The men's tennis team, coming off an impressive showing
in the Georgia Intercollegiate Championships last weekend,
plays its last non-conference match of the regular season to
day at 2 p.m when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets visit
Henry Feild Stadium
While the Tech-Georgia tennis rivalry is not nearly as
heated as the football rivalry, Georgia's players will be out to
reinforce their stronghold as the leaders of collegiate tennis
in the state.
The Bulldogs have defeated Georgia Southern in a dual
match (8-1) and swept the GIC tournament over the
weekend. A victory over Tech today would make a clean
sweep of Georgia ’s intra-state activity this year
Tech is led by Ruben Cruz who was defeated by Georgia's
Allen Miller 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the GIC. Miller
went on to win the singles championship with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4
victory over fellow Bulldog Deane Frey
Georgia's no. 1 singles player, All-America John Mangan,
will not play today as he is recovering from a back injury
which kept him out of the weekend tournament.
Today's match will mark the return of senior Peter Lloyd
who has not played in a dual match for the Bulldogs for
almost a month because of an ankle injury.

Lloyd did participate in the GIC and made a good showing
considering the layoff. Teaming with freshman George
Bezecny in the doubles competition, Lloyd advanced to the
semi-finals, losing finally to eventual champions and team
mates Miller and Ola Malmqvist.
“Pete's not able to cover the court as well as he could
(were he not injured)," Coach Dan Magill said, "but the
trainers say it doesn't hurt to play on it (the injured ankle).
They say it only help strengthen it.”
Freshmen Miller, Frey and Bezecny have made steady im
provements this year, and all three made it to the semi-finals
of the GIC and Miller and Frey battled in the finals.
Magill is relying on these youngsters to continue producing
as the season moves into its crucial stages
The Bulldogs begin playing the upper echelon of the
Southeastern Conference Saturday when the Florida Gators
come to Athens. That match will mark the beginning of a six-
match string in which Georgia will play five teams (the
Bulldogs play Tennessee twice) which are challenging them
for the SEC crown.
With Miller, Bezecny and Frey occupying the No.s 8, 4 and
spots, their play will be critical in the stretch run.
"The freshmen have done well all year," Magill said.
“They won some crucial matches for us in California (in the
national indoor championships where Georgia finished se
cond) and they’ve won some big ones for us in dual mat
ches.”

They say three times is a charm, and the Georgia baseball
team proved that saying true Tuesday as it defeated Clemson
8-5 for the third time this season. It was the Dogs' eighth
straight win and boosted their record to 17-13.
Georgia scored four runs in the top of the eighth to erase a
5-4 Clemson lead. The Dogs loaded the bases and scored their
first run of the inning when Rick Fuentes walked with the
bases loaded.
Mike Wirth, who was the Dogs' hitting star of the game
with three hits, drove in his third and fourth runs of the game
with a single. Buck Belue then singled to drive in Fuentes to
cap the four-run inning.
Belue went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and now has 16 hits in 26 at
bats during the Dogs' eight-game winning streak. Belue
leads the Dogs in hitting and Georgia Coach Steve Webber
said his presence in the lineup has made a big difference in
the team’s performance.
“His bat in our lineup has helped us tremendously,”
Webber said. “He has been driving in runs and has been a
complete offensive player. ”
The Dogs took a 3-0 lead after two-and-a-half innings on the
strength of Wlrth's two-run single in the third. Belue hit a
sacrifice fly in the first inning to score the Dogs' first run

Clemson came to tie the game in the third with a three-run
inning. Frank Russ hit the first of two homers on the day to
start the Tigers' scoring attack Two base hits accounted for
the other Clemson runs The Tigers added single runs in the
fourth and sixth to take a 5-3 lead The Dogs made it 5-4 in the
seventh on a Jeff Treadway single.
Guy Stargell pitched seven strong innings to earn the win
He Is 3-0 on the season Stargell was relieved by Hugh Kemp
in the eighth, who earned the save. It was one of Stargell's
best outings of the season and Webber was pleased with his
performance
“Stargell held on and did a good job after a rocky start,”
Webber said. “He had thrown 120 pitches so we wanted to get
Hugh in the game to start fresh "
The loss went to Clemson reliever Lee Wiles, who falls to 3-
1 on the season Clemson's record fell to 27-11.
The Dogs will have a chance to settle another score today
with V aldosta State. The Blazers nipped Georgia ealier in the
season 13-12, but that was before Valdosta native Belue was
in the lineup
Valdosta State got off to a shaky start, but it put together
eight straight wins before a split with top-ranked Division II
West Georgia Saturday The Blazers are now 28-15
Freshman left fielder Rob Busch leads the team with a 406
batting average. Second baseman Mark Murad is second-
batting 386.
While Georgia has beaten Clemson three times this year
Valdosta State dropped four straight to the Tigers
It may be a homecoming of sorts for Belue. He played high
school ball with four members of the VSC squad
