TRACES OF POP SENSIBILITY
Numbers show Brains, Police influence
From Atlanta — the Number?
By JAY WATSON
Knl and Black Sull Writer
1 have to give the Numbers
a pat on the back for
releasing an extended play
record. As strong as the
temptation is for new bands
to get established by getting
a debut album out fast, LP's
contain plenty of room for
musical error in the form of
useless filler material.
But an extended play
allows a band to present its
strongest material and leave
it at that before any creative
breakdown may occur
The Numbers sound a lot
like another Atlanta band,
the Brains, minus Tom
Gray’s lyrical intelligence
and synthesizer versatility.
But this sameness aside,
"The Numbers" contains
some traces of pop sen
sibility.
The two versions of
“Wanting You" offered here
owe a lot to the big reggae
beat of the Police, ear
marked by Frank Schaefer's
free-roaming bass line and
Chris Edmonds' layers of
phased guitar. “You Don't
Have To Be Alone” brings to
mind a marriage of the
Brains' “Little Girl Gone”
with the vocal work of the
Police's Sting.
“Tell Her” starts with an
almost letter-perfect ape of
the Cars' “Let’s Go" before
David Castle delivers an
effectively smooth vocal
over strident rhythm guitar

and a commendably full
drum mix. "Pauline" is the
record’s most immediately
catchy track, with Hays
Hall s big beat on the tom
toms urging along a hoarse
guitar backing and three-
part harmony chorus. As
everywhere on the album,
the guitar solo makes its
point and gets out free of
excess.
All in all, the Numbers
won't take Georgia and the
world by storm, but they
won’t shame us, either. They
certainly seem to know their
limitations, and who knows
what surprises lurk in a live
show? If this succinct
collection of songs is an
indication of the band’s
future, keep an open mind.

Lindley’s long-awaited solo
album, a technical flop
For any of you who don’t
know David Lindley, he is
best known as Jackson
Browne’s right-hand man.
Lindley produced and toured
for Browne's “Hold Out"
album and has worked with
such artists as James
Taylor, Warren Zevon and
Ry Cooder. His most
familiar achievement is the

version of "Stay.” As you
can see, it is not Lindley’s
talent which is in question,
but his use of that talent
toward the newer, less ac
cepted reggae style.
In a press release, Lindley
proposes: "The idea that
reggae is just for people in
Jamaica doesn't apply
anymore. People are how
actually opening up and
accepting music as music,
and that's a big. big step," If
this is true, then maybe
Lindley is a musician ahead
of his time, because the only
tracks on “El Rayo-X" that
make it are the ones that
lean toward rock and roll.
For instance, "Mercury
Blues," a remake of the
rock-and-roll classic by K.C.
Douglas, is highlighted by
Lindley's unique vocals and
racing slide guitar.
Lindley is an extremely
talented musician, but there
are signs that “El Rayo-X”
should hve been left on the
back burner. Six of the 12
tracks are reworked golden
oldies (“Bye, Bye Love,"
"Twist and Shout") and only

Lindley apparently had to
struggle to construct "El
Rayo-X." He has admitted
his fans have been crying for
a solo album for a long time.
Maybe David Lindley
should have stopped
listening to his fans and
stuck to studying his music
"El Rayo-X" is not worthy of
him.
