Balloons help realize
dream of Athens couple
By WILSON HAWTHORNE
Hrdand Mark Staff Writer
The dream of self-employment has come
true for an Athens couple, who say they are
having a “blast" being their own bosses.
Jeff and Jane Wilks. Athenians for more
than 10 years, started looking for ways to
become self-employed last summer
They discovered their route to success
when they spotted an advertisement about
balloons in a national publication
After some investigation into the costs and
technical problems a ballooning business
would involve, Jeff and Jane knew the life of
"balloonatics" was for them
Up-N-Away, their company's official
name, sells balloons in two ways: one balloon
at a time at fairs and festivals, or in a 20-
balloon bouquet clown-delivered with a
message
Jane, an ex-secretary and bookkeeper, and
Jeff, a former restaurant manager, first
began enjoying their new occupation only in
their spare time When Up-N-Away got off
the ground, they quit their jobs
Since then, they say they've learned that
ballooning can produce some pretty crazy
experiences
Jeff, who dresses up like a circus clown,
said one time "a guy walked up and said
'Where did you get them there floatin'
balloons at? They never do float when I blow
'em up.'"
The man at the fair had never heard of
helium.
Jane, in charge of making balloon
bouquets, answering the telephone and
keeping company records, said Jeff has
ballooned many homes, restaurants, bars
and even an intensive care unit at a local
hospital.
Up-N-Away also has a "Gorillagram"
service, she said, which involves a gorilla
look-alike delivering a bunch of bananas with
a message attached.
Jeff makes his entrance by asking the
unsuspecting recipient, "have you ever been
ballooned?" while sporting a huge grin.
Then, he said he acts spontaneously,
depending on the setting, and leaves, saying.
"This clown has got to go do some more
clowning around! ”
But his work is not without a heart
touching side, in addition to the laughs.
Jeff once delivered a bouquet to a retarded
boy who had been sick for days. The boy's
mother had tried everything to cheer her son
up, but nothing worked. When the boy saw
"Mr. Clown" bringing him a bunch of
balloons, his face lit up and he forgot his
sickness for awhile. He and "Mr Clown"
went outside and together watched a balloon
float away until it was out of sight
“I'll never forget him," Jeff said.
SOCIETIES
From Page 1
The Demosthenians were
founded in 1803, two years
after classes started at the
University. Phi Kappa was
formed in 1820 by later
Georgia Supreme Court
Chief Justice Joseph
Lumpkin and Demosthenian
members who thought
competition was needed
After first debating
whether a monarchy was
preferred to a republic, the
societies held debates on a
wide range of topics, in
cluding "Which is most to be
feared, religious or political
fanaticism?" and "Would a
man be compelled by law to
marry the victim of his
seduction?"
In the early 1960's, Phi
Kappa invited several
prominent and controversial
speakers, including
segregationist Gov. Ross
Barnett of Mississippi, Mike
Wells of the Committee for
Non-Violent Action and
former FBI counterspy Karl
Prussion
The Phi Kappas caused a
stir in October 1963, when
they invited a member of the
American Communist Party
from New York to come to
the University for a debate
with University economics
professor David McCord
Wright. However, the
Committee on Student Af
fairs, consisting of six
faculty members and three
students, rejected the debate
proposal, and then-
University President O.C.
Aderhold said the University
"was not open to a com
munist whose avowed
purpose is to destroy the
ideas and fruits of freedom."
The 1970 s saw the
Demosthenians admit
women as members for the
first time, and the Phi
Kappas disbanded after 150
years of existence.
Whether the literary
societies, which had as
members such prominent
statesmen and orators as
Atlanta Constitution
Publisher Henry W Grady,
Confederate Vice President
Alexander H. Stephens and
U S. Sen and Confederate
General Robert Toombs, can
renew their rivalry remains
to be seen, but the members
of the newly-rejuvenated Phi
Kappa say they are deter
mined to make their efforts
last.
