By DAVE WILLIAMS

Georgia's swim team will
compete in the Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics
for Women Championships
in Austin, Texas, March 17-
20, with the strongest field of
representatives in the
school's history
"We've qualified a lot of
people and this will be a very
important meet,” Bauerle
said. "In fact, this is the
biggest thing that’s ever
happened to this program."
Eleven girls will compete
in individual competition
and Georgia qualified all
five of its relay teams
Although several of the top
teams in the country will
participate at the NCAA
Championships, the field will
nonetheless be strong
"Potentially as a team, we
would like to finish in the top
10," Bauerle said. "It will be
a great challenge. Cal-
Berkeley, Miami and Texas
all will be participating at
the meet and they are
probably the team to beat
We’re just really excited
about going We’ve been
pointing to this all season.''
The women are led by
Beth Cuddeback, who
qualified in five individual
events. She has the best shot
at placing in the 200-yard
breaststroke and 200-yard
butterfly. Distance
freestyler Mary Jane
Billheimer should place in
both the 500- and 1650-yard
swims and Bauerle expects
Alison Orr to help out in the
200- and 100-yard individual
medleys.
Bauerle also expects good
results from team captain
Ann Fitzgerald, who
qualified in the 200- and 100-
yard backstroke and the 50-
yard butterfly. Alison
Farquhar qualified in both
individual medley races, the
50- and 100-yard butterfly
and the 50- and 100-yard
breaststroke.
Carol Downey, Barbie
Sumner, Libba Newman,
Cathy Huock, Laura Walker
and Jodi Stetson are also
competing for Georgia in the
individual events.
Notes: Bauerle has added
his first new addition to the
women's swim team, Lisa
Geiger, a high school All-
America breaststroker from
Glenside, Pa.
Geiger finished 12th in the
200-meter breaststroke at
the 1981 AAU Senior
Nationals during her career
at Cheltonham High School,
She also swam under Coach
Dick Shouldberg at Ger
mantown Academy Aquatic
Club.

Both Georgia track teams are in action this weekend,
competing in their respective national indoor cham
pionships The men travel to Detroit, Mich , for the NCAA
Indoor Championships, and the women head to Cedar Falls,
Iowa, for the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women Indoor Championships.
Eight members of Georgia's second-place Southeastern
Conference runner-up squad will be making the trip to
Detroit's Silverdome.
Billy Richard is competing in the 60-yard high hurdles
Richard has established himself as one of the premiere
hurdlers in the country Richard finished second at the
conference meet in Gainesville, Fla., two weeks ago, but set
a school record in a preliminary heat with a time of 7.18
seconds
Herschel Walker is running the 60-yard dash. He finished
second in the SEC in the 55-meter, and has improved steadily
since his first meet of the season
Georgia is sending two long jumpers to the national meet
Darryl Simmons, who set an SEC record with a 25-8U effort,
will make the trip along with Clarence Christian
Eddie Hodges and Brad Lewis represent the Bulldogs in
the 800-meter run, and the two will join Brad Freeman and
Greg Roseboro in the two-mile relay.
Sabina Horne and Kathy Rankins compete for the women
Horne participates in the 3,000-meter run, and Rankins’
specialty is competing in the high jump.
No.5 golfers meet nation's top two teams Tuesday
No one was envious of the
fifth-ranked Georgia men’s
golf team as it embarked on
its trek to Guadalajara,
Mexico, for the Rafael
Alarcon Intercollegiate
Tournament on Tuesday.
The team will face a tough
field of competitors this
weekend.
The Rafael Alarcon is
sponsored by Oklahoma
State, as Alarcon is an
alumnus of that school.
Oklahoma State is ranked
second in the nation and will
join No. 1 UCLA, No. 4
Houston and others in a very
competitive field.
Last year Georgia finished
an impressive third out of
the 15-team field. “If we play
up to our potential, we
should finish up that high
again this year," Coach Dick
Copas said. "That's not to
say we don't have a chance
to win it, if we really want it
and get after it.”
Copas will be expecting
strong production from
captain Bob Wolcott, who led
the Bulldogs in the Alarcon
last year with a 271 finish,
good for fourth overall.
