Student ratings of profs taken seriously —sometimes
By JOHN O'BRIEN
RH and Blarli ( omrtbuttn* Writer
There may be no greater thrill for
students than the one that comes on
that long-awaited day at the end of a
grueling quarter — teacher evaluation
day
When the teacher is finally out the
door, the students sometimes cry,
"Revenge’" and attack the evaluation
forms
But using the evaluation as a weapon
of vengeance was not the original plan
of its creators The evaluations, in
which students rate their teacher's per
formance, were created by students to
be used not as a threat against
teachers, but as a device that would
give other students an idea of what to
expect from different professors
Soon after the then-active student
government started the student evalua
tions in 1972, it tried to put together a
pamphlet of the results so students
would have a handy reference at
registration time But the pamphlet ap
parently died a quick death
“It would have been too expensive
and too much trouble for the students to
get the thing published,” said Louise
McBee, associate vice president for
Academic Affairs
Now students couldn't see the results
if they wanted to
“It’s up to individual schools,”
McBee says, “but none of them make it
their policy to show the results to
students ’’
The student evaluation is now used as
one of several options a school or col
lege may choose from in evaluating its
teachers The Board of Regents re
quires that every faculty member be
evaluated at least once a year The
evaluation can be done by peers,
department heads, outside consultants,
students or even the teacher himself
But the board does not specifically re
quire that teachers be evaluated by
students "They're not required, but
they're encouraged,” said regents Vice
Chancellor for Student Services
Thomas F. McDonald “There's
nothing magical about them — they
won't mean automatic promotion or fir
ing — but we think they can be valuable
to both students and teachers "
“It's in the back of teachers' minds
that if they bear down too hard they
might not get evaluated as highly,"
said assistant professor of journalism
Bruce Swain “The student evaluation
can intimidate teachers "
But Swain said this intimidation can
actually separate the good teachers
from the bad. “A good teacher isn't go
ing to let it bother him or her," he said.
"And most teachers won't knuckle
under to it.”
According to College of Business Ad
ministration Dean William Flewellen,
however, the problem of intimidation
shouldn't even exist with student
evaluations “I've found that students
won’t rate a teacher down if he’s hard,"
Flewellen said, “but rather, they'll rate
him down if he’s uninteresting “
A faculty member in the College of
Arts and Sciences, who wished to re
main anonymous, pointed out what he
perceived as another problem with the
student evaluations He says they 're in
convenient, even annoying — especially
in the night school
"It's very hard to plan for them," he
said. "One time I even had to hand
them out with the final exam because
the evening school decided that's when
they wanted them done ''
The teacher also charged that the
night school makes little use of the
evaluations. “The evaluations are
sometimes not returned to me," he
said. "How am I supposed to use them
as a guide to improvement if I never see
them'’"
However, one night school official
said the forms are regularly returned to
the professors as soon as possible. "We
normally try to return them as soon as
we review them," said Bill Johns,
director of the night school “We don't
always do it, but our intention is to get
them to the instructor.” he said.
The forms are used both to evaluate
the teacher and also the provide feed
back for the instructor. Johns said
“It's not a greatly in-depth type of
program It gets at what we think we
need to know," he said
Some schools and colleges take the
evaluations more seriously than others.
The College of Home Economics, for in
stance, uses student evaluations, along
with other evaluations, in selecting the
winner of its outstanding teacher award
and as indicators for possible raises
and promotions.
In the College of Business Ad
ministration, however, the student
evaluations are used not to determine
good teaching, but bad “A teacher who
doesn't get adequate ratings doesn’t get
tenure," Flewellen said.
In the business school, the student
evaluations weigh about 40 percent of
the overall rating of teachers
In the College of Education, the stu
dent evaluations are not even required
"We leave it up to the teacher to decide
how he or she wants to be evaluated,"
says Clifford Lewis, associate to the
dean for instruction. "But most choose
student evaluations anyway.” •
McBee explained the inconsistencies
in administering and use of the evalua
tions across schools by saying that it’s
up to the individual dean to make his
own rules. "Because the nature of the
disciplines varies so greatly, it would
be very difficult to set up any kind of
uniform format and requirements for
evaluations,” McBee said
“We have 12 different plans for
evaluation,” said Virginia Trotter, vice
president for Academic Affairs
“Schools can choose student, peer,
department head or other forms, but
most use combinations.”
As for the combinations, Arts and
Sciences Dean Jack Payne said he's
probably seen them all. “There are 27
departments in this college, and each
one has a considerably different
evaluation plan One of the reasons is
that it’s so hard to define good teaching
It has no single definition." Payne said
Some schools and colleges require
that student evaluations be done just
once a school year for every different
class a professor teaches But in others,
teachers must be evaluated more fre
quently, and thus more demands are
put both on teachers and students.
The School of Pharmacy requires
that each of its teachers be evaluated
by students in every class
"That wouldn't be so bad," said
Associate Dean Durward Entrekin,
"but our students usually take five to
seven classes a quarter
“Our teachers can make some use of
these things because our students par
ticipate so actively in filling them out,"
Entrekin said "Even though they have
to fill out five to seven of them a
quarter, our students take the evalua
tions very seriously. So do we.
Along with leading him to promotions
and raises, the evaluations can tell a
teacher where he went wrong and what
needs to be changed. “They let me
know when it's time for a change," said
Donald Dawe, a veterinary medicine
professor.
But still other teachers think the
evaluations are not all that reliable.
“It's not an exact science." said George
Hough, a department head and pro
fessor in the school of journalism.
“What you usually get are three kinds
of responses: from the totally
dissatisfied student, from the wildly en
thusiastic student — neither of which
are really much help to you — and a few
from the fair, critical student, which do
tell you something worthwhile."
