Legion fix-up OK’d
to make pool safer
By BETII LILLY
Krd and Black Stall Writer
The Board of Regents approved $60,000
Wednesday for repairs on Legion Pool,
rendering it safe for swimming this spring
quarter, according to Earl Cashon, assistant
director for Building Services.
Student Activities officials said, however,
they are confident the project will not
require the entire sum, and they will return
all remaining funds back to the University
System general revenue
The pool surface has been repaired three
times in the past three years, creating a
hazardous patchwork of tile of concrete,
Cashon said. The tiles have been loosening
and protruding from the surface and causing
skin abrasions to some swimmers.
Instead of making minor repairs for the
fourth straight year, Student Activities of
ficials requested funds from the Boand of
Regents to resurface the entire pool and
make other minor repairs Funds were
approved, and Cashon said Physical Plant
engineers are currently evaluating exactly
what the repair job will entail The Physical
Plant will soon accept bids and award the job
to a private construction company in the next
few weeks.
The defective tile surface will be replaced
with gunnite, a spray-on concrete held
together by fiberglass In addition to
resurfacing, the project will include the
repair of pool leaks and replacement of
damaged pool lights
The entire renovation project is expected
to be completed before April 1 when the pool
is scheduled to open, Cashon said.
This may not be exactly what the inventors had in mind when they created wash and wear
fabrics, but that doesn't seem to bother Osborne Lockhart of the Harlem Globetrotters.
Lockhart and the Trotters were in town Wednesday night to entertain a crowd of over 9,000 in
the Coliseum. The Interfraternity Council and the Athens Jaycees sponsored the hilarious
Clown Princes of Basketball, and all proceeds from the game will goto the Kelly Workshop, a
program which teaches job skills to handicapped people.
