The Police's new album,
“Ghost in the Machine,"
fails to include a variety of
tunes that characterized
their previous records. It
does, however, incorporate a
few innovative twists that
work in half of the songs.
Although the group has
used an extensive horn
section, this time some of the
songs sound too much alike
A few, however, succeed in
achieving a more com
plicated style.
"Ghost in the Machine" is
an effort to experiment with
more brass and the result is
favorable with some tunes
and detrimental with others.
electric piano which
produces a soothing effect,
but the tempo periodically
changes so the listener isn't
put to sleep
Besides the increased
brass, keyboards are
probably the most noticeable
difference in the music. The
group makes good use of
both organ and piano in
many of the songs. On
"Secret Journey," the organ
creates a dramatic, ethereal
tone. Keyboards contribute
the same effect to "Spirits in
the Material World," in
which all the instruments,
sound effects and voices are
musically balanced, no one
element overpowering the
others.

Nov. 14. Tom Verlaine
Except, of course, for this
one. Almost nobody knows it,
but this man is one of the

course it will be the best
country show in six months
unless George Jones was up
last night Jerry, he's always

Nov. 17. Toots and the

to be the best reggae band
live. I know they're the best
on record. Tickets are $6 50

Nov. 18. Steve Hackett. He
used to be the lead singer for
Genesis, a group that many
people swore by. Of course
the rest of us swore at them.

In "Demolition Man,” the
backing bass and horns
would do an excellent job
accenting the song if there
were a good melody The
monotonous back beat
doesn't sound very good by
itself and grinds on your
nerves.
“Omegaman" is an
example of a failing attempt
of sprucing up a song. The
vocals are so complex that
the result is cacophonous. On
the other hand, “Darkness”
begins with a simple,
pleasing electric piano solo.
Unlike “Omegaman" the
tune moves smoothly with
clear and harmonious
vocals.
The group also tried to
make their guitar work more
intricate, which doesn't do
much for “Too Much In
formation." This cut uses
squawking guitars, blaring
horns and assorted shouting
that creates a lively
beginning, but becomes
noisy as the song wears on
“Rehumanize Yourself
blends the three elements
much better, sounding less
busy and still snappy
One of the distinguishing
traits of the Police is their
unmistakable voices
Fortunately, they don't
disappoint their fans on this
point. The demonstrative
and succinct words are sung
very bouncily in "One
World." The song is also
supported by a catchy
reggae beat and a wide
variety of percussion. One of
the more unique songs on the
album. “One World,"
combines horns with a
number of instruments such
as congas and bells.
A few of the songs off the
album achieve the goal of
complicating style without
sounding disjointed One of
singer lead-songwriter
Sting's best efforts since the
first album is "Every Little
Thing She Does is Magic,"
which is a more involved
composition that isn’t dulled
by an overpowering bass
The song progresses
cohesively, featuring an

painfully simple Police

The record, although not
their best, certainly contains
some enjoyable material.
