Representatives for student groups endorsing and op
positmg a student government will face each other i n a
debate tonight at 7 p m in Demostheman Hall.
° The debate is sponsored by the Demostheman Literary
Society and is open to the public. Demostheman President
The meeting will begin with the two groups — Students for
Student Representation and Students Against
Misrepresentation - presenting their respective points o|
view and will end with a question and answer session
Ellington said
SSR Vice President Sam Harben said the group had not
been officially notified by the Demosthenians but added he
had heard about the debate and that he would be ready to
represent the group
Harben said his purpose going into any debate concerning
the student government was to prove that The Association of
Georgia Students could be an effective tool for students
"Everybody in this country will have to agree that-a
democratic elected government - on any level - is a good
thing This goes for our campus, too, " he said.
Harben said he had the impression the University ad
ministration was in favor of TAGS and that the ad
ministration would consider delegating some responsibility
to the government if it were instituted
"Definitely, student government will have some input to
the decision process In my discussion with the ad
ministration, it has become clear they are concerned with
what the students need and want,” Harben said
SAM leader Dan Mitchell will represent the group in the
debate and said he would try to prove there was no need for a
student government
"People say, We don't have a student government, gee. we
need one ' We actually don't." Mitchell said.
A student government would have no influence what
soever, he said, and would therefore be an unnecessary
expense
"The people in favor of TAGS are speaking for their own
interests That'swhy wehave to fight It." Mitchellsaid
