The Red and Black
Fage5
is the live chance Magazine’s been waiting for
Founded by former Buzzcock Howard Devoto— Magazine
By LAURIE ESTERHKOOK
Red >1111 Black Su(( Writer
The members of the band
have close-cropped hair and
steely, penetrating eyes,
challenging one to look
deeper into their music. The
album cover dimly depicts
them at rehearsal, but in
stead of discouraging, it in
vites one to sit in on that
rehearsal and listen ot the
moods of Magazine.
Founded by former Buzz-
cocks member Howard
Devoto, Magazine has
recorded three previous
albums; their first, “Real
Life," received enormous
praise while the second,
“Secondhand Daylight,”
was critically torn apart
"Play" by Magazine is an
I.R.S. Records release.
“The Correct Use of
Soap,"released in May 1980,
was a radical departure for
the band and they followed it
with a tour that ended in
Australia and the recording
of the live album "Play ."
It is this live effort that
gives Magazine the chance
they've been waiting for to
break into the ranks of
notable arty punk bands. It
all comes together on that
night and on this album; the
audience is obviously
mesmerized by the per
formance, for it makes no
sound except to scream and
applaud at the ends of songs
Dave Formula’s keyboards
are less than energetically
inspired, complemented by
Devoto’s staccato vocals.
Robin Simon’s guitar, too,
can be both whining and
forceful depending on the
tone set by Devoto and For
mula.
The diversity found in th e
music and the lyrics is an in
dication that all the band
members contribute to the
material on this album,
sometimes a song is compos
ed by only two of them, and
other times all five have col
laborated on a song; “Play”
is a summation of all their
talents and proves they have
strength as a group.
The first half of the album
is more rock in style, with
tight chords and evident
themes. “Give Me
Everything” and “A Song
from Under the Floor
boards” begin “Play” with a
fervor that lapses into “Per
mafrost,” a song that
creates a frozen time warp
image and is rather
pleasantly eerie. Devoto
makes a tongue-in-cheek
comment about the “real
moral fiber” of “Model
Worker” a song that deals
with the dissatisfaction of a
British factory worker
Although it is not nearly as
political as the Clash's work,
it does make a statement
about the boredom and
unhappiness people will en
dure to achieve security and
the sadness of the whole
situation
It is on the second half of
“Play” that Magazine stops
performing and starts ex
isting on the stage Although
they were not restricted
before, they were more con
trolled, but as side two pro
gressed they became more
at ease and more im
aginative. Formula is ab
solutely outstanding, his
playing frenzied in the rush
of energy he displays.
"Parade" is somewhat
rueful as Devoto
sings,“Sometimes 1 forget
that we are supposed to be in
love” but calmer in “Thank
You (Falettinme Be Mice
Elf Agin).”
Written by the entire band.
“Because You’re Frighten
ing” lets loose with the force
of combined strength It is
paradoxically frightening
and exciting like a
thunderstorm, its power lur
ing one to keep on listening
“Twenty Years Ago”
winds down a little bit,
though it too takes off on
musical tangents with ex-
pressiv , „„rcastic lyrics
floating in and out of the
guitar riffs. “Definitive
Gaze” is a whirlwind ending
to a very gusty record. Con
cluding the song, Devoto
simply says, “Thank you,
goodbye" and “Play” comes
to an end. But Magazine has
many more nights of “Play”
left in them Instead of a
goodbye, they deserve an en
trance into the niche reserv
ed for exceptional punk rock
bands.
Scene: Blitz
Spandau Ballet won’t excite crowd
Murderers might never make it to the courtroom
By MARK THOMAS
B«a and Black SUII Writer
The scene is London. Night
envelops the streets and all
the inhabitants. The clubs
will be opening soon and
there are those who have
longed the entire day for just
this moment . They slip on
their chic attire. Applying
make-up to their faces, men
and women alike, they
prepare for an evening of
sound and movement.
Leaving from all corners
of London, they move toward
their destination. Some
leave on foot, some riding
the tubes and others by
limousine. These persons
make up the Blitz movement
and they are going out danc
ing.
“Journeys to Glory” by
Spandau Ballet is a
Chrysalis Records release.
Blitz bands that emerge in
London know their careers
can be made or destroyed at
the whim of those who fre
quent the clubs. The au
dience is both judge and
jury. And this is what Span
dau Ballet, one of England's
biggest Blitz bands, — a trial
that has already found them
guilty
Imagine, if you will, we
are at the most celebrated of
Blitz clubs — The Blitz Club
itself. Visage, another Blitz
band, and Spandau Ballet
are scheduled to perform for
the waiting crowd
Visage, headed by Steve
Strange, climbs to the stage
The audience waits behind
smoke screens and shadows,
all the time judging.
The ultra-fashionable
clientele of young taste-
makers, hairdressers,
tion themselves on the tiles.
Madly, but with elegance,
they dance. They are won
over
Suddenly we move to inter
mission Again the crowd
waits. This time Spandau
Ballet climbs onto the stage.
Spandau Ballet gets lost on "Journey to Glory”
Before this night. Spandau
Ballet decided they would
play all the cuts off their
debut album, "Journeys to
Glory " This ploy is the only
true test They begin big
with “To Cut a I xing Story
fashion designers, writers
and graphic artists are not
easily won over Strange
gives the cue and the music
begins The crowd swarms
on the dance floor Using
hands and elbows, they posi
Short,” a song so strong it
must be stopmed to, not
danced.
They rip out "Reforma
tion,” “Mandolin" and
“Muscle Man." The band
takes a moment to search
the dance floor. It is empty
It has been since the latter
half of "Reformation "
Those that make up the
Blitz know the reason This
crowd so desperately sear
ching for the very best from
rock and disco was bored.
Spandau Ballet possessed
none of the sophistication
and rawness of Visage
Spandau came across like,
yes, a ballet — graceful, but
every move rehearsed and
calculated.
Like Spandau Ballet's
hypothetical performance,
their “Journey to Glory" at
its best is unfulfilling At its
worse its downright boring.
Each of the eight cuts are
driven by a mundane, inces
sant pounding that renders
each song indistinguishable
But the most mundane of all
sounds is spewed from the
mouth of lead singer Tony
Hanley All lyrics are
hopelessly waxed over by
Hanley’s stiff operatic howl
ing. Ever try to pogo to
“Carmen"?
Blitz is a definite alter
native among today's
musical style However,
Spandau Ballet is an injec
tion of morphine into the
veins of the Blitz movement
Let’s hope this isn’t a fatal
overdose.

“The bottom line is when you prosecute someone, you have
to have a case," the investigator said. “You have to prove
beyond reasonable doubt they (the victims) were murdered
All they know is they were probably asphyxiated. ”
Meanwhile, police issued a general alarm for a black deaf
