Bonnell: “I wanted to make myself more
marketable” for employment
By MELISSA WHITE
What makes Mike
McManus so different from
other University freshmen?
McManus is a second-quar
ter freshman at the Univer
sity. He’s a resident of
Athens and commutes to
classes. Like many fresh
men. he has not declared a
major yet, preferring like
many of his peers to take
basic core curriculum
courses, such as Spanish
101 and a special studies
math course.
But, McManus can't
really be stereotyped as a
typical college freshman.
McManus is 40 years old.
He is a "nontraditional stu
dent. a term used by col
lege educators and adminis
trators, nationwide, to de
scribe the steadily increas
ing sector of students who
are age 40 and over and
enrolled in college
Nontraditional college stu
dents are becoming more
and more common at the
University. Enrollment fig
ures indicate that from
Sept., 1979 through June.
1980, an average of 4,000
were enrolled at the Univer
sity each quarter This fig
ure indicates that 20 percent
of the student population at
the University last year was
over 40.
According to Nelle Scholz,
spokeswoman for the Non
traditional Student Group at
the University. McManus is
one of 330 undergraduate
male students over the age
of 28 enrolled at the Univer
sity this quarter. Other
figures provided by Scholz
indicate that there are also
60 male graduate students
over 28 enrolled this quar
ter
The exact number of non
traditional women students
presently enrolled at the
University could not be ob
tained, however, an approx
imation of newly enrolled
women over 26 is 1,327 for
uate and 424 graduate
female students, according
to Ernestine Copas, Univer
sity coordinator for the
Women s Opportunity Net
work.
This increasing percent
age of nontraditional stu
dents is not found exclusive
ly at the University U S.
Census Bureau statistics,
issued in August 1980 stated
that there were 914,000 fe
male and 487,000 male col
lege students age 35 or
older. Eighty-five percent
of these were part-time stu
dents. devoting their time to
job, family and college re
sponsibilities.
After all these years, why
are so many middle-aged or
older adults enrolling in
college? According to
Scholz, many older women
return to college or enroll
for the first time in order to
get an educational degree
that will help them find a
better job. “Many women
had their education inter
rupted when they got mar
ried or decided to have a
family,” Scholz said.
"Now, their children are
older, perhaps grown and
out on their own. These
women decide to return to
scholl and complete their
educations."
“Coming to school was
something I had always
wanted to do," McManus
said “But, I have only
recently gotten a good op
portunity to do it.” His
education is being paid for
through a Veterans’ Admin
istration education pro
gram.
“I had wanted to come to
college before, but since I
got married early. I didn't
get a chance until I became
divorced," Jeannie Laid-
man. 40, said Laidman is a
senior majoring in commun
ity health She hopes that
with her college degree she
paying job.
Gail Bonnell, 41, who is
studying for a doctorate in
sociology, returned to
school for two reasons. “I
wanted to make myself
more marketable in the em
ployment situation and I
think that a parent in school
is a good example for child
ren of the importance of an
education,” Bonnell said.
She is a mother of three
children, ages 9, 12, and 15,
.ind -he works part-time in
a sociology department
assistantship She plans
to teach college some day.
Older students experience
different problems than
those faced by recent high
school graduates Probably
the most difficult problem
they share is the demand of
college on their time and
energies and the compli
cations arising from trying
to balance their studies with
family and job respons
ibilities.
"For the younger stu
dents, college work is their
main responsibility and
should be a top priority in
their lives," McManus said
“But for us, the older
students, it takes a back
seat to our families and
jobs. We have to take those
responsibilities first, then
devote what time we have
left to school."
Laidman said, “When you
have a child sick, you have
to stay home and look after
him This can cause you to
get behing with your class
work."
"There are just not
enough hours in the day,"
Bonnell said. "I spend four
evenings each week car-
pooling my children to boy
scouts, karate class or other
activities. I don’t have
much time to call my own."
Another problem faced by
many older students is the
difficulty of financing their
college educations. “Most
of the older students still
have to support their fam
ilies and earn an income,”
McManus said "It gets
more difficult when you’re
trying to meet family ex
penses and pay school
tuition, too. I'm lucky,
because my education is
paid for but, there are lot of
people who can’t go to
school because they have
families to support "
For Laidman, finances
have been "touch and go ”
She said, “When you're try
ing to run a household and
pay school expenses on a
budget, you tend to run over
from one month to the
next " Laidman has two
children and she works
weekends as a nurse
Bonnell said, ”1 am
fortunate, because I have
child support payments to
help with family expenses
But many of us are involved
with assistantships that are
only authorized for nine-
month periods, so even
though we would like to go
to school in the summer, we
can't because we are unable
to afford it."
Older students sometimes
have problems dealing with
teaching concepts, such as
the “new" math and ever-
changing language gram
mar These concepts have
changed considerably since
the older students grad
uated from high school.
New math and other
fairly recent educational
techniques are common
fears held by many of the
nontraditional students,”
Scholz said
"I voluntarily took special
studies math because it had
been 20 years since I had
taken algebra and I felt
more comfortable going into
the special studies class,
using it for a refresher
course," said Laidman
"We have totally diflcn nl
academia now," Bonnell
said. "In graduate school,
you may have to audit
under graduate courses in
addition to carrying a full
load in graduate school."
Accoring to Me Manus,
college is a different ex
perience for the young stu
dents than for the older
ones “College is not just a
learning experience, it is a
living experience." he said.
“The younger students are
here not just to study, but to
live away from home and
learn how to get along with
other people On the other
hand, most of the older
people are here primarily to
get a degree so they can
have better jobs."
Many nontraditional stu
dents do not seem to miss
being left out of the social
life of the campus organ
izations which are aimed
primarily at the younger or
traditional students
McManus, who is married
to a University employee,
said that most of the older
students he knows have
their own friends and in
terests and don't feel ex
cluded from campus
activities. On the other
hand Bonnell said, “Were
too old to be included in
social activities provided
for younger students, but
we're not really on the
same social level as the
faculty members So
really, where do we belong 9
There needs to be a sound
ing board where older
students can get together
and talk about the problems
facing them," she said
“I have had no problems
with other students or with
faculty members, in fact,
most faculty members will
go all out to help you if you
ask them," McManus said.
"Most of the professors I
have had have been pretty
understanding when you
have to be absent from
class for family reasons"
Laidman said
"I’ve been lucky in that
I’ve been able to establish
rapport with my profes
sors,” Bonnell said “But,
if you work hard, you
shouldn't have any prob
lems with most instructors
Teachers are more recep
tive to those who show more
interest and ability."
The University is offering
several programs and or
ganizations to encourage en
rollment of even more older
students The Women’s Op
portunity Network 'WON)
Office of Student Activities,
held a special orientation in
September for older women
who have had little or no
college experience or who
are returning to campus
after their educations were
interrupted The program
provided information on ad
visement, campus services
and programs. WON has
also sponsored workshops
for older students to help
them deal with stress and
depression.
Another group designed to
help the older students is
the Nontraditional Student
Group. This program is an
informal organization that
holds regular meetings in
Clark Howell Hall
