattern is about my favorite." Brown said. "It lets
me use my speed and quickness against the defense, and
that's what I like to do best.”
Brown certainly displays good speed on the field and has.
on occasion, used it off the football field for good success.
As a high school senior in laiurens, S C Brown won the
state title in the too meter dash with a time of 10.4 and also
the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.4
"I would like to run track here at Georgia." Brown
explained "But last spring I hurt my knee in spring drills.
I don't know if I'll be with football or track this spring
We'll just have to wait and see "
Brown has been satisfied with his play thus far. but he
realizes the need for improvement
"I've had some good games so far." he said, "but the
game that I’m looking forward to is the South Carolina
game Being from I^aurens, I was heavily recruited by
Carolina and Clemson But the way that Coach Carlin
traotod mo really left me with bad feelings about Carolina
You know that I'll be ready for that game ”
As far as the team's progress is concerned. Brown feels
like this team will make it to the Sugar Bowl
"We re improving with each game." he said "I felt from
the start that the Tennessee game was the key to our
season In that game we came out and won and we’ve just
gotten more confidence with each game "
"I’m happy that I came to Georgia." Brown said. "When
I made my official visit here something just hit me about
this place I've been real happy with the whole situation
here 1 just hope that I can keep improving with each game
this year and in the next two years "
That's the kind of attitude that will make Georgia fans
very happy

Hawks winning minus centers
ATIJVNTA (UPI)—Atlanta Coach Hubie
Brown says sensational performances by
Dan Roundfield and Eddie Johnson have
enabled the Hawks to get off to a fast start
this season despite the absence of their top
three centers
"I think that what you have seen is two
true all-star players, Roundfield and
Johnson, rising to the occasion and playing
absolutely magnificent basketball to lead
the team by example." said Brown.
The defending Central Division champs
have won four of their first five games
without 7 1 Tree Rollins and 7-2 Tom
Burleson, and played the last three without
6-9 Steve Hawes
With the regular centers out. much of the
rebounding load has fallen on the 6-9
Roundfield. who is leading the league in
rebounds (15.8) and blocked shots (3.6) and
averaging 20 8 points a game
Johnson has averaged 23.2 points a game
after a summer in which he was arrested
twice and underwent psychiatric treatment
in which he was diagnosed as a manic
depressive Officials say he has responded
to a daily treatment of lithium, but he still
faces charges of cocaine possession
"He has rebounded back to play
incredible basketball, considering the fact
that his future is still cloudy and he has
gone through tremendous mental and
physical turmoil this summer," said
Brown.
Brown says he is not surprised by the
Hawks’ start but admits it has taken
everybody on the team "stepping forward
and doing a great job in their roles.”
"Craig Shelton and Don Collins have
been nothing but sensational as rookies
making a heavy contribution during this
crisis,’’ said Brown. "We've also been
quite fortunate to get stellar play from
Sam Pellom at the starting center
position."
Ironically, Pellom and Shelton are
among three players whose jobs appear
most in jeopardy when Rollins and
Burleson return from the injured list.
Brown hopes to have Rollins, who had
off season knee surgery, back for Friday
night's game at Indiana and Burleson, who
is recovering from knee surgery and a
broken wrist, is expected back by
mid-November Hawes is also expected
back Friday from a back injury.
“It's going to be difficult because we are
going to have to cut people who are
making contributions." said Brown, who
must cut or trade two players to make
room for Rollins and Burleson.
Guard James McElroy is the other
player who would appear to be in
jeopardy, especially if Brown decides to go
with only four guards on the 11-man roster

Oh Henry!
Mike Henry
Vandy a good remedy
Nothing could have helped Georgia's football team
more than to play Vanderbilt last Saturday Several
Bulldogs showed the fan^what many have believed all
along.
Lindsay Scott, who incidentally had not been
misplaced in the four weeks between the Texas A&M
game and the Vandy contest, snagged four passes for 46
yards against the Commodores
"Man. we’ve got a good thing going." Scott
commented "We’ve got a great group of guys and this
team is going to make things happen "
Sound familiar?
Those are the same words spoken by Scott earlier this
season However, these comments were forever buried
in prior paragraphs which were filled with concern over
Georgia's passing attack
"Just give me a chance." he had said. This week he
got his chance and he produced Just one game, some
attention, a little confidence and Scott came through, as
he is capable of doing for the rest of the year
Matt Simon, remember him?
He’s back, and in a big way.
It took the junior running back from Statesboro just
one week to move all the way up to third string after
being reinstated on the varsity. Three weeks ago he
wasn't even at practice. For two more weeks he was on
the scout team running plays of upcoming opponents for
Georgia’s first-string defense
Last week he had his chance and he capitalized He is
now running behind only Heisman Herschel and
"Poochie" Norris, who was good for 150 yards two
weeks ago. Simon has moved ahead of several freshmen
whom he was earlier positioned behind.
Simon dove into the line on a fake from Jeff Paulk as
the quarterback swept around the Commodore defense
close to the goal line. Later he dove over the line and
into the end zone, but this time it counted Touchdown.
Matt Simon!
Joe Creamons. who has to be the closest thing the
Dogs have to the Atlanta Falcons' Billy Kyckman (a
modern-day Huck Finn), more or less decided that he
had been in the hospital with a blood problem long
enough He walked into the training room Wednesday
before practice and told the trainer to tape him up
The trainer wouldn't tape him. not realizing that
Creamons had been dismissed from Athens General
Hospital Creamons bega' the task himself before being
ordered out of the train ..g room
At practice Wednesday. Creamons beamed. "I'm
happy as heck." he said.
Saturday he made three tackles, recovered one
fumble and blocked a pass. Not bad for a man worrying
about his playing future just three days earlier
Even Scott Woerner is back, or so says Coach Dooley.
The defensive back had fallen from the grace of the
coaches and did not start the third game of the season
against Clemson
But that doesn't mean he did not play He returned an
interception 98 yards that day and scored a touchdown
on a punt return against the Tigers
Now. Dooley says, after the sixth game of the season.
"Scott Woerner is playing like an All-American is
supposed to play.”
The 1960 Bulldogs have heart—more heart than could
be imagined There’s not one player on the entire team
who wouldn't give his right ear for the national
