Volleyballers split matches
By JACKIF CROSBY
Staff writer
The Georgia women's
volleyball team continues
bettering its record as the
Lady Bulldogs took on West
Georgia College and Jack
sonville State last W'ednes
day at West Georgia Col
lege
The Dogs swept past West
Georgia with a 15-10. 15-8
win in the match.
Coach Sid Feldman had
anticipated a stronger at
tack from the team, but was
pleased with such an easy
victory.
"West Georgia was defi
nitely not as disciplined as 1
had expected,” he said. "I
was surprised that there
was not a stronger come-on
by them."
In the second match of
the evening, the women
again showed their
strength This
Alabama's Jacksonville
State with a 15-10, 15-3 win
for Georgia.
"Jacksonville has a fine
defense, but no height at
all,” Feldman said "We
simply beat them at the
net."
This past weekend Geor
gia traveled to Cookeville.
Tenn. in a four-team
tournament against East
Tennessee. Tennessee Tech,
and the University of
Tennessee at Martin
Plans for a 2-1 finishing
score were hampered by
unexpected Georgia illness
es and injuries while in
Tennessee.
Bulldog Becky Mclver
came down with a stomach
virus the morning before
the match against East
Tennessee, and Mary Tar-
buck was out for the rest of
the match because her knee
popped out of joint. Because
of an earlier re-injury of a
stress fracture, Mary Tar-
buck was also off the court.
"East Tennessee has al
ways had a decidedly better
team," said Feldman “But
with three starters on the
bench, we had a hard time
disciplining our club
The women were defeated
in three of the five games
with match scores of 915.
15-4, 11-15, 15-9 and 12-15.
In their next match, the
Dogs again met a stiff
challenger, and dropped to
Tennessee Tech 10-15, 4-15,
15-7
"Originally this had been
the one tough match that we
were expecting " Feldman
said.
As if the women hadn't
had enough bad luck
already, in the final match
of the weekend Bulldog
Joan Benson also caught a
stomach virus and was
unable to compete in the
remaining match
"With literally six players
out. we were only playing
with two starters and four
subs,” Feldman said.
But the Dogs were able to
beat Tennessee. Martin in
spite of the injuries. Win
ning three games of five,
the women recorded a 15-13,
10-15, 154), 10-14 and 15 8
win.
"I think the girls were
disappointed,” Feldman
said. "But we’ve got to take
all these facts."
And despite problems in
Tennessee, the women still
show an impressive 21-6
record.

Forest Hills no

Invitational Tournament this past weekend in Augusta, and
out of 15 teams entered, the men from Athens finished
second behind a solid Georgia Southern team

overall score of 221. Bulldog Seth Knight followed Cook by
one stroke at 222.
Madden Hatcher fired a 226, Jack Larkin a 229 and
Wright Waddell a 230.
Kentucky’s Jim Valpenhelm was low medalist for the
weekend, shooting a one under par 215 on the difficult
Forest Hills course
Following Valpenhelm was Georgia Southern's Trip
Kuhlke with a 217. Kay Barr of Houston with a 219 and Stu
Ingraham of East Tennessee State with a 221
Georgia coach Dick Copas was not altogether pleased
with his squad's performance "Our players were
disappointed with their results. We just didn't play well
enough to wir.," Copas said.
Copas said he felt his team was not playing up to its
potential "We have a talented team this year We |u-i
need to put it all together "
