Paid lots to help solve parking problems
R\ GHRG KHKKMAV ^
By (iHECi FREEMAN
RH ana Mark MaM WrMrr
Beginning winter quarter,
students will not only have to
be lucky enough to find a
parking space at the
bookstore, they II also have
to pay for it
The bnokstorr parking lot.
along with the Stegeman
Hall parking lot and the lot
directly across from the
Coliseum, will soon be
converted to paid lots with
an hourly fee, according to
Joe Hroadhurst. director ol
auxiliary services
The plan to convert these
lots is part of an overall plan
to improve parking con
ditions on campus.
Hroadhurst said the plans
came about after a nine-
month study conducted by
Harland. Bartholomew and
Associates, Inc of Memphis.
STARTS FRIDAY
in BEECHWOOD DOLBY STEREO
Rebel
Tenn The final report from
the firm recommended
adding 4.500 more parking
spaces by 1993 and creating
paid lots in certain premium
areas around campus
"They found that the
University had the greatest
utilization of parking of any
campus in the southeast, and
they've studied a great
many. Hroadhurst said
"Basically, they suggested
creating premium areas
The overall plan of ex
pansion presented by the
consultants was a 10-year
plan
He added that the
University was now working
on the first half of the plan
which includes the paid lots
and the proposed parking
deck behind Myers Hall
Dave I .unde, associate
director of Campus Plan
ning, said the conversions
were part of the new
(larking lot assignment and
parking lot fee plan” and
added he agreed with
Hroadhurst that the paid lots
and the Myers Parking deck
would greatly improve the
parking situation on cam
pus
Broadhurst said the lot
behind the Georgia Center
for Continuing Education
across from the Coliseum
would remain a paid lot only
until the proposed parking
deck behind Myers Hall is
constructed After the deck
is completed, the lot would
be changed to a resident
student parking lot to ac
comodate the Myers Hall
residents displaced by the
parking deck
The lot would remain a
paid lot during construction
ol the deck, however, and
Rroadhurst said no plans
had been devised for the
residents of Myers Hall to
park during construction
Hroadhurst stressed that
the conversion of the lots
would provide no in
convenience to students but
is intended to make more
spares available to students,
as well as others visiting
these campus areas The
three specified lots are now
faculty and conference lots,
in which students are not
allowed to park
"The main point is to
make central locations more
accessible to everyone."
Hroadhurst said He added
that the lots would not only
be accessible to students
and faculty, but also to short
term campus visitors
The hourly fee for the
parking lots has not been
determined yet. Hroadhurst
said, but we will try to keep
it as low as possible "
The lots will be in
operation from 7:30a m to 5
p m . except for the lot
behind the Georgia Center,
which will operate until 10
p m After closing, the lots
will be available for free
parking and accessible to
everyone
Broadhurst said all
operational costs of the lots
would be paid for by the
funds collected at the gate
He added that ap
proximately 100 spaces in
the bookstore lot would be
set aside for a keycard area
reserved for faculty and
staff
The three lots will be
converted throughout the
academic year The
bookstore lot would likely be
the first to be converted.
Broadhurst said, with
construction beginning
during Christmas break
The lot behind the Georgia
Center and across from the
Coliseum would be next,
with construction beginning
during winter quarter
Construction would begin
near the end of the year on
the Stegeman Hall parking
lot, which would also be
repaved
Broadhurst said the
University had not yet
contracted with a firm for
the construction and he
declined to give an estimate
of the cost The main costs,
he added, would be the in
stallations of booths and
gates
One full time employee
would be hired for the
bookstore lot and another for
the Stegeman Hall lot.
Broadhurst said A full- time
employee and a part-time
emolovee would be hired for
the Georgia Center lot

CAN YOU BUY GOOD TASTE?
Yes! Now you can acquire good taste for a
couple of bucks. Just wear shirts and visors
that say “Dos Equis." After all, those
are foreign words. And anyone in college
knows people who wear stuff with foreign
words and alligators have good taste.
So, order your kind of good taste in Dos
Equis sportswear today. And remember to
eat your peanut butter and jelly sand
wiches over the sink.

The removal project
began June 12. and was
scheduled to be completed
by Sept 2. However. Univer
sity Housing Director Dan
Hallenbeck said the project
was actually completed a
w eek ahead of schedule
“They were right on
schedule,” Hallenbeck said
"Were happy and they're
happy."
Daryl Rowe, bio-safety
officer and manager of the
University's environmental
safety service at Public
Safety, was in charge of
inspecting the dorms twice a
day to ensure that ail the
asbestos fibers had been
removed
Rowe said those in
spections went well, but the
University is still awaiting
the final report from the
Department of Human
Resources in Atlanta, which
also conducted inspections
Hallenbeck praised the
efforts of the University -
Physical Plant division for
its work in the asbestos-
removal project
"The folks in Physical
Plant worked with our stafl
and did a tremendous job in
ensuring success of the
removal of the asbestos." he
said
The removal project
which required wetting and
scraping the material from
the ceiling, will leave the
concrete ceiling bare
Hallenbeck said earlier Ibis
summer a decision would be
made at a later dale when
the dorm ceilings would be
primed and painted
But for the meantime
University students can
breathe more easily

who organized SAFE
