Who cares about some old face that launched a thousand ships? These are the legs that
helped to raise more than $1,078 for Atlanta’s Scottish Kite Hospital in Tau Kappa Epsilon's
annual Miss Legs contest. The winner, Bonnie Burns of Alpha Chi Omega, reputedly dazzled
the judges in the talent portion of the contest as well. Burns' sorority sisters contributed
$376.10 to the cause, outdistancing the nearest competition by a more than two-to-one margin.
An Alpha Chi Omega won this year for the seventh time in a row. retiring the trophy.

Traffic commission reinstated

The Clarke County Board
of Commiaaioner* recently
reinatated the Clarke County
Traffic Commission to pro
mote accident prevention
and public awareness of
alcohol-related accidents,
said Dan Dupree, traffic
commission chairman
"The commissioners ex
pressed to me that they liked
what the commission had
done in the past and wanted
to try it again," Dupree said.
The commission existed
during 1977-78, but was
discontinued because “the
chairman was unfortunately
so busy he didn't have the
time to devote to the job He
had every good intention, but
it dried up," Dupree said.
The traffic commission,
re-created by the board at its
February meeting, is still in
the embryo stage and is
working out what specific
actions it will take, Dupree
said. Driving under the in
fluence of alcohol will be a
major focus for the commis
sion
“We know one of our main
objectives is the accidents
drunk-driving causes," he
said "We want to heighten
public awareness, especially
among the young ."
"We are concerned with
the habitual violators," said
Ronald Chandler, Clarke
County police chief and a
member of the commission
“The idea of this program is
not to go out in Clarke Coun
ty and throw a net out We
just want to make the streets
safer," Chandler said.
Dupree said the previous
traffic commission had con
centrated its efforts on the
young people of Athens, par-
ticularly high school
students “We want to em
phasize how important good
driving skills are for
everyone’s safety," he said.
Corp. Mel Hegwood of the
Athens Police Department
said the commission will be
very instrumental in in
creasing the public
awareness of DUI and the

The commission has asked
the county commissioners
for funding for fiscal year
1983, which begins in July,
Dupree said. If the money is
allocated it will come from
excess funds from the DUI
rehabilitation course given
in Clarke County for DUI of
fenders, Dupree said.
Dupree said he hopes the
commission will be receiv
ing some funding from a
grant the state Office of
Highway Safety has propos
ed for Clarke County.
Escape, comedy
letid list of movie
surveyfavorites
LOS ANGELES (CPS) -
More than ever before, col
lege students are turning to
entertainment and adven
ture films to blot out their
scholarly and economic wor
ries, according to a recent
magazine poll of over 1500
students across the country.
Escapism dominated
students' choices for their
favorite movie of 1981. Their
favorite was "Raiders of the
Lost Ark," followed by "Ar
thur," “The French Lieute
nant’s Woman,” "Body
Heat” and "Stripes.”
“There’s no doubt the
market has gotten away
from heavy social comment
films, and become more in
terested in escape films,"
aid Randy Achee, publisher
of Ampersand magazine,
which conducts the annual
student poll.
In contrast to the populari
ty of dramatic films of years
past, the student population
this year has shifted to
lighter, more entertaining
films, Achee said. Collegians
picked comedy as their
favorite type of movie,
followed by adventure,
suspense and science fiction.
"The job market, the
economy, and other factors
are causing a lot of students
to say, ‘Gee, when I get out
of school I don’t even know if
I’ll have a job.' Students
don't know whether they’ll
be able to have the same
standard of living as their
parents. It’s kind of a
downer, and they need
something to take their
minds off of it.”
