This IS it This is the time that the injury-riddled men's
track team has been waiting (or — the Southeastern Con
ference championships
Coach Lewis Gainey's squad has had injury after injury
this season, and lias held many performances out of com
petition so they would be healthy for this weekend Among
the injured who will compete ifor some, for the first time in
more than a month i are captain Billy Kichard, and All-
America Clarence Christian
"We re going to run our athletes just enough to keep them
sharp for the SECs," said Gainey before the Spec Towns
Invitational last weekend He was referring to some of the
minor injuries sustained by some of his athletes during a
year Gainey said has been the worst, in that respect
Instrumental in the Bulldogs' finish this weekend could be
several freshmen Sprinter Stanley Blalock and field jumper
U-ster Benjamin have proven consistent
Skipper Wilbanks, one of the (Jogs' best bets to win, has a
leap of 7-feet 3-inches in the high jump, best this year in the
conference
Killy Kichard will again battle in the hurdles competition at the SECs
The middle and long distance runners have also performed
very well, and look to be a big part of the Bulldogs' success in
the meet
Georgia, which relies heavily upon its sprinters, needs to
have the sprinters come through if it hopes to have any
chance at the title — expected to go to either Alabama or
Tennessee Alabama has one of its best teams in years, ac
cording toGainey, and Tennessee is perennial track power in
the SEC, taking 17 of the past 19 titles
The Bulldogs appear to have a disproportionate amount of
sprinters in relation to the other teams in the conference,
and are said to be one of the top schools (in sprintingi in the
.Southeast
The women's team will also be going to the Southeastern
Conference championship The Bulldog Babes, coming off a
strong performance in the Spec Towns Invitation, send a
team that picked up seven first places and set three records
in last week's meet
Whittington to face Indy decision
INDIANAPOLIS I API — Don Whittington has a decision to
make before Saturday’s start of qualifications for the In
dianapolis 500 Does he continue to practice "super-fast for
the pole, or get the car set up for the race - ’"
"I haven't made that decision yet," said Whittington, sixth-
place finisher last year and the fastest driver in practice for
the May 29 race
There's a different strategy and race-car setup (or
relatively short distance speed, the goal for Saturday's
scramble for starting positions in the race When the 500-mile
grind begins, of course, the objective is endurance A car
can't win if it doesn't finish, no matter how fast it goes
"It's easy to get lost here," Whittington said of the
meticulous preparations leading to qualifications "If you do
something wrong, you fall back You have to be able to repeat
what you've done right and correct what you’ve done
wrong "
Whittington. 37, the eldest of three brothers who drove in
the 1982 rare, qualified at a (our lap average of 21X1725 mph
last year
Starting Thursday's practice, he was up to 205 19* mph Se
cond fastest in practice was last year's pole-position starter
and second-place finisher Kick Mears, the 1979 winner
Wears top lap through five days of practice has been 20-M9H
mph
Mears set a track record in qualifications last year with a
four lap average of 207 (KM He also had a record one-lap
speed of 207 612 and an unofficial record of more than 208 in
practice
Eleven drivers had topped 200 mph by the start of Thurs
day's practice, and one reason for the torrid pace — despite
technical rules changes designed to slow the race cars - is
the tires. Whittington said.
"The tires are much better, much more consistent They 're
getting better wear, they're living longer They're great," he
said
Practice ends Eri.lay night, and the blind draw for the
order of Saturday's qualifications will be held after that at a
drivers' meeting A final practice session is scheduled early
Saturday, followed by the time trials
Whittington estimated it would take a four-lap average of
206 2 to win the pole, 198 4 to make the 33-car starting field
and a single fastest lap of 207 25 mph

Weekend decides
what school wins
all-sports trophy
By TODD HOLCOMB
Red and (liark UinUnl hpertt Miter
For the vaunted Georgia athletic program, which boasts
three consecutive Southeastern Conference football titles,
along with two straight top-four finishes nationally in men's
tennis, one honor has always managed to slip away — The
Bernie Moore Trophy
The trophy, which began in 1974, recognizes the premier
overall men's sports program in the SEC The recipient is the
school which earns the most points on a one to 10 scale award
ed In each sport A conference champion receives 10 points,
the second-place team nine, the third-place finishers eight
and so on
Auburn leads the chase for the Bernie Moore with 30 5
points, primarily on the auspices of its first SEC tennis title
last weekend in Athens Tennessee, which has won the trophy
four of the nine years it's been awarded, is second with 28
points Georgia is third with 27 5. Louisiana State and
Alabama have 25.5 points each
Three SEC champions are yet to be crowned, how ever The
SEC tournaments for baseball, golf and outdoor track are
held this weekend
Despite Auburn's lead, by virtue of its miserable 4-14 con
ference baseball record, the Tigers will not retain their slim
lead, and have little chance of claiming the trophy LSU. only
four points behind Auburn, also has been virtually eliminated
due to its poor showing so far in the final three sports
The quest for the Bernie Moore Trophy, therefore, is shap
ing up as a three-horse race between Alabama. Georgia and
Tennessee
Four teams are still vying for the top four spots in the
baseball standings Mississippi State, eighth in the country,
is favored to oust Tennessee. Florida and Alabama in this
weekend's SEC baseball finals
Georgia, finished its season last week, will receive either
five or six points in baseball, losing at least a point to the
Volunteers or Crimson Tide, pending the outcome of the
weekend tournament
The Bulldogs' hopes ride on their fortunes in the SEC golf
tournament beginning Friday in Augusta. Ga The Dogs are
the top-rated team in the South and favorites in the SEC
Alabama and Tennesee. evidenced by their performances
earlier this year, are likely to finish in the top four, with
Alabama considered the biggest threat to upset Georgia
In track, Tennessee, winners of 17 of the past 19 SEC cham
pionships. is a prohibitive favorite Alabama Is the next
highest rated team In the conference Georgia has finished
third in track the past two years, and is considered among
the top four this year
Four sports — basketball, football, sw imming and lenms —
have concluded their SEC schedules Georgia tallied the
maximum 10 points as result of its football prowess The
Bulldogs stronghold, however, tennis, let them down Though
the Bulldogs had won 10 of the past 12 conference tennis titles
and were slight favorites this year. The Dogs could do no bet
ter than fourth
Georgia was also credited with a fourth-place finish in
basketball The points were awarded on the basis of the
team's finish in the round robin schedule, not its successes in
post season play, during which Georgia won the SEC tourna
ment and reached the Final Four
For the past three years. Tennessee has won the Bernie
Moore Trophy Georgia finished third last year with 53 5
points Alabama and Tennessee tied for first with 55 In 1981,
Georgia lied for second with Alabama The Bulldogs have
never won the trophy since its incepetion in 1974
The trophy is named in honor of SEC commissioner from
1948 to 1966
