SMU to lead NCAA tennis field
By BART MOORE
Krd and Black Slalf Writer
Top seeded Southern
Methodist looks to win its
first NCAA team tennis
championship, as the 99th
NCAA Tennis Cham
pionships begin Saturday,
May 14, at 8 a m. at Henry
Feild Stadium. The team
championships last through
May 17. while the singles and
doubles competition con
cludes Sunday. May 22.
Although Georgia is not
one of the 16 teams in this
year's field, the Dogs are
well-represented in the
singles and doubles com
petition Allen Miller and Joe
Heldmann vie for the singles
title, while Miller teams with
Ola Malmqvist, and Held
mann with Tom Foster, for
the doubles crown
The Mustangs of SMU, the
first non-Californian team to
be seeded first since the
dual-match format was
instituted in 1977, are led by
Rodney Harmon, a 6-3 175-
pound senior from Rich
mond, Va Harmon, who won
the doubles title with Mel
Purcell while attending
Tennessee three years ago.
was the No. 1 seed in the
singles event last year and
achieved All-America
status.
Sophomore Erie Korita
plays No. 2 for the Mustangs
while Jerome Vanier, a 1982
All-American, plays No 3.
John Ross, a freshman from
Gainesville. Fla , Erik Van't
Hof and Mark Styslinger
round out the SMU lineup
Coach Dennis Ralston's
Mustangs recently won the
Southwest Conference
championship for the second
year in a row
Dick Gould's Stanford
Cardinal is the second seed
in this year's championship
Stanford is led by Scott
Davis and national Junior
champion John Letts The
Cardinal, after winning the
title in 1980 and 1981, did not
receive an invitation to last
year's championships and
could be hungrier than ever
in 1983
Among Stanford's victims
in 1983 are NCAA-entrants
Clemson, California-lrvine,
Utah. USC and UCLA
Stanford plays its first
match against Howard
Sands and the Harvard
squad Saturday at noon.
Third-seeded Southern
California has as much of a
chance to claim the title as
any team The Trojans
feature All-America Matt
Anger, along with Todd
Witsken, Jorge Lozano, Tim
Pawsay. Anthony Emerson
and Gary Lemon.
The Waves of Pepperdine
are the fourth seed in the
tournament, yet they
knocked off national powers
UCLA (twice), Miami,
Stanford, Texas. Arkansas,
Clemson. California-lrvine
and Trinity. Coach Allen
Fox's lineup reads like an
All-America list with such
names as Glenn Michibata.
John Van Nostrand, Richard
Gallien. Kelly Jones, Jerome
Jones and Ril Baxter filling
positions one through six.
The defending champion
UCLA Bruins can never be
counted out of the running
Danny Saltz, who ousted
Harmon in last year's
singles competition, leads a
squad which also features
1981 All-America John
Davis The Bruins have
knocked off Wichita State,
Trinity (twice), Arkansas.
Clemson, Utah, Harvard,
and California-Berkelev.
Rounding out the seeding
are Trinity (sixthi,
Arkansas <seventhi and
Clemson (eighth) None of
these teams can be ruled out
either Trinity is one of only
two teams to defeat SMU
this year. Tomm Warneke,
Charles Honey and company
are certainly capable of
claiming the title, as is
Arkansas, which is led by
Peter Doohan and Pat
Surret, last year's NCAA
doubles champions. The
Razorbacks were only four
points behind SMU in the
Southwest Conference
Championships
Coach Chuck Kriese's
Clemson Tigers could also
sneak into the title picture if
Ric Rudeen, Jean DesDunes
and Richard Akel all became
hot at the same time
Clearly, it will be a wide
open tournament in 1983.
Kodney Harmon will led the Mustangs at No. 1 singles
also be competing in the
field
"I think we can take the
SECs," said Georgia's
Beans Kelly "The team can
still pull together in time to
win and then come back
during our peak for
nationals.”
Coach Liz Murphy has also
expressed her desire to do
well in the SECs to help get
the team's confidence "back
in gear."
Martha Stacy will battle with the l.ady Dogs for the SEC title

The golfing battle between
Georgia and Florida is

Athens two weeks ago in the
Southeastern Intercollegiate

Prior to the SICs, Georgia

Florida, however, beat
Georgia and claimed the

Murphy would trade award for ring
ATLANTA IAP) Dale Murphy, the unassuming gentle
giant of the Atlanta Braves, is again terrorizing National
League pitchers after earning the Most Valuable Player
award last season But he says he'd trade last year’s honor
for a World Series ring
Murphy, who turned 27 in March, leads the league with
nine home runs and 29 runs batted in He ranks third in runs
scored with 25, and was batting ,327 before Thursday's game
at Houston
"Last year was great, but I'd trade my personal award for
a World Series ring," Murphy said “That's all I and the rest
of the team are thinking about.
"I just go out every day trying to hit the ball, get hits and
hopefully cut down on my strikeouts,"
To Manager Joe Torre, however, Murphy can do very little
wrong, and if the Portland, Ore , native wouldn't talk about
his exploits, Torre had no qualms
"He's something He's the complete player Few come to
mind I’m not familiar with the American League, but in our
league there are only two players, Dale Murphy and Andre
Dawson of the Expos, who can do it all," Torre said
