Harris makes Kodak All-America team
By CHARLES AARON
Kril ind Black Hud Writer
When Georgia's Janet Harris biew into Athens from the
Windy City last year as a High School All-American, the
Chicago freshman shouldered the usual great expectations
associated with any great talent
Lady Bulldog Coach Andy Landers did not deny that Harris
had awe-inspiring potential, and neither did he shelter his
fledgling star — a la John Thompson Landers was op
timistic, but he didn't rest all his dreams on one player
This past Friday, Landers' patience and Harris' ability
were mightily rewarded, as she became only the fourth
freshman ever to be named to the KODAK All-America
team Lynette Woodard, Ann Meyers and Cindy Brogdon are
the other three players who were named as freshmen
"Before the season, I wouldn't have bet a lot of money on
her making it. It would have been unrealistic,' lenders said.
"The only people you could realistically thing about were the
juniors who made it last year. The odds were against
everybody ."
Harris turned a few heads in her first collegiate game, as
she scored 39 points and grabbed 14 points against Valdosta
State To Landers surprise, she never really slowed down “I
didn't think she could continue at that pace, but she did," he
said
Harris, along with the 10 other players selected, received
their awards in Philadelphia Saturday night Being named
All-America is the penultimate honor for the Georgia
freshman in a year which she has won almost every
superlative imaginable.
Harris has also been named All-Southeastern Conference,
All Region and national Freshman-of-the-Year She led the
Lady Dogs in scoring and rebounding with averages of 22 0
and 12.4 respectively, and was tops on the team in steals.
Landers believes that Harris certainly deserves to be men
tioned in the same breath with players such as Woodard and
Meyers "She stood the supreme test of a long season and her
stats were better than those other players,” Landers said
“Sure 1 think you can compare her to those people ”
The naming of Harris to the All-America team also served
another purpose It diminished, somewhat, the disappoint
ment of closing out such a successful season <21-91, on a
depressing note The Lady Dogs traveled to Tempe, Ariz ,
with hopes of a victory, but returned with their pride bruised
and battered. The Arizona State Sun Devils blasted the Lady
Dogs' 97-77 and brought Georgia's season to a screeching
halt
Reflecting on the loss. Landers' tone draws solemn. "Time
kind of takes the emotion out of it, but I was really disap
pointed that we lost so big, ” he said It was not indicative of
the kind of season we had If we had to go out, we wanted to
lose by one point. It tended to take the gleam off a great
season."
The margin of victory shocked the Georgia coach. "I had
confidence nobody could do that to us," he said. “In a way it
was embarrassing I hope the players were embarrassed.
They should have been ’'
Landers didn't stay in Arizona and drown his sorrows,
however He is blazing the recruiting trail and has already
signed one coveted player Lisa O'Connor, a 6-1 Parade All-
America from Cartersville, GA , is Georgia’s first signee of
the year. O’Connor led Cartersville High to the semifinals of
the state playoffs, averaging 27 points and 17 rebounds a
game
She was recently named Georgia AA Player-of-the-Year
for the second time and is considered one of the top five for
wards in the nation "Lisa is a model forward-type and a
fierce rebounder," Landers said. “She fired the outlet pass,
has an excellent inside game and compliments an outstan
ding repertoire of offensive moves with a nice shooting
touch."
Landers is also hoping to sign another couple of players
within the next two weeks. Teresa Edwards, a first team
High School All-America from Cairo, is an extremely ver
satile player who can play both guard spots and small for
ward, and Landers is optimistic about obtaining her services.
Edwards was recently named Georgia AA Player-of-the-
Year and led her team to the state championship.'
Another player Landers is looking at is Suzie Gardner of
Mount Juliet, Tenn. Gardner, also a shooting guard, will visit
Georgia this week.
“We would like to sign three players, posssibly four,"
Landers said. "But recruiting is a tough situation They
might want to come and then not even come."

"They're a tough team.” The starting time for that game is
3:00 and Guy Stargell will be on the mound.
To improve, Webber said the Dogs need two things, “more
consistent pitching and more timely hitting. Tim Barnette
has pitched real well. He’s been the most consistent this
year.” Barnette, the junior, leads the team with a 2.52 ERA.
Webber said the play of Rick Fuentes and David Jackson
has been excellent thus far. Fuentes leads the team with a
Georgia vs. Mercer, 3

.433 batting average and Jackson, playing steadily at third
base, sports a .402 average.
Webber said there’s still plenty of games left, but the
matchups this weekend against Kentucky are important.
"They're a young team and they've got the same record as
us."
Before that, though, Georgia must face Georgia State
tomorrow in Atlanta.

While most Georgia
students were taking it easy
over spring break, both
Georgia track teams were in
action.
The men's and women's
squads had two meets each,
as they alternated between
Athens and Gainesville, Fla.
Coach Lewis Gainey's men
took seven first places in one
meet and five in the second.
Coach Steve Sitler’s Bulldog
Babes finished with five
firsts in one meet and four in
the other.
In the Georgia Relays on
March 20, Herschel Walker
won the 100-meter in
vitational division with an
outstanding time of 10.10.
Teammate Ricky Campbell
finished on Walker's heels,
turning in a 10.11 Both
Georgia sprinters qualified
for the NCAA Cham
pionships.
Billy Richard continued
his dominance of the 110-
meter high hurdles (13.82),
qualifying him for the
NCAAs.
The same was true in the
long jump, as Clarence
Christian took first <25-10‘/4),
making him eligible for the
nationals.
The Georgia 4x200 spring
relay team of Walker,
Campbell, Tommy Ford and
Eddie Hodges was also
victorious, with a 3:19.08.
The 400-meter relay four
some of Walker, Campbell,
Jackson and Ford took first
at 40.14, earning themselves
an NCAA bid.
Meanwhile, Kathy
Rankins was the big story
for the Bulldog Babes,
breaking three records in the
high jump. Last weekend at
the Georgia Invitational the
sophomore leaped 20-11 ‘A,
the second-best collegiate
jump of the year. With the
jump Rankins broke the
existing school record, the
meet record and the Georgia
track record.
The women faired equally
well the previous weekend at
the Lady Gator Invitational
Gilbert set a school record
with first place in the high

Spring break for many Georgia students consisted of a trip
to Florida and lots of relaxation. Even the baseball team
made the trip south, but it was no pleasure vacation.
Coach Steve Webber's Bulldogs faced one of the hottest
teams in the Southeastern Conference — Florida — and came
away with two losses
The first game of Saturday's doubleheader was exciting
throughout and was decided only in the bottom of the seventh
inning Florida came back to win 6-5.
In the second game, the Gators shellacked Georgia 11-2. As
Webber put it, "There's not a lot you can say about that one.”
Sunday’s game between the two teams was rained out. The
Dogs were 2-1 the rest of the break, defeating Howard and
Columbus and losing to Auburn, The Dogs recorded their
first shutout of the season with a 21-0 romp over Howard
Coming into today's non-conference home game against
Mercer of Macon, Georgia is 9-12 and 2-6 in the SEC com
petition. One of those SEC wins came at Auburn on March 23,
a 10-7 decision.
Webber expects a good game from Mercer, saying,
