Promoter may help Union
By LAURO OTTO
Ked and Black Staff Writer
The University Union may be booking big
ger concert acts in the future due to its grow -
ing relationship with Chesapeake Concerts,
acording to Parks Brown, the newly elected
Union president.
Last quarter, two shows - The Oak Ridge
Boys and The Commodores — proved to
Chesapeake, a regional promoting company,
that the Union could successfully host big-
name shows on campus. Brown said But he
added, the Union has not always been able to
work with promoters
"College students’ unions are usually not
taken very seriously by promoters, par
ticularly Georgia's because of the Col
iseum," he said
Many bands are reluctant to play in the
Coliseum because they have heard it has
poor acoustics, Brown said.
The Union worked with Chesapeake Con
certs on the last two campus shows winter
quarter, Union adviser Candy Sherman said,
“We have a good relationship with them
and have had one for about six months now,"
she said.
Sherman said the Union would rather work
with the promoters on concerts because they
will either cover the initial cost of the show or
give the Union 20 percent of the ticket sales.
"This way we don’t stand to lose that much
money if the crowd is small," she said.
The Union usually handles setting up the
concerts and is responsible for the ticket
sales.
Heading spring quarter’s concert line-up
are Phil and the Blanks with Little Tigers at
Legion Field April 17, but no other definite
shows have yet been planned, Brown said.
Sherman said the outlook for this quarter
is still hazy The concerts division is trying to
book the local new-wave band the B-52s, but
has not yet received a response from the
band's management
“We submitted a bid and they have not
called us back on it," she said. “We don't
know what's going on yet.”
She said spring shows are particularly
hard to arrange because the bands' tour
schedules are slow and the Union can only
accept bigger concerts when using the Col
iseum.
The newly elected 1982-83 Union officers
began their jobs at the start of this quarter
Brown and 12 others were selected by a
panel of advisers and students from the
Union's previous board of governors.
Other officers elected to the board are:
Cheryl Iverson, junior, vice president for
assessment and evaluation; Sally Langstaff,
junior, vice president for public relations:
David Key, sophomore, treasurer and Patty
Sellers, junior, secretary.
The new Coordinator Board consists of
Steve Knapp, graduate student, cinematic
arts; Jim Flax, junior, concerts; Tonya
Allen, junior, ideas and issues; Tom
Reynolds, junior, outdoor recreation; Bruce
Moore, freshman, performing arts; Cary
Heyward, senior, summer division; Leslie
Jolley, freshman, variety and Nancy Propst,
junior, visual arts.

Pendergrass charged following accident
PHILADELPHIA, (UPI)
— Police have cited rhythm
and blues singer Teddy
Pendergrass with driving
with a suspended license and
reckless driving in the
March 18 accident that
paralyzed him.
Police said the citations,
which carry a total of $245 in
fines, conclude their in
vestigation into the early
morning accident in which
Pendergrass fractured
vertebrae in his lower neck
and damaged his spinal
cord
Pendergrass, 32, has been
paralyzed from the
shoulders down since the
accident, in which his 1981
Rolls Royce slammed into a
tree on a curve.
Last week he underwent
three hours of surgery to
implant a bone graft to
enable him to hold his head
up. Doctors have given no
prognosis for the singer’s
recovery from the paralysis.
