Lady Dog netters meet Clemson—finally
By CHARLES ODUM
Kml and Blarlt Stall Vt rltrr
Since February they’ve waited Through snow and rain
their anticipation built as Mother Nature continued to delay
the contest that the Georgia women's tennis team wanted so
badly
Today, the Lady Bulldogs, confident and poised after
Tuesday afternoon's 8-1 defeat of Georgia Southern, will
finally get their chance against arch rival Clemson at the
Georgia tennis complex
The victory over the Lady Eagles of Georgia Southern
extended Georgia's winning streak to four matches, in
cluding a 6-3 win over I7th-ranked Florida State April 17 in
Tallahassee Also on the line this afternoon will be an 11-
match streak, that of Georgia's No 1 singles player, Lisa
Spain, who hasn't lost a match in singles action since March
14 against Texas Christian

After rain in the morning, and the chance of more rain in
the afternoon, the women were fortunate to be able to play
their match outside Tuesday Since the men’s team has
priority over the indoor courts, rain always makes the time,
as well as the place, of a Georgia women's match a question.
But the weather held, and the sun eventually broke through
the clouds to further illustrate the Lady Dogs' impressive
victory. Although their Division II visitors from Statesboro
were close only in No. 3 doubles, the Georgia women never let
up, obviously motivated by their upcoming Clemson match
Spain was the first of the six singles players to finish wiping
out Terri Bissinger 6-1, 8-0 in 40 minutes Spain set the pace

6-0 advantage heading into doubles play.
There was a slight change in the doubles lineup for Georgia
Shepherd, fighting off the flu, got a rest. Kaufman sub
stituted for Shepherd in the No. 1 doubles slot, and teamed
with Spain to edge the stubborn Georgia Southern team of
Bissinger and Colmer 6-4,6-4.
Higgins and Cohen continued their excellent play,
frustrating Kuhlke and Faughnan 6-3, 6-2. The majority of
attempts by the Georgia Southern duo to lob or volley were
met by crushing slams by Higgins or Cohen.
Georgia's defeat of the afternoon came in No. 3 doubles
Fisher and Sadri saw an early lead dissipate in a 4-6,7-6 (7-5),
6-1 loss The match was also the only one extended to three
sets.
Despite the one doubles loss, Coach Lee Myers was pleased
with the win, but, like the rest of the team, she was thinking
of today's match with Clemson.
‘ These wins (over Florida State, Valdosta State and
Georgia Southern) have given us a confidence we didn’t have
before, " Myers said "Especially after beating Florida State,
we began to realize that maybe we could beat teams like
Clemson.”
Myers is especially hopeful since Clemson beat Florida
State 5-4, while her team defeated the Lady Seminoles more
decisively, 6-3. She is expecting a similar score in the
Clemson match today.

Foster doubts Ward will transfer to Georgia
Clemson basketball Coach Bill Foster
said Tuesday in a phone interview that
he “doubts” freshman forward Joe
Ward will transfer to Georgia next
year.
Foster said Ward is definitely leaving
Clemson, but said, "he’s undecided as
to where he is going to go. There's real
ly no rush he's going to have to sit out
next year."
Under NCAA rules, a student must sit
out a year when he transfers to another
school.
Even though Ward will be ineligible
to play next year, he does have three
years of eligibility left.
Clemson is in its last week of classes
with exams the following week. Foster
said Ward will finish his work at Clem
son before he actively starts looking for
a new school.
Ward, of Griffin, was the 1981 high
school player of the year in Georgia.
Ward was tom between Georgia and
Clemson during his senior year of high
school before finally opting for the
Tigers.
"He felt his opportunities might be
better elsewhere,” Foster said. “He
was disappointed over his lack of play
ing time and he felt it hard to adjust to
college life as most freshmen do.”
