I hough many students may not be aware
of it, the University is doing eveything possi
ble to lower the number of unwanted
pregnancies among students University
Health Services offers many different con
traceptive devices and educational pro
grams designed to prevent pregnancy.
The pharmacy at the Gilbert Health Center
distributes condoms, birth control pills,
intra uterine devices, spermicidal foams and
even a "morning after" pill.
The pharmacy has a variety of condoms
available and all contraceptives are
reasonably priced, according to Chief Phar
macist Ted Chaffin. He said any item that
may be purchased over the counter is readily
accessible to students at the pharmacy.
The other devices either require a
prescription or prior instruction by one of
Health Services' sexual education programs.
Of the birth control pills, Chaffin said, “we
have different pills with different amounts of
estrogen in them. We decide which pill (is
right) according to the girl’s
characteristics.' 1
A videotape on contraceptives can be seen
at 10 a m., 1 p.m and 3 p m. every weekday
at the health center. On the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month it can be
viewed at 5:30 p.m. with a nurse there to
answer questions. A sampling of contracep
tives accompany the tape to further
familiarize students with the alternatives.
We would like to encourage more males to
come and see the tape," said Nancy McNair,
health educator. "Viewing the tape is re
quired before prescription purchases (can be
made)."

"We must distinguish,
then, between the invert and
the pervert," McNiell said
"The pervert is not a
genuine homosexual:
rather, he is a heterosexual
who engages in homosexual
practices, or a homosexual
w ho engages in heterosexual
practices."
Carol, a co-founder of the
Lesbian Support Group,
responded in similar terms
to the idea that
homosexuality is "ab
normal."
"What's normal? How do
you define normality? In
stinctual? What’s abnormal
is to respond to a personality
that you're not responsive
to."
The idea that
homosexuality is abnormal
is an obstacle not only to
social acceptance of gays,
but also to a gay's self-
acceptance, according to
Pat Ingrained from
childhood with the idea that
homosexuality is unnatural,
bad. wrong and something
you don't talk about, the gay
person finds his or her
greatest struggle with the
self.
Because many gays know
at a very early age that they
have a different sexual
orientation, the struggle is
often a long one. But the
struggle is only to the gay
person’s benefit: "Gay
people seem more in touch
with themselves and their
sexual feelings because
they've had to deal with
them more," Pat said.
Concerned about the socio
political origins of thoughts
and emotions Pat spoke of.
Hatnerslaw has been trying
to get GIFTS to address
political issues.
"Right now. GIFTS
doesn't touch on political
issues because they feel it's
not consonant with their
aims. But I feel it is ap
propriate because a lot of the
reason why these people feel
miserable and paranoid is
because of political
repression," Hamerslaw
said.
"And this is a very critical
time because we have a very
conservative Congress A lot
of the gains we've made may
be lost. So my goal is to get
things politicized,”
Hamerslaw said.
The Lesbian Support
Group — a part of the Athens
Feminist's Alliance —
focuses on political topics
while helping both women
and men to accept them
selves as gays. The six-
month-old group meets
every Monday at 8 p.m. in
Memorial Hall. Although
small, the group is part of a
larger network of gay
supporters who don't always
attend meetings
"We’re essentially a
support group," Carol said.
"We provide times to work
out our understanding of
ourselves and of how to deal
with a world so paranoid of
you that is has to pass laws
against you. ”
Among the varied
examples of such laws is the
Immigration and
Naturalization Act of isr>2.
Congressmen at that time
included gays in this act,
which denies entry into the
U S. to “all aliens afflicted
with a psychopathic per
sonality, or sexual deviation,
