The Krd and Black
' Trifling' captures pain of love
Herd lean and Camille embrace
By MIKE TIDWELL

During his time. French
romantic playwright
Alfred De Musset was as
famous for his frivolous,
tempestuous private life as
for his skill at bringing
these characteristics to ar
tistic fruition on stage
Romping through the
streets of Paris and the
pastoral French coun
tryside, De Musset was
rarely without a good bottle
and a flirtatious young
woman Then, as is com
mon of love's sweet toxin.
De Musset tripped over a
deep, devastating affair
and was left lamenting the
pitfalls of romance
"No Trifling With Love,"
written in 1834, is a com
mentary on the dark depths
and lofty heights of love
While utilizing a unique
stage set, competent acting
and extremely fluid direr
tion, the University Drama
department crystallizes
much of De Musset's comic
wit and bitter am
bivalence
The play concerns the
complications of an ar
ranged marriage between
the young lovers Perdican
and Camille, and the rever
sals they encounter when
the dark side of passion
raises its head De
Musset's play offers sting
ing insight into the un
predictability of love and
the unspeakable pain it
often breeds
Without doubt. "No Trifl
ing's" strongest feature
lies in its direction August
Staub creates a vortex of
motion w ith his characters,
lacing dialogue with
creative mannerisms and
carefully engaging most of
the cast in almost every
scene in the play.
Although the production
of "No Trifling" works well
as a whole, there are a few
outstanding individual per
forma nees
Uiuis DeVincenti's role
as Perdican is quite amus
ing and believable
DeVincenti's lean build and
boyish face, combined with
his ability to vacillate from
a clumsy buffoon to a
serious romantic, does well
to capture the mold of a
confused young lover
Another noteworthy
aspect of the production is
the set design of Joseph
Stell. Stell establishes a
close audience / performer
relationships by converting
the proscenium of the Fine
Arts Theater into a multi
sided trust stage At least
too members of the au
dience are seated on the
stage behind the per
formance and the relative
ly simple, uncluttered
design allows the actors the
freedom to reach directly
to the viewers.
Taken as a whole, the
University drama depart
ment's production of "No
Trifling with Love” is
worth seeing The expan
sive stage design, the
direction and adequate ac
ting do justice to De
Musset's work. The final
effect embraces the
strange malady of love and
its attending foolishness
and pain
In one of the final acts of
the play, Camille tells Per
dican, "l want to love, but
not to suffer " But, as De
Musset knew all too well,
all lovers must do both

Local bands play \
politics at Fairground
Dreamland chills out with Jah
By BOB KEYES

Following a week of
politically oriented
workshops and speeches
throughout town, the
Athens Human Rights
Festival moves to the
Athens Fairgrounds off
Highway 78 for a weekend
of music and more
speakers.
About 15 local bands and
Nashville-based Afrikan
Dreamland will perform at
the Fairground stage all
day Saturday and Sunday
Festival organizer
Michael Collins said the
music played an equally
important role in the week
long event because it would
bring people together and,
in some cases, provide
additional political views.
"Politics, music and art
— that's what this festival
is all about," said Randy
Tatel, an organizer and
Progressive Resource
Center volunteer
Josh Olsen will open the
weekend music Saturday
at noon, and the Little
Tigers will follow
Dreamland Sunday night
at 9:30 to close the festival.
BANG!, fronted by
songwriter Norbert Miller,
has attracted a consistent
following since its in
ception last fall with
Miller's songs of political
corruption, like "Product
of the 1980s " The band will
close Saturday's music at
lop.m
Afrikan Dreamland will
make its second Human
Rights Festival ap
pearance in a row with its
hour and a half set Sunday
at 8 p m. (Dreamland will
also perform at the i and i
club tonight i Like BANG!,
this reggae band sings of
nuclear weapons and the
quest for worldwide peace.
Juan Molina, drummer
for Little Tigers. BANG!
and the Raisin Touchers,
believes the music,
whether it's political or not,
will contribute to the
overall positive at
mosphere presented by the
festival,
“I think the music will do
a bigger part to draw
people out there, because
it's entertainment .... You
can't really cull a speaker
entertainment,” he said
Many genres of music
will be represented by the
various bands — the
