Beethoven may roll over in
his grave, but the UGA
Singers — a new vocal
ensemble — are doing con
temporary music in a
classical music department,
so far the group has only
taken a few small steps, but
the University community
can expect tremendous leaps
from them in the future.
The group presents
popular music and gives
students the opportunity to
perform for audiences out
side the music department.
“We do pop music, Broad
way and contemporary
music,” said Sharon
Phillips, a member of the
group. The UGA Singers per
form songs such as
"Georgia” and "Alex
ander's Ragtime Band.”
The UGA Singers’ main
purpose is doing public rela
tions for the music depart
ment around the state and in
the Athens community,
Phillips said. She added the
group "also gives people
who want this type of ex
perience a chance to do it.”
"For a long time students
have been wanting to do
something like this because
the only opportunities we
group rehearse completely
on their own time, he said.
"Finding an appropriate
time to rehearse" is the ma
jor problem facing the group
now, Arant said.

Music students must par
ticipate in various other
ensembles, such as the glee
clubs and opera workshops,
and coordinating their time
around this group causes
some difficulties, Arant said.
"But quite a bit has been
done," he said.
A few of the UGA
have to do anything other
than classical music are
through theatre," she said
and “a lot of our interests lie
in Broadway and things like
that.”

Good news for those
threatened by bee stings
By BRIAN MOTTAZ
I'nltrd Press International
SPOKANE, Wash. — Little known fact: More people die
each year from bee stings in the United States than from any
other venomous animal, including rattlesnakes.
As many as two million people in this country alone are
susceptible to serious allergic reactions from the stings of
bees, wasps, hornets and yellow jackets, and more than 50 of
them die each year as a result.
But the Spokane-based Hollister-Stier Laboratory feels it
has scored a breakthrough in the treatment of such allergic
reactions with the development of a series of "hymenoptera"
venoms, referring to the group of insects from which they are
derived.
