After Hours
ON CAMPUS
May 8. Karen Sigers at the
Chapel, 8 p.m. Among other
things, she will play the
"Trout Quintet,” Franz
Schubert's salute to musical
fish May 9 The University
Pershing rifle company Q~t
presents the Second Annual
Bulldog Invitational High
School Precision Rifle Drill
meet at the Coliseum, Or "I
was a teenage gun freak,”
May II. Harvey Jeffery
Stokes, oboeist, at the
Chapel, 7 p.m. May II.
Carlos Corma, pianist,
Theodore Jahn, clarinetist
and Eugene Eicher, cellist at
the Chapel 8:30 p.m. A
concert of early Beethoven
music. May 12. North
Carolina Dance Theatre at
the Fine Arts Theatre
Dance this mess around.
May 12. Joseph M Hokayem

8:30p.m.
MOVIES ON CAMPUS
May 8-9 “The Stunt
Man." For my money, the
best film of last year, this
film raises the question
"What is reality?” and then
plays it for laughs. At
midnight “The Beatles at
Shea Stadium” will run. If
you can hear the music over
the screams of teenage lust,
you’ve got good hearing
May 10. Student film
festival. Judging by past
festivals, the films will
range from the experimental
to the hilarious and will
usually have elements of
both. May 11: "Stolen
Kisses,” Francois Truffaut’s
study of a vicious love
triangle. May 12. “Othello.”
Director Orson Welles is a
cinematic genius. He is also
an overblown windbag. He
could go either way on this
one. May 13: “Two Tars,"
and "The General.” Two
films by the master
comedian, Buster Keaton
May 14: “Rude Boy." The
Clash, the world's greatest
rock and roll band (there, I
said it and I’m glad) in
concert. So who needs a
plot?
MOVIES IN TOWN
Beechwood: "The Post
man Always Rings Twice.”
James M. Cain’s steamy
1937 novel made even more
sordid in its second movie
version A double feature of
“Alice in Wonderland" and
"Amy.” "Alice” has great
animation, although you
should read the book first
“Amy” sounds like one of
those cloying, contrived
“inspirational” films the
Disney people do so well.
Classic: “Screamers.”
The story of people turned
inside out but still alive,
Which is more than one can
say of the movie.
“Together, ” The ads for this
say “You’ve never seen
Jackie Bisset so shocking!"
Apparently they’ve never
seen “The Last Tycoon."
"Stir Crazy.” The most
popular movie of the year
Why?
Palace: "Caveman.”
Barbara Bach and Hingo
Starr utilize visual talents in
this zany story that explores
the problem of dog poop in
proportion to dinosaurs.
"Friday the 13th, Part 2."
The second part of the
"thriller” that dared to rip
off every horror film of the
decade. More screams than
the first.
Georgia Square: “The
Jazz Singer.” If "Love on the
Rocks” and "Hello Again”
qualify as jazz, then Barry
Manilow must be a bebop
artist. A double feature of
"Caddyshack" and "10."
“10," despite its reputation,
is actually a very witty and
touching film. As for
“Caddyshack,” the less said,
the better “Excalibur." The
Arthurian legend becomes a
work showing the potential
of cinema. “Nighthawks,” A
powerful thriller,
AROUND TOWN
Tyrone's — May 8-9: The
Randall Bramblett Band.
One of the South's best
musicians getting it all out
May 11: the Convalescent
Egyptians. At times this
group sounds like a parody
of Pylon, but not so much
you can't dance to them.
May 13. Pylon. The real
thing and as good a band as
you will find anywhere. May
13. The JoJa Band. May IS
IS Phil and the Blanks.
Good times anlenty.
Speakeasy — May 8 and 9.
Tim Bays. In case you
haven't heard, Bays is one of
the true originals on the
folkie scene, not to mention
the only acoustic guitar
player who ever opened for
Lynyrd Skynyrd. See in
terview, page 1. May 12: Doc
Watson Sorry Taj, sorry
Richie, but this is the finest
folk guitar player around.
May 13-14. Mike Cross. No
real surprises, just the same
easy, intelligent and fun
music he's played for years
Last Resort — May 8-9
Bill Schultz and Friends I
guess you can call this a
hootenany. May 12 Sunbelt
Millionaires. These guys
could be Atlanta’s version of
the Doobie Brothers. That is
not a compliment. May 13.
Poet’s comer Wow, how
bohemian. Be ready to bare
your soul and drink beer
40 Watt Club E. - May 8.
Pillars of Talent. A very
good group.
THE LAST PART
The After Hours "Win a
Rhythm Butlers Album
Contest” has so far netted
zero, count 'em, zero
responses. Again I am ex
tending it one week. Simply
tell me how long I have been
doing this thankless job and
you win. Send entries and
information to After Hours,

Suppose a man watches
the home he loves slowly
rotting away for want of
material comforts.
Suddenly an opportunity
appears for prosperity,
renewed beyond his most
desperate hope, a chance for
both his town and his family
to gain instant wealth
The only condition? He
must commit an abhorrent
act against a fellow human,
"The Visit" poses such a
situation The University
Theatre's fine opening night
performance of this tragi
comedy by Friedrich
Durrenmatt depicted the
destitute town of Gullen
somewhere in Central
Europe not so long ago
The town’s only hope is
Claire Zachanassian,
superbly portrayed by
Denise D'Agostino, who
after many years absence,
returns to Gullen as the

and Michael Yoder, runs

night and a 2:30 p.m. show

wealthiest woman in the
world.
Her former lover, Anton
Schill, played by Michael
Yoder, surfaces to win her
over to the town.
D'Agostino is a
magnificent Claire. She
depicts this monstrous
woman in her bitter
determination, her
knowledge that she has
power over everyone
through her wealth.
Yoder also gives a prime
performance, fortunately he
also has the chance to
display his strong singing
voice. For the most part, the
townspeople do well in
developing their collective
blindness to their own guilt
as they gradually come to
see condemning Schill as
just.
Part of this play's
significance derives from
the audience becoming part
of the town of Gullen, an
integration emphasized well
by director Stanley
Longman. In different
scenes, particularly the town
council meeting at the end,
the entire theatre lights up
