People united have freedom
TO T.HE EDITOR:
I completely disagree with
C. E Reineke’s April 8 arti
cle, ' Does freedom really
exist." Contrary to what
Reineke would have people
to believe, John Dewey was
absolutely correct when he
said, "The foundation of
democracy is faith in capaci
ty of human nature, faith in
human intelligence and
cooperative experience."
Dewey’s words are some
times twisted by a few
misguided souls during
isolated instances
Granted, Japanese-
American citizens were in
terned in World War II,
Americans were blacklisted
in the McCarthy Era and in
nocent civilians were bomb
ed in neutral Cambodia dur
ing the Vietnam War.
However, Reineke, in his one
way search for truth, failed
to examine the other side of
the coin. "Human in
telligence and cooperative
experience" also formed the
basis of the public outcry
which condemned and even
tually extinguished these
atrocities.
Reineke defines freedom
as “an exemption or libera
tion from some other person
or arbitrary power.” His
definition should be amend
ed to read "an exemption or
liberation from some other
person or arbitrary power so
long as it does not deter the
individual from his respon
sibilities to the well-being of
his fellow man." In the
United States people vote for
candidates who they think
will serve their best in
terests, and not, as Reineke
would have them believe,
serve the politician's
"egotistical tendencies." As
exemplified in Watergate
and Abscam, "egotistical
tendencies" quickly die out.
Only when groups of peo
ple pool together for what
they perceive as a rightful
and justifying cause, can
true freedom actually exist.
Battle lines are constantly
being drawn on such heated
issues as civil rights, crea
tionism, ERA, abortion, gun
control, El Salvador, issues
too large and complex for
one individual to change
Reineke's “free in
dividualism" could only
breed “carefree in
dividualism" which could
only lead to anarchy
Many people will disagree
with decisions that are
made. They may feel that
they arc "victims" and are
being "controlled” by the
democratic process Maybe
Reineke is one of these un
fortunate souls One must
realize that in a democratic
society, the majority speaks
for the individual, and that is
the best hope the individual
has going for him in holding
on to the freedoms he so
preciously holds.
To become involved in the
minority, disagreeing but
accepting the opinions of the
majority can be a heavy
responsibility. Similarly, the
majority must be careful to
respect the opinions of the
minority.
