Dental clinic booked up until Oct. 30
By PAUL PENDERGRASS
Staff writer
If you want an appoint
ment at the new University
Health Services dental clin
ic, you might have to wait a
while. Students are booked
up until Oct. 30 for
checkups, according to Dr.
George Pirie, dentist at the
new clinic
"Were fully operational
now," Pirie said On Oct.
15. the first day the clinic
was open, seven patients
were treated Pirie expects
to treat an average of eight
a day
Warren Loar. assistant
administrator at the Health
Center, said “anywhere
from 300 to 400 people"
have signed up for the
service, and he expects
even more students to
purchase subscriptions after
the program is promoted
around campus
ATLANTA (UPI)-Form-
er President Ford accused
President Carter of "pure
unadulterated dem
agoguery" in depicting Ron
ald Reagan as a warmonger
Monday and warned that
any "secret deal" to free
the hostages from Iran
might backfire on Carter in
the final days of the race
At a fund-raising recep
tion for Republican senate
candidate Mack Mattingly,
"There are a great
number of people who don’t
realize we have an oper
ational program here,"
I*oar said The clinic will
be promoted through bus
and newspaper advertise
ments.
Loar expects 25 to 30
percent of the student
population to be enrolled in
the program by the end of
the year
For a charge of $20 a
year, the program offers an
annual teeth cleaning and
fluoride treatment, an
examination complete with
X-rays, dental service at a
reduced rate and instruct
ions on brushing and
flossing
A check-up at the clinic
consists of five steps
First, the patient is
required to watch a video
cassette on brushing and
flossing, and is given
instructions for correct
and later at a news con
ference following his speech
to the National Paint and
Coating Association, Ford
said he would advise
Reagan to hit hard at
Carter's economic record in
their debate Tuesday night.
After leaving Atlanta,
Ford headed for a working
luncheon with the GOP
nominee to discuss debate
tactics.
brushing and flossing
Pirie then takes a pana
graph X-ray, a new system
that photographs all of the
patients teeth in a single
X-ray.
Next, a dental chart is
made, and Pirie gives his
diagnosis about the
patient's dental condition
Finally, the patient’s
teeth are cleaned and given
a fluoride treatment
Pirie and a hygienist,
Gloria Guest, are the only
employees at the new clinic
Because of the small staff,
Pirie said, "We re limited
in the amount of dentistry
we can do.”
The clinic is equipped to
treat such problems as
fillings and extractions, but
Pirie said, "Our emphasis
will be on preventive
dentistry.”
He called the facility an
"oral health and hygiene
clinic.”
While the clinic has all
the equipment that a local
dentist might have, he said
most students with serious
dental problems will be
referred to local dentists
"We are supported by the
dental society here in
Athens," Loar said. "We’re
not trying to take business
away from them.”
"They (the local dentists)
have encouraged us and
given us advice," he said.
"We have a good rapport
with them."
The clinic will use a
different dentist each month

Poll shows lead
for Mattingly
ATLANTA* UPI i-Sen Her
man Talmadge, D-Ga . says
he can best represent
Georgia because his chal
lenger has no record, but
Republican candidate Mack
Mattingly says a telephone
poll shows he will defeat the
incumbent Nov. 4.
Both candidates got in
some campaigning Monday.
Mattingly had help from
former President Gerald
Ford in Atlanta and Tal
madge stumped in Thomas-
ton.
Mattingly's uphill battle
got a $15,000 boost at a
breakfast featuring Ford
who told about 60 Republi
cans who paid $250 each to
attend the reception that
CARTER
Reagan will need a GOP
majority in at least one
chamber of Congress,
adding that "we have a
chance of gaining control of
the Senate.”
Mattingly, citing a tele
phone poll of 800 Georgians
statewide last week, told
supporters he and Tal
madge were in a dead heat
during the survey period.
He confidently predicted he
has overtaken the Senate
Agriculture Committee
chairman since the poll was
completed.
“We’ve been campaigning
for 18 months and we're
sending a new United states
senator to Washington from
Georgia," he said
from p.l

arate education depart
ment, headed up by a
cabinet-level secretary
ERA AND ABORTION:
Carter is committed to the
passage of the Equal Rights
Amendment. He has
worked during the last four
years to get the amendment
ratified. He has said he will
continue his efforts on
behalf of ERA if he is
re-elected.
Carter, due to his relig
ious convictions, is person
ally opposed to abortion.
But as president, he has
taken the stance that the
decision on abortion should
be left up to the individual,
free of any government
interference.
PREDICTIONS
The race between Carter
and Reagan is too close to
call on the national level.
Any major accomplishment
or gaffe by either candidate
could change the election at
this point.
Carter is favored, ob
viously, to win the 12
electoral votes at stake in
his home state of Georgia
During the last election.
Carter received over 65
percent of the votes in
Georgia He will be lucky
to do that well this year.
