The Red and Black
Panes
Filmingbegins soon
on‘Tennessee Stud’
By NANCY SALIBA
Hrd and Black Contributing Writer
If you see camera crews
and sound trucks around
town in the next few weeks,
don't get your hopes up —
"Breaking Away” has not
been resurrected. But
budding thespians may still
get their chance before the
cameras when a new
production company from
Bogart begins filming its
first movie here May 12.
“The Tennessee Stud" is
about a down-and-out horse
trainer whose goal is to win
the most prestigious Ten
nessee Walking Horse show
in the world, according to
Fred Cole, executive
producer of Classic
Productions. Cole said that
open roles would be ad
vertised next week on
campus radio station WUOG
and in The Red and Black.
Investors from the Athens,
Atlanta and Monroe areas
will supply the $1.5 million
needed to complete the film.
Specific filming locations
have not yet been deter
mined, Cole said, but some
scenes will be shot in
downtown Athens and some
Athenians' homes will be
used in the movie.
Classic Productions has
also contacted several
sororities about filming in
their houses, but no par
ticular house has been
selected. Cole said the
company might also film in
some Athens bars.
Rex Smith of television's
“Chisolm" is slated for the
lead role of horse trainer Joe
Sharp Cole said that Sonny
Bono and Tom Sullivan had
tentatively agreed to appear
in the film, and that he hopes
to snag Audrey Landers of
"Dallas" or her sister Judy
Landers of "B J. and the
Bear" for the female lead.
The real star of the movie,
however, is a champion
Tennessee Walking Horse
named Added Attraction
Classic Productions bought
Added Attraction, who is
insured for more than
$200,000, from a farm in
Tennessee
Cole said the film should
be finished this summer
Although he had originally
planned an Athens premiere.
Cole is negotiating with 1082
World’s Fair officials to
premiere the film at the fair
in Knoxville, Tenn.
“The Tennessee Stud” is
the result of University
graduate student Jane
Perry's idea to adopt the
original story, written by
Bill Norton, into a screen
play. At Norton's urging,
Cole formed Classic
Productions and began
planning "Tennessee Stud,"
"Nobody else would have
set up a full production of
fice” in Georgia, Cole said.
"Others, like Burt Reynolds,
have come from the West
Coast to film here, but we
are the first to produce in
Georgia.”
One reason Georgia is
becoming an increasingly
popular place for
moviemaking is because
filming here is economical,
Cole said. Expenses in
Georgia are lower than in
California, and equipment is
readily available Another
plus to filmmakers is that
Georgia does not require
film crews to be union
members
Classic plans to begin
work on its second film this
summer. “Corner Pocket” is
about a young man's fight to
rescue his sister from the
influence of pool-room drug
dealers.
