Marbury named to NIT All-Tournament Team
Wilkins mulls pro decision after NIT loss
By JACKIE CROSBY

NEW YORK - Falling one
point short of advancing to
the final round of the
National Invitation Tour
nament here at Madison
Square Garden was a bitter
ending for the Georgia
Bulldogs, after decisive
defeats in the three previous
home-game appearances
made Georgia the tour
nament favorite.
But the sporadic season
was over when the final
buzzer sounded with the ball
in Eric Marbury's hands,
and Purdue had defeated
Georgia 61-60. Not only was
it Marbury's last game, but
Dominique Wilkins was
probably playing his final
game in a Georgia uniform.
As reporters crowded
around him following the
game, Wilkins was speaking
of the team's play that night,
not looking ahead to the
future or his decision.
“We just finished playing
our last game," Wilkins
said. ‘Tve gat a couple of
weeks to think it over.”
Wilkins has until the
middle of May to make his
decision and few will be
surprised if he decides to
play professionally Even
Georgia coaches feel that
Wilkins was saying his
goodbyes last Monday night.
He had a poor showing by
his standards, scoring 15
points and grabbing two
rebounds. He made only 6-of-
15 field goals. But he played
with an ankle injury he
received against Virginia
Tech in the third round of the
NIT, and did not practice
before the semi-final game.
“I really wasn't hurting all
that bad,” he said. “It got
kind of tight in the second
half, but then I started to feel
a little better. I don't want to
make excuses for myself.
We played back to back with
this team and just got
beaten.”
Wilkins finished the season
averaging 21.3 points and 8.1
rebounds and was the
leading scorer in all but
three of Georgia's games

court brilliance is one of the
reasons Georgia made three
home-court appearances in
the opening rounds.
If Wilkins’ brilliance was
lacking against Purdue,
Marbury took up much of the
slack and was named to the
All-Tournament team for his
efforts. In the first half,
Marbury scored 14 points on
7-of-8 shooting and pulled
down three rebounds. The
Brooklyn, N.Y., native
finished as the team's
leading scorer with 20 and
had five rebounds.
Marbury also led Georgia
in scoring in the second
round of the tournament,
equaling his career-high 25
points against the Terrapins
Although the loss was
disappointing, in advancing
to the semi-final round the
Dogs did something no other
Georgia team has ac
complished. The strong
season finish should be a big
boost to the growing
program.
One high school All-
American has already Ver
bally committed to Georgia.
Donald Hartry, a 6-foot-2
guard from Milledgeville, is
the first high school player
Georgia Coach Hugh
Durham hopes to sign on
April 14.
Assistant Coach Don
Beasley said the recruiting
outlook is bright because of
the Dogs’ strong showing in
the NIT.
“Most youngsters like to
get involved with something
when it is a success,”
John Shafer, assistant
athletic director at Van
derbilt for the past year, has
been named Georgia’s
assistant athletic director
for business, the athletic
department announced
Monday.
Shafer will join the
Georgia staff May 15.
Shafer served as the ad
ministrative assistant for
ticket sales at Auburn for
three years before joining
the Vanderbilt staff
Beasley said. “Anytime you
have a program that’s
winning and looks good, it
has an excellent effect. We
had 19 wins against much
better competition than last
year and the fact that we
played four tournament
games is saying something
for our program.
He was an All-
Southeastern Conference
shoi istop for the War Eagles
in 1969 and earned his B.S.
and M S degrees at Auburn.
Georgia Athletic Director
Vince Dooley said, "We are
delighted that John has
decided to join our program.
He brings an excellent
background in ad
ministration and business
affairs and we are confident
he will be an outstanding
addition."

Gibbs, Howell named to coaching staff

When Georgia takes the
gridiron next fall in the
season opener against
Brigham Young, there will
be two new faces among the
Bulldog coaching staff.
Alex Gibbs joins Hornsby
Howell as the latest member
to join Vince Dooley's staff
as the Bulldog Head Coach
enters his 19th season at
Georgia.
Dooley announced last
week that Gibbs, who has
served as offensive coor
dinator at Auburn for the
past two years, will take
over the duties of offensive
line coach. Gibbs will
replace Wayne McDuffie,
who recently joined the
Atlanta Falcons coaching
staff.
Howell was named as
scout team coach earlier in
March, and is presently
assistant athletic director at
North Carolina A&T. Howell,
a three-time Coach-of-the-
Year at North Carolina A&T,
will fill the void left by
Howard "Doc” Ayers who
retired almost a year ago.
Despite the hiring of the
two new coaches, only Gibbs
was present at the opening of
spring practice Monday.
Howell is expected to join
Dooley's staff at the first of
June.
Gibbs served under Pat
Dye and Doug Barfield at
Auburn. He also served as
offensive coordinator and of-

Stan Dooley to appear in court
.golf
‘ OGftSE I
Georgia defensive end Stan Dooley will
appear in Athens-Clarke County
Magistrate's Court before Judge Pierre
Boulogne April 8 in connection with a charge
of violating the Georgia controlled
substances act.
Dooley was arrested March 8 following an
incident in the Brumby Hall parking lot on
March 4 when police said they found him in
possession of less than one ounce of mari
juana.
Dooley, along with rover Gary Cantrell,
was suspended indefinitely March 17 for
“violation of athletic department policies
and team rules,” according to a prepared
statement. The players will be on probation
for spring quarter and lose the part of their
scholarships that pays for room and board
at McWhorter Hall.
