Rain forced the University Union’s Phil and the Rlanks/Little
Tigers concert into Memorial llall ballroom Saturday, but
the capacity crowd would not let their spirits be dampened.
The Little Tigers opened the show with an explosive per
formance of reggae and rock ’n* roll. The crowd responded to
their reggae sound by dancing in any available space. After a
two-hour set, the Little Tigers relinquished the stage to the
Blanks, who provided some energy of their own. After a slow
start because of sound problems, the dance floor was filled
once again. Reggae fans will have another chance to get the
beat when the Jamaican musicians Mighty Invaders play
Legion Field, May 19. Now, if only someone would arrange an
exorcism for the Rain C’urse. Anybody know a funky priest?

While many University students may recall their high
school years as ones of proms and parking, rather than as a
period of serious study, there are some Georgia high-school
students who are spending their time doing serious research
About 700 of these students were in Athens for the 34th an
nual Georgia Science and Engineering Fair held April 15-17
in the Coliseum.
Thie year’s fair offered visitors exhibits ranging from the
"Effects of Alcohol upon the Motor Ability of Mice," to the
"Evolution of Life and Landforms."
To submit an exhibit to the fair, students had to have finish
ed first or second in their high school fairs and first or second
in one of the 10 district fairs, said Gene Michaels, an
associate professor of microbiology at the University and the
director of the fair.
The exhibits were judged by industrial giants such as the
Georgia Power Company, Western Electric and by pro
fessors from colleges in the University System The judges
awarded top honors to Mirta Adams of Douglasville in the
physical sciences division and Andy Shapira of Atlanta in the
life sciences division.
Adams, a junior at Lithia Springs High School, won for her
project on “Evolution of Life and Landforms" in which she
studied geological deposits in northwest Georgia and
discovered a new type of pollen She has been researching
this project since the eighth grade
Shapira, a sophomore at Briarcliff High School, also won
the grand prize last year, making him the youngest winner
ever His project this year, “Packaging and Activation of En
zymes in Granules from Normal and Cancerous Cells," deals
with the identification of certain kinds of cancer, particularly
leukemia.
The two winners will receive a trip to Houston, Texas, May
9-15 for the International Science and Engineering Fair.
The local fair offers students a chance to see the University
campus and to participate in several activities including
tours of various science departments and a problem bowl, a
quiz game in which students are given a problem to solve
which requires the use of the library or any department on
campus, Michaels said.
Each year, students come up with some very interesting
projects. Michaels cited one example of a young man who
brought in five pounds of gunpowder to prove that he had ac
tually made it.
“We had to get rid of it, fast,” Michaels said.
Michaels has been involved with the fair for several years.
"Back in the ’50s, it looked like a circus. We had mice drown
ing, and chickens flying around.”
The fair is sponsored by the University with the help of the
Junior Academy of Science, which serves as a guide for cam
pus tours.
Some of the students participating in the fair will probably
be freshmen at the University The fair gives these students a
chance to get to know the cmapus, Michaels said.
