G-Day football game caps off annual alumni gathering this weekend

University alumni return to gather with old friends and
relive their college days for the annual Alumni Weekend
April 24 to 26
The weekend features various awards banquets, meetings,
class reunions and the traditional G-Day football game. The
events, organized by the Georgia Alumni Society, are ex
pected to draw 400-500 University graduates.
Class reunions are scheduled to meet Friday, April 24.
Classes having reunions are: 1921, 1922, 1923, 1925, 1926 and
1931, all meeting at the Georgia Center for Continuing
Education. The Classes of 1936,1941,1951 and 1956 will meet
at the Holiday Inn.
The Class of 1931, which holds its 50th reunion, and the
Class of 1956, which holds its 25th reunion, will receive
special attention
Other events Friday include an alumni cocktail party at
the Athens Country Club from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m., a meeting of
black alumni and meetings for the alumni of the Business
and Journalism schools.
The Black Alumni Association will host its third Annual
Achievement Banquet at 7:30 p m at the Holiday Inn Two
outstanding black students will be honored — Carole N.
Jackson, an honor student majoring in journalism and Nat L.
Hudson, a member of the 1980 Georgia football team The
guest speaker is Atlanta soprano singer Zelda Kennedy.
The College of Business Administration will present their
Distinguished Alumni Awards at a luncheon at 12:30 p.m.
Friday, in the banquet room of the Georgia Center. U S. Rep.
Doug Barnard is the scheduled speaker. Tickets are $6.50 per
person and may be reserved by contacting Donna Martin in
Brooks Hall
Alumni of the School of Journalism and Mass Com
munication will hold an awards dinner Friday at 8 p.m at the
Athens Country Club A cash bar reception at 6:45 p.m will
precede the dinner Tickets, at $11 per person, are available
from Dean Scott Cutlip in the Journalism School.
The Journalism School Alumni Association will present
their Outstanding Alumnus Award to Frank N. Hawkins,
retired editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and a jour
nalism instructor, for his contributions to journalism
throughout his 44-year career
W. H. "Dink" NeSmith of Jesup, president of Press-
Sentinel Newspapers, will receive the John E. Drewry Award
for Distinguished Achievement in Journalism.
Four people retiring from the journalism school this year
will also be honored at the dinner The retirees are: Frazier
Moore, professor and head of the advertising-public relations
sequence: William S. Baxter, professoi: Marcus Bartlett,
visiting professor in the radio-television sequence; and
Robert Crow, business manager and placement coordinator
Saturday's activities will start with an alumni loyalty
breakfast for graduates of the classes of 1900 through 1931, in
Snelling Hall’s Georgia Room from 8 to 9:15 a m
The Alumni Society’s Annual Meeting will be held in the
auditorium of the Georgia Center from 9:45 a m to noon
After all of these activities the alumni will gear up for the
big event of the weekend — the G-Day football game, which
kicks off at 2 p m
So that they won’t arrive too hungry to cheer, the Alumni
Society will hold a G-Day Buffet from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the
main banquet area of the Georgia Center.
