Despite records, Woerner a team man

Woerner heads for another punt return
Perhaps one of Scott Woerner’s most distinguishing
characteristics is his enthusiasm regarding team work
despite personal records of his own.
Establishing a new Georgia career record for yardage
gained on punt returns is but one of numerous accomplish
ments of the All-SEC corner back
Woerner’s record-breaking mark of 976 yards (with 51
yards gained against Vandy), exceeded former Bulldog
Buzzy Rosenberg s record by 30 yards.
Currently, the senior from Jonesboro is leading the SEC
in punt returns, and is third in the nation with a 16 8 yard
average Woerner also has eleven interceptions in his four
years, with three interceptions this season.
The All-Ainerican hopeful, with five games remaining in
the season, has already bettered his return averages from
last year
His 16 8 yard punt return average has practically doubled
from the 9.1 yard average he boasted in 1979. His six
kickoffs for 141 yards <23 5 yard avg.) places Woerner
ahead of last year’s 20-yard average.
Woerner gives much of the credit for his successful
returns to the defensive linemen.
"We have much better defense this year,” he said.
“What they do makes it a lot easier for me."
Head Coach Vince Dooley agreed "The punt return
team feels that the fact that Scott has done so well is
reward enough for their efforts ’’
But Dooley knows that the defense alone does not account
for Woerner’s exceptional ability in the Bulldog secondary
"Scott is a very talented athlete, and he is undoubtedly
playing to his capabilities." Dooley said "He's been
injured in the past, but for the first time, he’s having the
opportunity to really practice."
Knee may keep Nall out for season

A vital cog in the Georgia
offensive line will be out of
the lineup for the next few
weeks and perhaps the bal
ance of the season.
Hugh Nall, Georgia's
starting center, went down
in Wednesday’s practice
with a knee injury and will
lx* sidelined at least until
the Georgia Tech game.
Apparently, the injury is
a sprained knee, according
to Bulldog trainer Warren
Morris.
Nall, who had been
named as one of Georgia's
captains for Saturday
night's battle with Kentucky
in Lexington, will be spelled
by sophomore Wayne Rad
loff
"We may have lost
Hugh," Dooley said "He
might have been our best
blocker as far as consisten
cy is concerned and he’s
been a great leader We
haven't received the final
report yet, but it doesn’t
look good."
Sophomore Joe Happe

came to Georgia as a line

lettered as a freshman on
the varsity team as an

Radloff, a 6-5. ‘230-pounder

to an injury
When the Bulldogs line up

running backs Ronnie Stew

Woerner has been practicing very efficiently according to
Dooley "He knows what the team does, what he needs to

Woerner is definitely a "team man" Dooley said of the

Determination, especially by the seniors on the team,
could explain the Dogs improved record this year.
Woerner said
‘ Those of us who have been here since we were
freshmen know what it takes, he said "We really want to
win and we're working hard together "
senior "He’s greatly concerned with how well the defense
does, and he feels that his accomplishments are due to
their skill."
Secondary Coach Bill Lewis said that Woerner "really
cares about Georgia's winning He's always willing to
work hard to get that goal '
Lewis added that Woerner was serious about his job and
about winning.
Spending four years at Georgia has been enjoyable for
Woerner, who said there were "no drawbacks whatsoever"
from his decision to come to Georgia
Looking to a future of professional football is not a major
concern for Woerner at present His career exists only in
aiding the Dogs in their battle for the SEC title
“Everything I do now is immaterial if we don't win the
SEC,” he said
And with Scott Woerner leading the Bulldog secondary,
Georgia's outlook seems bright
