The National Collegiate
Athletic Association an
nounced Wednesday that the
state of South Carolina has
been ruled academically
ineligible and will be placed
on probation for the
remainder of the decade
Under the probation, the
state will not be allowed to
participate in post-season
bowl games, televise any of
its sporting events or slay up
past 9 p m on school nights
The unprecedented eight-
year penalty is the longest
ever to be handed down by
the NCAA, but David Burst,
a high-ranking NCAA
troubleshooter, said the
lengthy punishment was
necessary
"We had to make it (the
probation! eight years,"
Burst said "It'll take at
least half that time to ex
plain to those simpletons
what the word ineligible
means They aren't too good
with words which contain
more than four letters."

When asked if he intended
to protest the ruling, the
Governor replied, “What
ruling?”
Danny Fraud, coach of the
national champion Clemp-
son football team, reacted to
the news with an amazing
display of diplomacy and
showed concern for his
scholarship athletes.
"Who gives a crap,”
Fraud said "Does this mean
that the players are going to
have to give back their
cars?”

The probation is an
especially hard pill to
swallow for Clempson,
which has seen a recent
surge of respectability in its
athletic program Along with
the national championship in
football, the Tigers' tennis,
soccer and soil identification
teams have enjoyed national
prominence in recent years
"This just goes to show,”
Clempson Athletic Director
H.C. (Bull) McChicken said,
“that crime doesn’t pay
Well, I guess it pays a little
— well, more than just a
little. I guess it pays a lot.
Heck, we paid a bundle. Did
you hear what Rollins got
while he was here?"
The other major college in
the state, the University of
South Carolina, was
unavailable for comment on
the ruling. It seems that
someone fired all of the
coaches early Wednesday
and the students'were out of
town on spring break.
"They’ve been gone for
about three weeks now,”
said Francis Ruth Atboy,
housemother for the Delta
Upsilon Mu fraternity. “I
think they said they would be
back sometime in Sep
tember, but you never can
tell.”
The smaller colleges of the
state were extremely upset
with the ruling and several
of the presidents hinted that
they may seek federal in
tervention in the situation
"We may seek federal
intervention in the
situation,” said Mars Hill
College president Dr. Scott
Towels Other academic
leaders were not as cdlm in
their reaction to the
probation.
“I’m gonna kill
somebody,” said Lucious
"Bubba” Boswell, president
of Bubba’s School of Fine
Arts and Other Stuff. “This
ain’t right."

game last fall. Blue commit

Fooley revamps offense
By JOSEPH MAMA
Kudr and Bleak Foottball Analyst
Georgia Coach Vince Fooley, in a move not
totally unexpected, announced Wednesday
that he was completely revamping the
Bulldogs' offense and defense for the 1982
season Fooley plans to go from the I forma
tion to a variation of the old Full-House
Backfield, referred to by the coach as the
“Full-House Hershey," and he plans to
eschew the Split-60 for a version of the pre
vent defense called the “Pitt Prevent."
"I think it's time for a change," Fooley
said, "if Georgia is going to be the football
dynasty of the 1980s, we're going to have to
go with our strong suits, and these changes
suit the players we have.”
The "Full-House Hershey” may be the
most innovative offensive set in the past
quarter of the century. The formation is built
around Georgia tailback Hershey Walker,
and is designed only for the run. Georgia will
run three basic plays out of the formation:
Hershey to the right, Hershey to the left and
Hershey up the middle.
Said Fooley of the new wrinkle: “I think it
will surprise a lot of teams.”
Fooley said the Bulldogs will no longer
pass because of the new offense and thus will
no longer use a quarterback or receivers, in
stead simply hiking the ball to Hershey.
“I never liked to use those players anyway,
and besides, the pass is a thing of the past,”
Fooley said. "And the pass works against
you — especially when the other team does
it.”
The "Pitt Prevent,” though not as in
novative as the "Full-House Hershey,” will
be a big departure from the Split-60 Georgia
teams have become famous for. The defense
is similar to the one Georgia used against
Pittsburgh in the Sugar Bowl that helped the
Panthers win, and it includes a blitz on
fourth-down situations.
“I’m sure the fans will expect a defense as
exciting as our new offense, and the ‘Pitt
Prevent’ will surely be exciting. The Pitt
sburgh fans loved it at this year’s Sugar
Bowl,” Fooley said.
terception was buried
among all the other
mistakes.
"I never liked Snot,” Blue
said. “He stole all the atten
tion from me in the 1980
Florida game when he
scored the touchdown to win
it for us."
Coach Vince Fooley said
he was completely unaware
of the bitter feelings between
the two players. “There
were never any strong words
exchanged between Blue and
Snot while I have been
around them,” Fooley said.
“This comes as a complete
surprise to me. I realized
Blue had a miserable game
in Clemson, but he made so
many mistakes in that game
that the interception just
went unnoticed."
Blue said there was a dual
reason for his interception.
“One was to prevent Snot
from breaking the record
and the other was to show
pro scouts that I can go both
ways,” he said. “In today's
sagging economy, I can be
quite an asset. I'm what you
could call a bargain player.”
Snot said he was aware of
Blue’s intentions, but it just
gave him added incentive to
break the record. “I knew
what he was doing when he
lofted the ball,” he said.
"But when he pulled down
that interception and forced
me to wait another week to
break the record, it gave me
motivation to rewrite the
record book."
“He’s always been jealous
of me since we were
freshmen," Snot said. "I was
getting more playing time
and worked my way into the
starting lineup while he was
still substituting for Jeff
Ply burn."
