Police looking for suspect
in student stabbing attack
By SUSAN BRANDT
KMt and Black Staff Wrtlar
University police are searching tor a
black male, approximately six feet tall
in his middle to late 20s, in the March 5
stabbing attack of a University student
Police describe the suspect as having
a thin build and being clean-shaven, with
short hair and a gold cap on an upper left
tooth.
The incident occurred Friday at 9 p m
in the parking lot behind the visual arts
building, said Sgt David Brown of the
University police
The victim was putting some things in
the back of her car when she was con
fronted by a man attempting to enter the
car from the passenger side, he said
The man threatened her with a knife
and warned her not to scream, Brown
said The victim was cut on the forearm
when she jumped out of the car and ran
for help
Two people passing by at the time flag
ged down a University police car on
Jackson St. for help, but the observers
did not see the suspect, he said.
The victim was treated and released
from the University Health Center Her
injuries did not appear serious. Brown
said Police refused to release the vic
tim’s name.
The victim will assist University
police in making up a composite drawing
of the suspect in the next few days,
Brown said
“We are requesting that anyone who
knows or sees someone fitting this
description to contact University detec
tives,” Brown said.
University police have not stepped up
patrols on campus, according to Brown,
but they are checking any suspicious-
looking people
Brown said he did not consider the
area behind visual arts a high-crime
area But. he said, its location next to the
cemetery would allow an easy escape for
potential criminals.
“If people would call (University
police i about suspicious people, it would
definitely help us," Brown said

Despite all the facts and
figures to the contrary, if

its economic and
psychological rewards
Three College of

in recognition of their
outstanding excellence in
teaching.
Announced as winners of

Each received a plaque,

“The awards are given to
recognize outstanding ex
cellence in teaching," said
Christian Smit, director of
resident instruction.
"I’d like to personally
thank the students I’ve had
over the past 12 years. My
strong feeling is that
teaching should take first
place in the University,”
Lowrey said.
"The students are
responsible for my getting
this award. I’ve tried to put
myself in the students’
place and I try to teach
them the way I’d like to be
taught,” Perkins said
Said Williams: “I am ex
tremely pleased that
teaching is finally being
recognized in the college
and the University.”
The awards are named

The arrest stemmed from
an incident that occurred on
Feb. 25 when a University

Police Sgt. David Brown.
"The officer parked in
back of the fraternity house,
went in, and they told him
they would quieten down,"
Brown said.
When he returned to his
car, he found the driver's
door kicked in, Brown said.
Travis is a brother of the
