Committee to discuss systems
By C.E. REINEKE
Hrd and Black Suff Writer
The University's Registra
tion Advisory Committee is
scheduled to meet today to
discuss new computer
systems for the offices of
financial aid, admissions
and the registrar. The com
mittee, however, expects to
make no new policy recom
mendations.
According to Registrar
Bruce Shutt, chairman of the
committee, the meeting will
consist of "nothing all that
substantive” and will serve
mainly to keep members
abreast of University policy
changes and progress.
Shutt said the review of
financial aid will center
around a new data system
the University will imple
ment in mid to late April.
Marguerite Bruce of the
financial aid office, said the
new system, called the Stu
dent Aid System (SAS), will
help cut paper work, in
crease efficiency and
generate student award let
ters with greater speed than
the present manual method.
The system will be "on
line," that is, financial aid
officials will be able to pro
gram information directly
onto in-office display ter
minals. The elimination of
paperwork now involved in
the financial aid process will
give advisers more time to
spend with individual
students.
The committee is also ex
pected to discuss plans to
allow a similar on-line set up
in the admissions and
registrar's offices Such a
change would allow those of
ficials to expedite the handl
ing of permanent records
and admissions applications
by eliminating the need for
out-of-office keypunch pro
gramming. As with finan
cial aid, admissions and
records workers will have in
office terminals from which
to process data.
(ilass convicted, retains post
ATLANTA (UPD- Henry
County Sheriff Jimmy Glass
was convicted Thursday of
providing police protection
to drug smugglers, but he
will be allowed to retain his
post until he is sentenced
April 13.
Glass faces up to 95 years
in jail and SIOO.OOO in fines
for his conviction on six
counts of conspiracy and
corruption
US District Judge
Charles Moye set an April 13
sentencing date, but said
Glass would be allowed to
keep his job because his
conviction docs not become
official until a punishment
has been set.
The jury deliberated more
than 11 hours over a three-
dav period, finding Glass
guilty of conspiring with
former Henry County
Probate Judge Larry Tew
and former Henry County
Police chief Herschel Childs
CAREER-
From Page l

that he would have to get a

The Knglish professor —
who was also well versed in
history, philosophy,
astronomy and physics —
was all for it. "He asked, in
all seriousness, what field
they wanted him to get a
degree in." Swain says.
"That kind of thing is
becoming very rare "
to provide official protection
to drug planes landing in the
county.
Glass appeared shocked as
he left the courtroom and
refused comment.
Drug Enforcement Of
ficials broke up the
protection scheme when
they posed as smugglers
landing a drug plane at the
Berry Hill Airport. The
plane actually was a decoy
and contained no drugs.
But a second plane that
landed at the airport last
September carried
methaqualone and other
drugs. Police at that time
arrested Tew and Childs.
Glass was indicted last
November with the pair, who
pleaded guilty to reduced
drug charges and agreed to
testify against Glass. Both
men voluntarily
relinquished their jobs with
the county.
Glass maintained his
innocence throughout the
trial and refused to resign
from his post
During closing arguments,
U S. Attorney Craig Gillen
told the jury Glass’ story
"just doesn’t wash."
He said Glass was "the
most powerful man in Henry
County and he abused that
power that the people of
Henry County gave him."
