Dan Magill knew after his Georgia Bulldogs won the
Southeastern Conference Indoor Championship in January
that the outdoor competition would be a wide-open battle
between the top five teams He could not have predicted,
however, that his Dogs would roll over and die when tour
nament time came
Although we won the SEC Indoors Tournament," Magill
said. "I said then that the outdoor tournament would be
between five teams - Georgia. Tennessee, Auburn,
Alabama and Louisiana State The winner would be the team
who was hot at tournament time "
But ihe Bulldogs hit a cold spot at the wrong time Georgia
did not have an individual SEC champion for the first time
since 1976
Wo were just snakebit down the stretch," Magill said
Malmqvist resprained his ankle Saturday morning and
Miller had the flu the first part of the week However, both
made great efforts in their singles and doubles matches
Auburn won its first SEC tennis championship, finishing on
lop of the 10-team field with 25 points, four ahead of Alabama
Tennessee. 16. placed third and Georgia. 13, fourth, with
I-SC. Kentucky, Mississippi State. Ole Miss, Florida and
Vanderbilt rounding out the field
Auburn coach Hugh Thomson, the 1983 SEC Coach of the
Year, praised his squad for its season long improvement
"At least we won it (the SEC tournament) the hard way,"
Thomson said "We got a lot more points in doubles than in
singles We played a long season and we had a lot of freshmen
w ho started slowly It took them a while to learn how to play
in Ihe conference But, we got better as the season went on
because we weren't mentally tough at the beginning of the
season"
Upsets were tile norm at the tournament, as only one top-
seeded team, Jack Burleigh and Ted Viator of LSU at No 3
doubles, made the finals of their division
The No I singles bracket looked like a battle between Allen
Miller of Georgia and Paul Annacone of Tennessee, both
ranked in the top 20 nationally But both were upset in the
first round, as Howard Herr of Auburn beat Annacone 6-4, 6-3
and Steffan Olsson of Alabama beat Miller 4-6, 6-3 7-6 The
upsets cleared the way for Fernando Perez of LSU to capture
the No 1 singles crown, beating Joe Leytze of Kentucky 6-2
6-3 in the finals
Joe Heldmann, top seed at No 2 singles, lost to eventual
champion Kevin Moir from Auburn 6-3,6-2, while Tom Foster
was eliminated in the qualifying round by Bo Johnson of
Florida 6-2.1-6,7-5
Deane Frey defeated Hans Carlson of Alabama in the No 4
singles semifinals, but then lost to Tennessee's Earl
Grainger 6-7,6-1,6-4 in the championship
"Grainger played just a little better that day. '' Magill said
"They split in dual matches over the past two seasons and he
beat Frey at the SECs in No. 5 singles last year ”
The Bulldogs' only other finalist, No 5 Ola Malmqvist lost
to Gregg Hahn of Alabama 6-4. 6-2 Jeff Wallace lost to Eric
Voges of Tennessee at No 6 singles in the semifinals
