The Red and Black
Revue dazzles with variety
A review
By OLIVIA SCRIVEN
Hot and Mack Contributing Writer
Freshly back from spring
break, the Committee for
Black Programs took im
mediately to the task of
entertaining the students
Monday night and presented
the vivacious and immense
ly entertaining Indiana Soul
Revue.
The Revue, composed of 45
undergraduates from In
diana University at Bloom
ington, gave a packed
Memorial Hall Ballroom
soul music from Wilson
Pickett to Otis Redding to
Prince.
The group is coordinated
by the Afro-American In
stitute at IU, which allows
the troupe's members to get
credit for their road per
formances through a six-
hour course, "Soul Music
Culture and Performance.”
The show, which was
highlighted by fantastic
costumes and a brass-
oriented band, consisted of
two parts, the first being a
tribute to the giants of iy60s
soul music. Singing past hits
by such greats as Wilson
Pickett, James Brown,
Karla Thomas. Aretha
Franklin and Sly Stone were
the IU Revue’s two separate
groups, Jeff Davis and Ex
pressions in Ebony, con
sisting of five members
each.
Jeff Davis dedicated most
of its songs to the late Otis
Redding and included a ren
dition of his memorable
"Dock of the Bay,” featuring
Keith Hayes on lead vocals
Expressions in Ebony
devoted the better part of its
performance to Aretha
Franklin, reviving such
golden oldies as "Dr.
Feelgood" and “Respect,”
which ended with a piercing
saxophone solo by Vincent
Connors.
Each tune was commen-
dably handled, but when
Donna Taylor and Derrick
Lilly came together with

Kevue entertained at Memorial Hall Monday
their respective groups
backing them to sing Ike and
Tina Turner’s "Proud
Mary,” the Revue showed
just why it is in such great
demand.
The duo captured Ike's
suaveness and Tina's
sultriness and still in
corporated a part of their
own personalities into the
number.
Royal Joiner and Don
Holman were instrumental
in entertaining the audience
while members of the Revue
changed their brightly col
ored costumes. But during
one break, which was pro
longed due to technical dif
ficulties, Holman tried ad-
libbing a few jokes that
weren't successful in amus
ing the audience.
The men tried their hands
at Kool and the Gang's “Get
Down on It" and Earth Wind
and Fire's "Let's Groove,"
during which they pulled
several ladies from the au
dience to dance on stage. But
Expressions in Ebony prov
ed to be the dominate force,
receiving several standing
ovations for their handling of
a medly of Chaka Khan's
“We Can Work It Out" and
“Watcha Gonna Do for Me,”
while equally giving rise to
that long-running summer
hit of 1981, “Endless Love.”
Each female proved to have
an extraordinary vocal
capacity, enabling them to
handle with an assured ease
the complexities of each
song.
